I stood still with Shangguan Mingyue, not daring to move, not even to take a breath.
We held our breath, our hearts pounding.
A wave of Yin Qi was approaching us, and Cao Jin moved with barely a sound. We could only feel his presence drawing closer.
I had already pulled out Shiro, gripping it tightly in my hand. As soon as Cao Jin opened the door to the room, he would undoubtedly see me. The moment that door swung open, I would leap forward, hoping to catch him off guard and plunge Shiro into his heart.
Sweat pooled in my palms, and I heard the sound of Cao Jin placing his hand on the doorknob.
“What are you doing?”
A sudden woman’s voice shattered the tense atmosphere, followed by Cao Jin's response.
“I feel like someone is coming up. I’m going to check it out.”
The woman inside sounded displeased. “Who could it be? My dad has set up surveillance in this house; if anyone breaks in, the cameras will pick it up immediately.”
As her words faded, Cao Jin's presence gradually receded.
Then came various sounds of murmurs from inside.
With Shangguan Mingyue crouching low, we retreated to a corner of the banquet hall on the first floor, ready to discuss our next move.
“Mingyue, did you feel the Yin Qi coming from him just now?”
She nodded, her brows furrowed together.
Just now, we were closest to Cao Jin, and the powerful Yin Qi emanating from him left me in awe.
I had initially thought that teaming up with Shangguan Mingyue would give us a fighting chance, but after witnessing Cao Jin's true strength, I realized the vast disparity in our abilities.
"Yan Xi, perhaps I have a method we can try," she said.
I looked at Shangguan Mingyue, signaling her to continue.
"Do you know about the Golden Gate Locking Immortal Formation?"
"You mean..."
She gestured for me to keep the details to myself, lest there be ears on the wall.
With a plan to deal with Cao Jin in mind, we contacted the Han to leave the Jin Family. Staying too long would draw attention.
Shangguan Mingyue and I were responsible for setting up the formation while the Han helped us figure out how to contact Cao Jin and lure him into our trap.
Just as we were busy preparing, I received a phone call that disrupted all our plans.
The Han informed us that there had been an incident at a merchant's house in the outskirts; someone had been found dead in the bathroom, apparently by suicide.
Normally, news of suicides wouldn’t be leaked, but I was worried that Cao Jin might act recklessly, so I asked the Han to keep a close watch. I never expected that something would actually happen.
The Han sent a car to pick us up; he had already arranged everything to allow us access to the deceased's home.
Upon arriving at the bathroom where the deceased had spent their final moments, I found that the body had already been taken away by the family, leaving behind a slowly pooling mass of blood. The nauseating smell was enough to make anyone gag.
"Are you sure?" Shangguan Mingyue asked me.
A surge of heat coursed through my body as I gazed at the blood; it filled me with an unusual excitement.
"Yes."
I suppressed the restlessness within me. The Nightmare inside me was too powerful. After taking the medicine Bai Qiling had given me, I felt a bit better.
One person dead each week—there was no time to wait any longer.
"Mingyue, we might need to speed things up."
That evening, we arranged for a big man to meet with Master Cao.
I asked the big man how he managed to set this up so quickly.
He explained that with another death, he felt urgency too, so he employed some rather extreme measures.
Jin Chengren had a thriving business, but his son was a disappointment—he was a gambler.
The big man set a trap involving his son, with the condition that he would bring Master Cao to meet him.
The banquet was set for that night at the big man's club. Everything in the private room was prepared; now we just needed to wait for Cao Jin to take the bait.
At 8 o'clock, Jin Chengren arrived on time, but Cao Jin was nowhere to be seen.
"President Jin, where is Master Cao?" Shangguan Mingyue couldn't help but ask.
Jin Chengren appeared calm, "Sister Mu, don't rush. Important figures always make their entrance last."
"President Jin is right."
Jin Chengren assumed we were the younger sisters of the Han clan, which is why he called us Sister Mu.
At 9 o'clock, the door to the private room was pushed open.
A figure in a black robe appeared at the entrance, and the previously restless atmosphere in the room fell silent.
Seemingly pleased with this effect, Cao Jin walked in with a smile playing on his lips.
Shangguan Mingyue and I had already changed into new identities, and with the talisman paper, Cao Jin wouldn't be able to recognize us at all.
As soon as he entered, the situation was still unstable. The Han clan had instructed us not to act yet; it was crucial since there were still many people in the room. If Cao Jin became desperate and tried to threaten us with hostages, it would create trouble.
Before long, one by one, the Han clan members found excuses to leave the room.
Meanwhile, Jin Chengren and his group were drinking themselves into a stupor because the Han clan had spiked their drinks.
Only Cao Jin remained sober. When we arranged for someone to take Jin Chengren out of the private room, he seemed to sense something was off and stood up to leave.
“Master Cao, why not stay a little longer? Leaving so early isn't good, is it?”
It was Shangguan Mingyue speaking. It was rare for her to hold back her impulsive nature and not rush in to start a fight.
A cold light flashed in Cao Jin's fierce triangular eyes, and his lips twitched slightly. “Who are you?”
“Who are we? Master Cao might as well take a guess,” I replied, trying to buy some time for the big guy to escape alongside Shangguan Mingyue as we circled around Cao Jin.
However, his patience seemed to be wearing thin. He lowered his voice and growled at us, “What do you want?”
“We want your life.”
With that statement, Shangguan Mingyue set the stage for what was about to unfold.
Cao Jin tossed a black talisman at us, showing no fear whatsoever. His gaze seemed to mock our audacity.
The black talisman hit the ground and released a cloud of choking black smoke.
Seeing us in distress, Cao Jin laughed triumphantly. “Hah! Can't handle this already? You still want to fight me? You’re overestimating yourselves.”
I pressed the button on my device, and a massive black net descended from above.
If it were an ordinary black net, it would naturally pose no threat to Cao Jin. However, this black net was specially crafted for us using Ink Line, coated with plenty of Black Dog Blood.
The moment Cao Jin was enveloped by the net, a hissing sound erupted from him, and a cloud of black smoke ignited.
"Ah!"
Hearing Cao Jin's agonizing scream was music to my ears. This wretch dared to flaunt his defiance using the corpse of my treasure; he should be prepared for my retaliation.
After his painful cries, I watched as Cao Jin struggled and pulled a black talisman from his pocket, swallowing it whole. With a sudden burst of strength, he broke free from the Ink Line net.
His speed surprised me.
The black net was merely the first step; we never intended to use it to trap Cao Jin.
Not wanting to linger in battle, Cao Jin charged toward the door.
As soon as his hand touched the doorknob, he was instantly rebounded by the door.
He turned around, glaring at us with a fierce look, his eyes glinting with a cold light that sent chills down my spine.
"The Golden Gate Locking Immortal Formation? Quite impressive. Today, Cao will show you what true power is."
I paid no heed to Cao Jin's threats. He had to be eliminated today; otherwise, I would be betraying those who had already died.
"Bright Moon, up!"
I shouted, and Shangguan Mingyue leaped onto the sofa, pressing the button.
A large amount of Black Dog Blood descended from above. We had prepared this specifically for trapping Cao Jin in this private room.
If we didn't deal with Cao Jin, we had no intention of leaving.
Every entrance was sealed with talismans by the burly man; even if we both died, Cao Jin wouldn't be able to step out of this door.
I was splattered with plenty of Black Dog Blood myself, not to mention Cao Jin.
Under the stimulation of the Black Dog Blood, smoke began to rise from Cao Jin's body, and he instantly turned black.
His human skin was fake, and the Black Dog Blood revealed his true form.
His skin was a dark greenish hue, resembling that of a Zombie, with only two rows of teeth retaining their color. He shouted, "I'll take your lives!"
He charged toward me and Shangguan Mingyue. Shangguan Mingyue immediately brandished her Bronze Sword and rushed forward.
I wanted to intervene, but a sudden pain gripped my stomach.
I reached down to touch my belly, sensing something was off with the baby inside. I quietly reassured him in my heart.
"Baby, don't fuss. Mommy will handle this and then come to comfort you..."
Under my persuasion, my stomach quieted down a bit.
I looked up to see that the bright moon was becoming increasingly difficult to resist. I didn't expect Cao Jin to be this formidable.
Trapped by the formation, with Ink Line and Black Dog Blood at play, he was still able to resist so tenaciously.
Holding Shiro, I rushed forward to assist Shangguan Mingyue.
The moment I approached, Cao Jin noticed me and struck out with his hand, sending me crashing to the side.
"Ah..."
It was Mingyue screaming. By the time I realized what was happening, Cao Jin's hand had already pierced through her entire shoulder.
