I trembled with rage, lifting my eyes and gritting my teeth as I glared at her. “Shangguan Zili, you—”
“What about me?”
She sneered back at me.
Unable to hold back any longer, I charged forward with Shiro in hand, determined to take down this Wretch and put an end to her arrogance.
It seemed she hadn’t expected me to rush at her. Caught off guard, Shangguan Zili had no choice but to engage in a bare-knuckle fight with me.
Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t stand a chance against her, but the flames of anger had ignited within me, doubling my strength when pushed to the limit.
She grabbed my right hand, and I threw Shiro high into the air, twisting my body to use my left hand for leverage.
With a swift motion, I swung Shiro, its sharp blade slicing across Shangguan Zili’s arm, blood splattering everywhere.
She winced in pain and released her grip on me.
Though she was willing to let go, I wasn’t about to back down easily.
In a quick lunge, I pressed my elbow against her body and brought the blade to her throat.
“If you take one step closer, I’ll stab you,” I warned, the murderous intent in my eyes unmistakable.
“Tell me where my parents are.”
My grip on Shiro tightened, veins bulging as a chilling aura emanated from me that even I could feel.
But Shangguan Zili was a master of manipulation. While I panicked, she remained calm, grinning widely as a smug smile spread across her face.
"Come on, Gu Yanxi, go ahead and kill me. I want to see if your parents can still stand in front of you alive after you do."
I trembled with anger. "Shangguan Zili, what exactly are you planning to do?"
She looked at me with a cold smile. "Gu Yanxi, why don't you stab yourself first? If I'm in a good mood, I might just tell you where they are."
No, I couldn't let her affect me. I had to stay composed.
I kept reminding myself to calm down; if she provoked me, my parents would truly be doomed. I needed to remain calm—only then could I save myself and my parents.
I fixed my gaze on her mocking eyes. "Shangguan Zili, so if I stab myself, you'll tell me where they are?"
She laughed. "Haha, I'll consider it."
"Fine."
The moment my words fell, I plunged the knife, Shiro, into the shoulder of Shangguan Zili, who was eagerly waiting for the show.
I swiftly withdrew Shiro and pushed it aside.
Watching the blood splatter onto the ground from her wound, I silently smirked.
"Shangguan Zili, if you dare threaten me, I'll fight back with everything I've got."
My voice was so cold it hardly sounded like my own, almost as if it carried a rhythm of Mu Xuanche's possession.
She glared at me in fury, her face pale with rage and her breathing heavy. "Gu Yanxi, you have some nerve to play with me."
I secretly chuckled; what’s wrong with playing with you? I'm here to make sure you die.
Planning to take advantage of her momentary distraction, I rushed forward and pressed the knife against her throat.
Unexpectedly, she was already on guard. As I approached her, she rolled away from my grasp and tumbled to the side.
I lunged toward her again, but she rolled over and shouted into the air, "Aren't you going to come out and save me?"
Anxiety surged within me as I realized she had a backup plan. I wanted to finish this quickly.
Just as I was about to stab down, someone tightly gripped my hand.
When I looked up and saw that strikingly handsome face, I momentarily froze.
Taking advantage of my distraction, she escaped.
I was pulled up by Chuchen. I stood there, looking at him, questioning him with my eyes as to why he intervened.
His cold, piercing gaze met mine, his expression dark and brooding.
Shangguan Zili seized the opportunity to pull me over and slapped my face hard.
"Smack!"
In an instant, my head snapped to the side, and I felt dizzy, nearly losing my balance.
A pale hand caught me just in time. Glancing up at the red mark on my cheek, I realized it was Chuchen's hand.
Furious, I shoved him away and glared at him.
"Chuchen, she doesn't appreciate your help. Do you really want to pursue some kind of tragic romance between senior siblings?"
That was Shangguan Zili's mocking comment from the side; she looked extremely pleased with herself.
"Smack!"
Another slap echoed, but it didn't land on my face.
I looked up to see Chuchen striking Shangguan Zili across the cheek, a cold light in his eyes that seemed ready to devour her on the spot.
Shangguan Zili covered her face, disbelief etched across her features.
"Chuchen, how dare you hit me?"
"You actually hit me for this woman. Aren't you afraid of being punished by the Master?"
Despite Shangguan Zili's tantrum, Chuchen remained silent.
I watched the farce unfold with a cold gaze. What was this, a dog-eat-dog situation?
Shangguan Zili attempted to lunge at Chuchen, but he merely grasped her wrist, preventing her from acting out further.
Fuming, she shouted at Chuchen, "Are you trying to betray the Cult of Spirits? Am I right? You want to return to your so-called Xuan Sect, which is why you're helping this woman, isn't it?"
Chuchen was actually from the Xuan Sect; I was taken aback by this revelation.
The Second Senior Brother was known for his talent.
He had passed away young and had fallen into the path of ghosts, standing in opposition to the Xuan Sect because his master was furious and refused to take in disciples anymore. It was a pity for such a gifted individual.
Recalling the words I had heard in the Xuan Sect, everything suddenly clicked into place.
I looked up at Chuchen, fixing my gaze on him without allowing any chance of escape. "You are the Second Senior Brother."
It was a statement, not a question.
He recognized it; he neither nodded nor shook his head but simply stared back at me in silence.
"Enough, you two shameless dogs, are you done making a scene?"
Shangguan Zili shouted angrily from the side, while Chuchen turned to her and coldly said, "If you dare say another word, I'll kill you right now, leaving you without even a soul to find."
The murderous intent flashing in Chuchen's eyes was so intense that even I felt scared, let alone the threatened Shangguan Zili, who was already too frightened to speak.
"Heh heh," I sneered. "I never expected that the revered Second Brother of Xuanzong is actually a guardian of the Cult of Spirits. No wonder Master has changed so much in temperament. Should I call you Great Guardian or Second Brother, Chuchen?"
He looked at me, his gaze flickering slightly, but he did not respond.
"Chuchen, what are you waiting for? Why don't you take this woman down?" Shangguan Zili shouted furiously from the side, filled with hatred and wanting to rush over to strangle me.
Chuchen hesitated for a moment before suddenly reaching out and grabbing my neck.
I never expected him to actually make a move against me. Caught off guard, I could only use all my strength to pry his hand away in an attempt to escape his grip.
He pushed me backward continuously until he had me at the door.
In a cold voice, he said, "Gu Yanxi, today is your day of death."
As he leaned down closer to me, he quickly whispered in my ear, "Your parents are not in the hands of the Cult of Spirits. Use Shiro to stab me. Go."
I waited for him, not quite understanding his meaning.
Seeing his eyes burning with intensity as he looked at me, I gripped his thumb with my other hand and forcefully pulled it back, managing to pry his hand open.
The tension in my neck eased slightly as I broke free from control. Seizing the opportunity, I plunged Shiro into his chest. This time, I was immensely grateful that my master had sealed the spiritual energy within Shiro; otherwise, this strike would have surely sent Chuchen's soul scattering, and he wouldn't merely be spitting blood and injured as he was now. I pushed him away and prepared to flee the dilapidated temple.
Since my parents were not in the hands of the Cult of Spirits, there was no reason for me to stay and let Shangguan Zili toy with me.
"Bang!"
As I leaped to escape through the main door, it suddenly slammed shut with great speed. I collided with it and was thrown back, landing hard on the ground.
"Hahaha, Gu Yanxi, did you really think you could get away today?"
A triumphant voice came from behind me; it was Shangguan Zili, her cold gaze fixed on me. She smugly clapped her hands, producing a series of sharp sounds.
Rapid footsteps echoed around me, and my heart tightened.
About ten men in black surged out from the side passages, positioning themselves on either side of me.
"Bind her!"
With a single command from Shangguan Zili, the men in black began to close in on me.
Chuchen stepped forward, casting a cold glance at them. The black-clad men halted their movements, seemingly intimidated by Chuchen.
Furious, Shangguan Zili grabbed one of the men by his collar and shouted at him, "What are you all standing there for? Get over here!"
As everyone looked at Chuchen, hesitant to make a move, Shangguan Zili rushed over to threaten Chuchen.
"Chuchen, are you really going to be a traitor? Don't forget her life. Do you want her to die?"
With those words, Chuchen's body stiffened, and the hand that was raised slowly fell to her side.
Shangguan Zili smiled with satisfaction and waved his hand, signaling the black-clad figures to charge towards me.
They surrounded me, and I held Shiro, watching them warily.
