I let out a cold laugh, feeling the chill seep into my bones.
"Hmph, what’s there to know? It only concerns my parents."
"Indeed, Gu Yanxi, very impressive," he replied, his voice colder than mine, causing the temperature around us to drop even further.
Yet I felt no fear; once a person has a goal, they no longer dread danger.
"Island Master, please tell me about my parents."
He spoke coldly, extinguishing the cigarette butt in his hand. "They are with the Cult of Spirits; for now, they are not in any life-threatening danger."
"Thank you."
Having received the information I sought, it was only natural for me to leave after expressing my gratitude.
As I turned to go, I stumbled and fell into his embrace.
I reached out to slap his face but ended up hitting him harder than he had struck me.
"Cat, don’t get all riled up," he said with a chuckle.
Struggling, I exclaimed, "Let go of me!"
He laughed lightly and released me, causing me to fall to the ground.
"What do you want from me?"
Without any warning, those words left my mouth, and my throat felt as if it were blocked, rendering me speechless. Tears began to flow uncontrollably, and I simply sat down on the ground and cried.
I felt someone gently patting my back from behind, as if offering comfort, a rhythmic motion that soothed me.
This kind of concern made me cry even louder, releasing emotions I had suppressed for far too long.
Everything had been going wrong; too many grievances had built up inside me. I kept telling myself to endure and not to let it out.
But in front of him, it all erupted unexpectedly, something I hadn’t anticipated at all.
I lost track of time while crying, and eventually, the hand that had been patting my back stopped.
“Are you done crying?”
His voice was so cold, like the Dark Shore, devoid of any warmth or empathy.
Yet somehow, I found myself listening, managing to stifle my sobs.
Even though I knew the dim light wouldn’t expose my face, I still didn’t dare to lift my head, burying it between my knees.
I choked out a response, “I’m done crying. Thank you.”
“Can you get up at five in the morning?”
“Huh? What?”
“I’m asking if you can get up.”
I wasn’t sure what he was getting at. After crying for so long, my head felt a bit foggy. I replied brightly, “Yeah, I can get up.”
"Alright, wait for me here at five o'clock. I'll take you to the Cult of Spirits to find your parents."
With that, he stood up, took a couple of steps, then paused again.
"If you want to call your sisters, that's fine too."
There was always an air of mystery about him; he concealed his thoughts so deeply that I could never truly grasp what he was thinking.
Watching his retreating figure, the waves gently brushed against the shore, yet they had no effect on him.
...
Returning alone to the wooden cabin, the big man was still there.
Like a guardian deity, he sat at the door on a stool, and his eyes lit up when he saw me.
"Yan Xi, you're back! I've kept everything warm for you. You can eat as soon as you arrive."
Some people are like that; they constantly gauge their feelings through their actions.
Mingyue stared at me with a smile in her eyes. "Yan Xi, how did you end up meeting this big guy?"
"What do you mean?" I asked, puzzled by her words.
"You have no idea! When you weren't here, I couldn't even sneak in a few extra bites of food. This guy insisted on saving it all for you. You eat enough for two people; he won't let you go hungry."
Hearing Mingyue's words made me laugh. That really sounded like something the big man would say.
He was always proactive when it came to my affairs, just like with the Island Master.
"Bright Moon, I'm planning to go to the Cult of Spirits. Can you stay on the island by yourself?"
Even with the Island Master present, going to the headquarters of the Cult of Spirits is fraught with danger. I can't let Bright Moon accompany me on this risky adventure; keeping her on the island is the safest choice.
"What are you going for?"
I explained the situation to Bright Moon, but I didn't expect her reaction to be so intense.
"Gu Yanxi, do you even consider me a friend? You can't just leave me out of something this big! Let me tell you, Your Parents are my parents too, and your child is my child. I absolutely have to go this time, even if it means risking my life!"
Her unwavering determination left me speechless. All I could do was give her a hug, silently grateful for her resolve.
At five in the morning, we arrived at the beach right on time.
Bright Moon had woken up even earlier than I did. Perhaps she was worried I would leave her behind; she got up at four to wake me.
By the time we arrived, the big man and his crew were already waiting on the sand.
What surprised me was that someone else had also shown up.
"Uncle He, why are you out here so early?"
The Old Fox appeared with a pair of round glasses perched on his nose. When he heard me call him, he looked down, revealing his two pupils.
"If you can go, why can't I?"
"But..."
I wanted to say more, but he shot me a glare that silenced my protests.
"Great Master can do whatever he likes, so you don't need to worry about it, my dear,"
I silently thanked these people. They all understood how dangerous this journey was, yet they chose to accompany me without hesitation.
Looking around, I still couldn't see the person I wanted to meet and couldn't help but ask the big man,
"Where is Island Master?"
"The master asked me to go ahead; he has his own plans,"
When it was time to board the ship, it was still just the four of us.
Island Master seemed to have vanished, never to be seen.
I kept thinking about Island Master, speculating on why he hadn't shown up. Did he have some kind of plan?
Even Mingyue noticed my distraction. "Yan Xi, what are you thinking about?"
"Uh, nothing,"
The big man suddenly walked over, carrying a bag of items.
He glanced at Mingyue. "Fake Child, can you handle a gun?"
"Big Guy, I can use a gun; I bet you're still playing with your toys,"
Seeing the two about to clash again, I had to step in.
"Alright, Big Guy, I won't need any weapons; I've brought my own."
He nodded and handed me a box.
“Yan Xi, these bullets are specially made, arranged for you by the Island Master. Take them,” he said.
Next, the big man introduced the basic situation of the Cult of Spirits.
In fact, the existence of the Cult of Spirits is akin to that of a cult. They use various dark arts to manipulate people's hearts, drawing them into the sect for their own purposes.
The headquarters of the Cult of Spirits is located on a secluded high cliff, and travel to it is usually done by plane. However, only the high-ranking leaders reside at Cliff Top; the basic followers are below.
Today, we are headed to Cliff Top. I was surprised that the Cult of Spirits placed such importance on my parents, imprisoning them at Cliff Top.
The boat was too large and easily detectable, so we chose to dive in when we got close to the shore.
This time was different from when I was thrown into the sea by Chuchen; we were well-prepared, making it easier to descend.
Looking at the steep cliff face, with no place to grip nearby, it made me dizzy just to look at it.
“Big man, how are we supposed to get up there?”
He smiled proudly. “Don’t worry; what era do you think this is? Do you still think we need to throw a rope and climb up with our strength?”
He handed us a pair of gloves. “The Island Master specifically sent someone to Silicon Valley to bring back this latest technology—Spider Gloves. With these on, climbing will be easy. Plus, we have a rope for Possession; we even have safety measures.”
Even with these gloves, I still felt an unease within me, as if something was missing.
Technology has truly advanced; this glove can stick to the rock wall. Just press a button to release it, and pressing it again makes it stick back.
Even with the tool, climbing is still quite exhausting for us.
Especially for me and Mingyue, the two girls are particularly tired.
By the time we reached the top, I was already lying on the ground.
As a result, we were yanked up by a big man.
He urgently lowered his voice and shouted at us, "Have you both lost your minds? How dare you lie here? Don’t you know this place is filled with surveillance cameras? Do you want to expose yourselves completely?"
It felt like a bucket of cold water had been poured over us, startling us into alertness as we hurriedly followed his instructions.
We couldn't even stand up to walk; we had to crawl slowly through the grass.
No wonder the big man forced us to change into green clothes before leaving; it was for this reason. Such camouflage is hard to detect.
It was fine for them, but I had a child in my belly. It was incredibly painful for me to crawl forward with my stomach rubbing against the ground.
After crawling just a few steps, I was already out of breath, and a sharp pain shot through my abdomen.
I wiped my forehead slightly and continued to crawl forward.
"Yan Xi, are you okay?"
Mingyue stopped and expressed her concern for me.
Seeing everyone slow down because of me, I could only muster all my strength to keep moving forward.
"Don't worry, let's pick up the pace,"
Suddenly, a strange sound came from the bushes.
Curiously, I turned around.
To my surprise, there was a snake as thick as my waist, its two red eyes fixed on me, flicking its forked tongue.
