To reach the Upper Xuan Sect, one must climb the mountain; there is no other way. This was what Mingyue told me during my first visit.
At that time, my senior brother took us down the mountain to ride the cable car. Since then, just a few short months had passed, but everything had changed beyond recognition.
Mu Xuanche had good stamina, and I had built up some endurance by following him. We decided to work together and climb up in one go.
The last time I came to the Xuan Sect with Mingyue, we climbed for an entire day before finally reaching the top, nearly exhausted.
I never expected that this time we would reach the summit after just a few hours of climbing.
The great door of the Xuan Sect stood tightly closed, and the incense offerings in front were no longer as vibrant as before. It made my heart ache a little.
With Master gone and my senior brother absent, the Xuan Sect without its leader felt like a dragon struggling to survive without its limbs.
I stepped forward and knocked on the door, waiting a long time before someone finally came to open it for us.
There were too many disciples of the Xuan Sect for me to recognize them all, so I couldn't identify the Taoist standing before me.
The Taoist didn't fully open the door; he merely cracked it slightly and stared at me.
He scrutinized me for a long while before suddenly slapping his forehead and swinging the door wide open, exclaiming, "You are Gu Fourth Uncle, right?"
Gu Si—this was the name Master had given me. It had been so long since I had heard anyone call me that.
The sudden recognition from the Taoist almost brought tears to my eyes.
I lowered my head and followed in his footsteps as we entered, with Mu Xuanche trailing behind me.
Since I had returned, all the Senior Brothers of Xuanzong had gathered in the main hall.
My master was absent, my senior brother was not present, and Mingyue had not shown up either.
Now, I was the highest-ranking member of Xuanzong, and although there was no one in charge, those who remained were all loyal Disciples of Xuanzong, treating me with great respect.
"Welcome back, Shishu."
I stood in the position my master had originally assigned to me, a place specifically reserved for his closed-door disciples.
There were only about twenty people scattered below, a stark contrast to the bustling crowd of over a hundred I had seen when I first arrived at Xuanzong.
I looked at the only familiar face among them, my senior brother, and asked him what was going on and why there were so few people.
He looked at me helplessly. "Gu Fourth Uncle, ever since rumors spread outside about a Cult Party specifically targeting Disciples of Xuanzong to skin them alive, everyone has been on edge. With Master and the eldest senior brother missing, people are even more frightened. To save their own lives, some have chosen to leave. The ones who remain are either orphans or those who have a deep attachment to Xuanzong and can't bear to leave."
Seeing the dejected expressions of those in front of me made me feel a sense of melancholy for Xuanzong.
I turned back to glance at Mu Xuanche; he nodded in agreement with my decision.
With his support, I addressed the disciples of Xuanzong.
"Everyone, stay safe. With Master absent from Xuanzong, we must unite to protect it and wait for his return. My main purpose for coming back today is to uncover the truth about the Cult Party's actions against Disciples of Xuanzong and ensure everyone's safety. Although I, Gu Si, may not possess great abilities, I am willing to risk my life for Xuanzong. This time, I have also brought my husband back to assist me."
I shouted enthusiastically in front, but the disciples below hung their heads, looking somewhat sickly. I knew that the recent incident had hit them hard.
Now, with the Xuanzong leaderless, the only way to restore it would be for Master to return personally. All I could do during this time was manage Xuanzong and ensure that no further incidents occurred among the remaining disciples.
Seeing that everyone was disinterested, I didn’t push them and allowed them to go back and rest, planning to discuss matters again tomorrow.
After everyone dispersed, I followed Mu Xuanche back to the place where we used to stay.
As soon as the door opened, a cloud of dust rushed at us; it seemed like it hadn’t been cleaned in quite a while.
When Master was around, he would always arrange for the disciples to clean up. But now that he was gone, the warmth of human relationships had faded.
“Mu Xuanche, do you think something has happened to your Master?”
I originally thought that Master would be fine because he was so powerful. However, with such a major incident occurring in Xuanzong and him not showing up, I couldn’t help but worry. Could something really have happened to him?
“Don’t worry. Your Master is an old fox who has lived for a thousand years; he won’t come to harm. Over a decade ago, I visited Xuanzong once and ended up being tricked by your Master. If he could fool me, do you really think this old fox would get into trouble?”
“But why hasn’t he shown up after such a big incident?”
This was what I found most difficult to understand. Master had always been protective; he wouldn’t just ignore the troubles facing Xuanzong’s disciples.
“There’s only one possibility: Lingyunzi is currently trapped somewhere and doesn’t know what’s happening in the outside world. Even if he can foresee it, he might be powerless to act.”
Mu Xuanche’s response eased my worries slightly. As long as Master was still in Xuanzong, there was hope for its revival.
"By the way, what did you mean when you said you were tricked by your master once?"
He glanced at me with amusement and replied, "Do you know why I’ve never gotten along with Chuchen?"
I shook my head; I had no idea about his issues with the Second Senior Brother since I wasn't involved.
Surprisingly, in a good mood today, he decided to share.
More than a decade ago, Mu Xuanche had once gone to Xuanzong seeking revenge on Lingyunzi but fell into a trap set by Lingyunzi.
The trap almost led Mu Xuanche to take advantage of Chuchen. He didn’t tell me the details, but it was clear that he was deceived by Lingyunzi's illusion and nearly ended up with Chuchen, who was far too enchanting and suited to disguise as a girl.
From that incident, a grudge formed between Chuchen and Mu Xuanche.
Because of this, whenever Chuchen saw Mu Xuanche, he would chase him down.
After hearing this, I collapsed onto the bed, laughing so hard I thought I might burst. I just couldn't stop.
"Hahaha, Mu Xuanche, you actually had a moment like that!"
I pointed at him, one hand clutching my stomach as I laughed uncontrollably on the bed.
He sat at the edge of the bed with an awkward expression, watching me, a hint of a smile appearing at the corners of his eyes.
I understood what he meant. I had been too melancholic earlier, so he made a fool of himself to cheer me up.
It was hard to believe that he, who was originally an ice mountain, would now resort to embarrassing antics just to make me smile.
I stopped laughing, stood up, and reached out my hand toward him.
He slowly leaned in, and my mood lifted. I wrapped my arms around his neck.
“Come on, pick me up and let me ride like a horse,” I joked.
To my surprise, he took it seriously.
He lifted me off the ground with both hands and whispered softly in my ear, “So, where do you want to go?”
I felt my smile stretching from ear to ear; I was filled with a sweetness that made my heart feel completely full.
Holding onto his neck, I nuzzled closer, burying my head against his shoulder to feel his warmth and heartbeat.
“Mu Xuanche, promise you won’t leave me for a lifetime, okay?”
I spoke softly. People can be so ungrateful; he was being so good to me now, yet I couldn’t shake the feeling that I might lose him.
I didn’t know why; it was just a strange illusion that made me think this calmness was merely the prelude to an approaching storm.
“Okay,” he replied.
He was quietly there, and it made me feel an overwhelming sense of peace, calming my restless heart in an instant.
My lips brushed against his neck; it was my first time taking the initiative, and I wanted to try it once.
"Yan Xi, stop it," he said, holding his breath, his voice sounding somewhat strained.
But I felt quite pleased; teasing him was incredibly satisfying.
If kissing wasn't enough, I swept my tongue across his neck repeatedly.
Suddenly, he pushed me away.
I shrank back in fear, looking at him. His gaze was filled with intensity.
"You brought this on yourself, Gu Yanxi," he said through gritted teeth. I smiled lightly; even if a storm were to come, I wouldn't be afraid.
Before I could gather my thoughts, I found myself pinned down on the bed.
He leaned closer, and I felt his weight pressing down on me.
His breath brushed against my face, hot and tingling.
"I'm sure," he asked me again.
I playfully replied, "I want to."
Those two words instantly shattered him, and he lunged at me like a beast ready to tear me apart.
My clothes, under his fury, turned to mere fragments.
Yet, his movements towards me were incredibly gentle, captivating me and drawing me into a trance.
