He moved quickly and returned shortly, handing me a black robe.
I noticed a reversed "卍" symbol embroidered on it, indicating that he wanted me to blend in with the Cult of Spirits.
Realizing this, I quickly put on the robe and followed him.
I had no idea what was going on, but there were quite a few members of the Cult of Spirits around.
I walked onto the ship behind Chuchen, taking a seat behind him as his subordinate.
The ship slowly sailed out of the harbor and into the sea.
"Thud, thud..."
The sound of crisp footsteps echoed, and soon a pair of black boots came into my view.
Worried about being recognized, I kept my head down.
However, the moment she spoke, I recognized her immediately.
"You all, get these loaded up for me. You clumsy fools better not break anything, or I'll skin you alive,"
Shangguan Zili had suffered so much yet remained so arrogant and fearless.
I couldn't understand how she managed to survive in the Cult of Spirits; typically, someone with such a simple mind and ruthless methods wouldn't last more than three episodes.
Yet here she was, like an unkillable cockroach, constantly reviving.
Suddenly, a shadow appeared right in front of me.
Looking down at the shiny pointed boots, I swallowed hard, feeling an overwhelming sense of anxiety. I silently prayed that this woman wouldn’t notice me; if she did, I would truly be a sitting duck, ready for slaughter.
“Get up and sit over there! Is this where you belong?” she shouted from above. My heart raced wildly, and my palms were drenched in sweat.
Keeping my head down, I slowly edged away to create some space between us. To my surprise, the woman was still dissatisfied and yelled at me again.
“You’ve got some nerve! I’m talking to you, and you dare to ignore me? Lift your head so I can see you!”
If I lifted my head, it would mean certain death for me.
I curled up and kept my gaze lowered, hoping that my pitiful demeanor would persuade her to torment someone else instead of me.
But then, Shangguan Zili, without any warning, swung her whip at me.
The leather whip, embedded with needles, came crashing toward me. The moment the needle pierced my arm, it tore through flesh.
Blood droplets sprayed into the air, tracing a vivid red arc as they flew. I bit down on my lip hard enough to nearly break the skin, the metallic taste of blood flooding my mouth.
Not only did I have to suppress my screams, but I also had to resist the nauseating urge.
Seeing that I remained silent, Shangguan Zili swung her whip again.
This time, there was no way I could hold it in.
Even if I didn’t collapse, a sound would surely give me away.
The whip came flying toward me but suddenly stopped mid-air.
It was Chuchen; he had used his mind to control the whip.
In an instant, Shangguan Zili redirected her anger.
“Chuchen, what’s wrong with you? Why do you always have to oppose me? Is it because I’m dealing with your dream girl, Gu Yanxi, that you’re so upset with me?”
At the moment I heard my name, my heart skipped a beat.
I secretly raised my head and glanced at Chuchen. Seeing his expressionless face eased my worries.
“Shangguan Zili, if you keep causing trouble, you’ll never get out of this place,” he warned.
“Hmph,” she huffed angrily and left the cabin.
I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of situation she was in to be threatened by Chuchen.
No matter the circumstances, let's head to Qilin Island first.
Dressed in a red outfit, Chuchen sat down beside me and spoke in a voice only two people could hear.
"Can you swim?"
I nodded.
"Then do you want to take a nap? I'll wake you when we arrive."
"Sure."
With Chuchen nearby, my vigilance relaxed slightly, and the tension in my nerves eased. Leaning back against the wooden board, I drifted off to sleep.
In my dreams, the waves rolled endlessly, and my stomach churned uncomfortably.
I don't know how long it had been when I felt someone tugging at my clothes, waking me up.
Chuchen stood in front of me, flanked by two men in black who pulled me to my feet.
Though I didn't understand his intentions, I kept my head down to avoid being recognized.
Chuchen walked ahead while I was escorted by the two men in black, following closely behind him.
They brought me onto the deck and tossed me onto the ground. Thankfully, my wide hat covered my entire face; otherwise, I would have been exposed.
I dared not move. Since Chuchen had brought me to the deck, he must have had his reasons.
The deck was crowded with people, a cacophony of voices echoing around me.
Those people were all standing behind Shangguan Zili, so it seemed she had summoned them for assistance.
Chuchen stepped forward from behind me, blocking my line of sight.
"Shangguan Zili, this person just offended you. Now I’m bringing him here to throw him into the sea right in front of you. He’s wearing the Cult of Spirits' robes, and this is Qilin Island's territory. If I toss him overboard from here, he will surely die."
Then came Shangguan Zili's voice, "Hmph, Chuchen, why are you being so long-winded? Just throw him already, or I’ll tell the Master on you."
It wasn't that Chuchen was being overly verbose; part of what he said was directed at Shangguan Zili while the other part was meant for me.
Shangguan Zili grew impatient. Chuchen approached and personally lifted me up.
He placed me on the ship's railing and stuffed something into my mouth, whispering in my ear, "Take care."
In an instant, I felt myself falling into the sea.
I submerged beneath the water, too afraid to surface.
Once the ship had sailed far away, I slowly swam back up.
The first thing I did was remove the Cult of Spirits' robe. Chuchen had warned me that appearing in those robes in Qilin Island's waters would mean certain death.
Next, I pulled out the note from my mouth. It contained a message along with a pill.
Heading east, I encountered a shark but didn't panic. I swallowed the pill; as long as I didn't bleed, I would be fine.
It turned out that to prevent the Cult of Spirits from reaching Qilin Island, the leader had specifically set up man-eating sharks in this area of the sea.
I didn't believe Chuchen would harm me, so I tilted my head back and swallowed the pill.
I swam vigorously toward the eastern waters, and just when I was about to exhaust myself, I finally spotted a Silver Triangle Flag glimmering under the sun.
Inside, I felt both excited and scared. The excitement came from knowing I was heading in the right direction; the presence of the sharks was proof of that.
But how could I not be afraid facing a group of sharks?
I slowed down and cautiously swam closer when suddenly I felt a tickling sensation on my foot.
Diving down to take a look, I discovered a silvery shark had poked me with its sharp snout.
Startled, I flailed my arms and swam forward with all my might.
I had just escaped from the gates of hell; I couldn't end up as dinner for a shark.
I wasn't sure if it was the effect of the pill or if these sharks simply weren't interested in my scrawny figure, but I managed to swim smoothly to the shore.
Looking at the familiar coastline, I smiled quietly.
Qilin Island, I'm back.
With my last bit of strength, I crawled up. I wouldn't feel safe until I saw that big man.
Estimating the path I had taken before, I walked towards the Shack.
I had kicked off my shoes earlier to reduce resistance in the water, and now my bare feet were stepping on the sharp gravel road, blood pooling beneath me.
Fortunately, this wasn’t bleeding in the sea; if it were, I would be at the mercy of sharks.
The Shack was right ahead, and despite the pain in my feet, I lifted them and ran forward.
I pushed open the wooden door and shouted inside, "I'm back!"
What greeted me was a face full of dust.
What was going on?
I walked further inside, only to find the room completely empty.
There were no signs of anyone; even the basic furniture that had been there was gone, leaving behind only an empty bed frame.
Had everyone left? Weakly, I made my way to the edge of the bed and collapsed onto it.
After all the hardships I had endured to get here, he had left. What did this mean?
Beaten, thrown into the sea, chased by sharks—
I was utterly exhausted, unable to muster any strength.
The moment I lay down on the bed frame, I closed my eyes and drifted into a deep sleep.
Due to the high intensity of vigilance, I slept particularly restlessly.
In the darkness, a faint sound of a door creaking open reached my ears.
I jolted awake and instinctively ducked behind a nearby wooden stick.
The shadow slowly approached me, and when it reached my side,
without hesitation, I raised the stick and swung it fiercely at the shadow.
"Ah!"
A familiar scream echoed in the air.
Oh no.
