As night fell, I waited until around 1 AM, and finally, the big man arrived.
Dressed in black, he stealthily entered the cell with a huge flashlight in hand.
"Yan Xi, are you awake?"
The moment he called my name, I immediately stood up and walked over to him.
"Big man, what do you want from me?"
He looked a bit anxious. "Yan Xi, just come out for a moment. We can talk outside."
"No way. If you don't tell me what's going on, I'm not going anywhere."
I stood my ground, feeling that something was off about this place and unwilling to follow him.
"Oh come on, Yan Xi. The Master just left the island at 1 AM. I rushed over to find you because I wanted to take you out. Why are you being so stubborn?"
"Your Island Master left the island? Where did he go?"
The big man shook his head, indicating he didn't know. However, he wanted to take me out because he felt uncomfortable in the cell.
I wanted him to let He Zhi Yong out too since I still had questions for him, but he refused.
"Yan Xi, that's absolutely not possible. Sneaking you out without the Master's permission is already a violation. If I let that old blind man out too, the Master would skin me alive."
Hearing his dilemma, I didn't press him further.
"Big guy, how about I stay here too? This dungeon seems quite nice," I suggested.
Suddenly, his expression changed dramatically, and he shouted, "No way! How can you stay in a place like this with such a precious child in your belly?"
I found it strange that he seemed to care more about the baby than I did. Anyone unaware of the situation might think the child was his.
Unable to argue with him, I eventually followed him back to the wooden cabin.
"Big guy, when will the Island Master return?" I asked.
"I don't know. The master is always unpredictable; I'm not sure," he replied.
I had initially thought it was something significant, but it turned out he only wanted to take me out of the cell. This big guy really put me through a sleepless night.
In the middle of the night, I heard a familiar ringing sound.
That sound—it was the alarm that would only go off if someone broke in. Realizing this, I immediately sprang up.
As I stepped outside, I saw a tall figure hurriedly running into the darkness.
Recognizing it was the big guy, I quickly followed after him.
I rushed to the Watchtower, panting heavily. The big man had already calmly pressed the mechanism.
As he handed me the binoculars, I looked out at the Sea Surface.
Near the coast, there were about a dozen black figures constantly moving.
The water was too dark to see its color, but I could make out the Silver Triangle Flags. The Ming Sharks had arrived.
It seemed like nothing serious; it was just the Cult of Spirits causing trouble again.
I used to think that death was a significant matter, but after seeing it so often, life and death felt trivial.
I put down the binoculars and waited for the big man to finish tidying up before heading back with him.
Before long, I noticed something was off. Sweat was pouring down his forehead, sliding down his cheeks.
I quickly picked up the binoculars to check again. The dozen black figures on the Sea Surface had vanished.
All that remained were dozens of Great White Sharks, floating belly-up on the Sea Surface.
"Big man, what's going on?" I asked.
"I fell for their trick. What came in wasn't people at all, but corpses laced with drugs," he said, looking utterly dejected. I instantly understood.
It seems that the Cult of Spirits has found a way to deal with the shark, which is why they have come to attack.
Sure enough, after the shark was killed, a boat arrived on the sea surface.
The boat was small, but it was crowded with people.
From the looks of it, the Cult of Spirits had come prepared today.
"Big man, are there others on the island? Don't you have subordinates?"
"There's only me and the master on the island. The master doesn't like having too many people around; those others are in H City, not on the island."
The people on the boat disembarked, making a ruckus as they did so, each armed with weapons. Leading them was Shangguan Zili.
This woman truly was relentless; she seemed to appear wherever one went.
"Yan Xi, you go hide back in the prison. I'll confront them. We absolutely cannot let them cause trouble on the island."
The big man had a resolute look on his face as he grabbed his weapon and prepared to charge out.
In a swift motion, someone stepped in front of him, blocking his path.
"Big man, calm down. Going out now is just asking for death."
He was furious and shouted at me, "What else can we do? Let them run rampant on the island? That would tarnish the master's reputation. I can't allow that."
"Don't rush. You didn't quite understand what I meant. I'm not saying we should confront them head-on. Their numbers are their advantage, but we have our own advantages, don't we?"
He looked at me with a puzzled expression. "Our advantages?"
"Yes, our advantage is that we know this island well. We can set traps to ensnare them. You've set many traps while hunting, right? Now is the time to use them."
He slapped his forehead and exclaimed, "How could I be so foolish? I didn't think of that!"
Shangguan Zili and his group had already landed on the island and rushed to the wooden cabin.
The big man and I stayed behind, hiding in the nearby woods.
Watching the crowd, I felt a sense of worry.
What we had done so far could only slow them down. I hoped we could hold out until the Island Master returned.
As long as he was back, ten Shangguan Zili would be no problem.
When Shangguan Zili pushed open the door, a loud crash echoed as a large pot fell from above, dousing him in a torrent of black oil. Flames ignited instantly.
The first person to charge forward became engulfed in flames and barreled into the crowd behind him, causing chaos as people scattered in all directions.
"Bang,"
With a gunshot, the fiery figure fell to the ground.
I never expected they would bring guns. The original plan was for the big man to run out and lead them into the trap.
But now I was worried because I hadn't anticipated they would come armed.
I grabbed the big man's arm. "Don't go."
He gritted his teeth and said, "Don't worry. If anything happens, leave immediately. There's a boat to the north. If you take it to the clubhouse in H City, the people on the island will protect you."
It felt like he was making arrangements for after his departure as he shot out like a rocket.
"Come on! I'm right here!"
He shouted from a distance, drawing everyone's attention before charging forward.
Now it was my turn. I was responsible for pulling the trap's button when everyone arrived.
As the big man neared the designated spot, suddenly,
"Bang,"
With another gunshot, I turned to look and saw the big man kneeling on the ground. It seemed he had been shot.
Just as I was about to rush out to rescue him, he insisted on standing up and crawled to the agreed location.
Shangguan Zili was quite clever; she didn’t come herself but sent a few of her subordinates instead.
As a result, all those she sent ended up trapped in our pit.
In that pit, we had buried sharpened bamboo sticks; falling in meant certain death.
We lost quite a few people, and Shangguan Zili began to act more cautiously.
I was struggling to support the big man, moving particularly slowly. He had been shot in the leg.
Fortunately, it was in the leg and not a vital area; otherwise, we would be in serious trouble.
“Big man, hang in there. We need to get to the dungeon first,” I urged.
He was sweating profusely, enduring the pain as he said, “Yan Xi, you should go. It’s not going to be easy today. As long as you can escape, I don’t care if I die. You go; I’ll cover you.”
“What nonsense! We’re friends. How could I possibly leave you behind?”
I managed to drag the big man into the dungeon and closed the heavy door behind us. I leaned against it, gasping for breath.
“I’m exhausted. Why did the Cult of Spirits have to attack today of all days? The Island Master isn’t even here,” I complained.
“Yan Xi, the Cult of Spirits only dared to come because they saw that the Island Master was out. This dungeon isn’t safe; you should leave. I’ll hold them off,” he insisted.
I was a bit angry, pointing at his head.
"You’re talking nonsense. Didn’t I just tell you? I won’t abandon you."
After being scolded, this big guy surprisingly had tears in his eyes.
"Yan Xi, you and your master treat me the best. The people outside all want to harm me."
I thought to myself, this guy looks so big, yet his heart is so soft, just like a child who hasn’t been tempered by society.
