Uncle Wang gave me a cold glance, shaking off my hand and lowering his voice.
"I don't know."
Those four words felt like a bucket of cold water poured over my head, leaving me completely chilled.
Seeing the Machete in my hand, I swung it in anger, pressing the blade against Uncle Wang's neck. My eyes were filled with tears as I glared at him, biting my trembling lip. "Tell me where my parents are."
He held his head high, showing no fear, as if he couldn't care less.
"Go ahead, do it. My grandson is dead; I have no desire to live anyway."
His resolute demeanor made my grip weaken, and the knife fell to the ground with a loud clang. I knelt down, bowing my head and letting the tears fall onto the floor.
"You really want to know?"
Uncle Wang's dark voice echoed above me. Sensing a glimmer of hope, I quickly looked up at him, nodding vigorously.
He narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing me with a piercing gaze.
"Please tell me," I pleaded again. As long as it could save my parents, I would do anything.
"Fine, I'll tell you one way. Take your Shiro to that temple—the one you know about. Remember, you can only go alone. Once you're there, someone will tell you where your parents are," he said before turning to leave, no longer looking at me.
I grabbed him and said softly, "Thank you, Uncle Wang."
His gaze towards me was somewhat complicated, but the previous gloom had faded.
"Uncle Wang, may I ask you one more question?"
I pointed to the boy hanging above us. "What happened to him? Why is it related to me?"
With that question, tears streamed down Uncle Wang's face.
"It's a sin, all of it is the Wang family's sin. We were supposed to sell coffins and accumulate blessings, but we turned it into a wicked deed. We shouldn't have listened to the slanders of the Cult of Spirits. Now we face a fate of being cut off from our lineage. Gu Family Girl, take care of yourself. The Cult of Spirits is not something you can fight against. It's best for you to leave the village as soon as possible."
A long string of words poured out of Uncle Wang's mouth without a pause.
He then turned and left, disappearing into the inner courtyard.
Looking at the boy hanging in such a tragic state above, I moved a stool over and climbed up.
As soon as I touched the body, the boy turned his head to look at me as if he had come back to life. Immediately, a wave of dark energy surged toward me, knocking me back.
Fortunately, Shangguan Mingyue caught me from behind, preventing me from falling.
I struggled to stand up and gazed at the boy's corpse.
No wonder the Wang family hadn't taken his body down; the resentment was so heavy that an ordinary person couldn't possibly approach it.
If one forced their way in, it would mean death.
I couldn't just watch the child hanging there like that. I planned to try again, but was stopped by Shangguan Mingyue.
"Yan Xi, don't go. This thing needs your blood to calm its rage," she said.
"How do you know?" I blurted out, and her surprised expression made me instantly regret my words.
Why did I say that without thinking? Now, the truth was definitely going to come out.
She looked at me with a bitter smile. "You know, don't you?"
I didn't dare nod or shake my head, standing frozen in place.
"Mingyue, you..."
I had intended to ask for something, but she covered my mouth with her hand.
"Yan Xi, please. Let's pretend this never happened, okay?"
I could see how hard she was trying to hold back her tears. In front of me, she had always been a strong woman; I had never seen her cry before.
She was always full of foul language, exuding a tough-girl vibe. Now, I couldn't find the words to respond.
With tears in my eyes, I nodded slightly.
"Mingyue, teach me. I want to save this child."
She nodded and took a knife from her pocket, handing it to me.
"Yan Xi, as long as your blood is smeared on this child's face and you help him close his eyes, he will be able to come down," she instructed.
Following Shangguan Mingyue's orders, I gritted my teeth and made another cut on the already scarred wound.
Mingyue helped me climb onto the chair, and I pressed my bloodied palm against the boy's face, slowly closing his eyelids. When my hand reached his lips, the child surprisingly opened his mouth, accepting my blood.
Mingyue noticed below and shouted at me, "Yan Xi, let go quickly, or that child will drain all your blood!"
At this point, I couldn't worry about that anymore. One hand was being drained of blood by him while the other held the knife to cut the rope above.
"Mingyue, now!" I shouted. The rope snapped, and the child fell.
Below, Shangguan Mingyue was quick to catch him and pulled out the copper needle from his head.
I climbed down from the chair and helped Mingyue place the child on the chair.
The child's eyes were already closed, and his tender face had lost the previous resentment.
Finally feeling a sense of calm in my heart, I bent down deeply in a bow towards the Royal Hall.
"Thank you, Gu Family Girl,"
The voice of Old Man Wang echoed from somewhere in the air, though I couldn't see him. He must be hiding in some corner, watching me.
I smiled lightly and took Mingyue's hand as we left the Wang residence.
Once outside, I arranged for Mingyue to stay at my home.
"Mingyue, wait for me at home. I'm going to see if I can find my parents," I said.
Shangguan Mingyue grew anxious and shouted at me, "That's clearly a trap! Are you planning to walk into your own death?"
"I can't not go. What else can I do? My parents are still in their hands."
Shangguan Mingyue gritted her teeth as she looked at me, finally saying, "I'm going with you."
I shook my head, refusing her. Uncle Wang had made it clear that I could only go alone.
Besides, I didn't want to drag her into this any further, so I was determined not to let her come with me.
"Mingyue, are you trying to get me killed?"
I dropped the harsh words and stared at her.
She remained silent, looking at me with tears in her eyes.
I couldn't bear to look into her eyes any longer, so I turned and ran away.
Behind me, I heard her voice, "Wait for me! I'm going to find Mu Xuanche. We will definitely come to save you."
A rare warmth spread through me, lifting the corners of my mouth into a smile.
Perhaps it was the frantic running, climbing up and down the mountain; my stomach began to ache slightly.
I gently stroked my slightly rounded belly, comforting the child inside.
"Be good, baby. Mommy is going to rescue your grandparents. You must behave and not cause trouble."
I raised my hand to wipe away the tears at the corners of my eyes. I knew where Uncle Wang wanted me to go—the temple was right there.
I took Shiro from inside, but got bitten by Yellow Weasel. It seemed it was time to return it.
By the time I reached the front of the temple, it was already dark.
Today, the temple looked particularly different. The once dilapidated and dark structure was now adorned with bright red lanterns hanging at the entrance.
The faint red light fell down, lacking any festive cheer or warmth; instead, it felt eerily unsettling.
As I approached the entrance, I slowed my pace and stepped inside.
My heart raced nervously, and my breathing was steady, yet in the eerie silence of the atmosphere, every sound felt unusually clear.
As soon as both my feet crossed the threshold of the temple,
With a soft "click," the temple was suddenly illuminated.
In an instant, my throat tightened, and my nerves were on high alert.
"Oh no,"
Another strange sound echoed.
"Bang!"
The door behind me slammed shut.
Cold sweat trickled down my back, and an itch spread through me, making my entire body tense up.
Summoning all my courage, I shouted into the air,
"Who is it? Who's playing tricks?"
"Clap, clap, clap..."
A crisp applause rang out from the front. I looked up to see a graceful figure appear before me. Every time I saw this face identical to Shangguan Mingyue's, it struck me as particularly odd.
"Shangguan Zili, it's you."
She wore a strange smile at the corner of her mouth, casting a cold glance in my direction before exclaiming, "Gu Yanxi, we meet again. Have you missed me?"
She originally thought that she had been discarded by the Island Master, but unexpectedly, this woman could still come out so arrogantly.
"Shangguan Zili, you better tell me where my parents are. Otherwise, I will definitely not let you off. Do you hear me?"
With a seductive glance upward, she feigned fear, patting her chest.
"Oh, I'm so scared! You actually dare to threaten me."
Then, she shifted her tone, looking at me coldly and said in a low voice, "Gu Yanxi, if I don't tell you, what can you do?"
