At three in the morning, the alarm clock rang, waking me instantly as I turned it off.
I nudged Shangguan Mingyue, who was sleeping soundly. "Wake up, it's almost time," I said.
Both of us lay low, like cats hiding under the bed, observing the surroundings with our hearts racing.
Suddenly, a chilling wind swept through the room, causing the curtains to flutter wildly.
A White Shadow floated in, finally settling against the wall opposite us.
On the originally pristine white wall, a blood-red silhouette began to emerge slowly.
As time passed, the figure became clearer and clearer.
It was a girl; her eyes were completely black, and she wore a cold smile. A long gash on her wrist oozed blood continuously.
One drop, two drops, three drops—soon the entire floor was covered in blood, staining the wall in front of us.
The blood began to flow more abundantly, seeping out from the wall and gradually pooling on the ground.
Both Shangguan Mingyue and I were frozen in shock at this sight. She quickly covered my mouth with her hand to prevent me from screaming.
"Scrape, scrape, scrape, scrape,"
The rhythmic sound of something heavy striking echoed in the room, reminiscent of bones cracking.
Slowly, slowly, a bloodied and somewhat grayish hand emerged from the wall.
Next came a shoulder, followed by half a head. She struggled to push herself out of the wall inch by inch.
Finally, her entire upper body broke free from the wall, but her waist remained trapped inside, leaving her form distorted.
When she lifted her head at that moment, I felt a shiver run down my spine; my face turned as pale as paper.
The entire face was twisted together, with eyes as large as copper bells. The mouth and nose were squished together, as if they had been compressed and deformed.
Having crawled out from a pile of blood, droplets of blood continuously dripped down from her hair, covering her entire face. Only her two eyeballs were a different color. In that moment of laughter, her white teeth contrasted sharply with the dark red blood on her face, creating a horrifying scene.
I could hear the sound of teeth clashing in my ears; it was Shangguan Mingyue making the noise.
Seeing this scene, even she, who had been through many battles, was frightened. As for me, I was already trembling in fear, my legs shaking uncontrollably.
“Mingyue, how about we hold off for now? Let’s call our senior brother tomorrow,” I suggested.
I didn’t dare to act. Dying in such a tragic manner must mean she had suffered greatly in life. The resentment was overwhelming. I decided to give up; my life was more important.
Shangguan Mingyue nodded without hesitation but then shook her head frantically.
I asked her what that meant; I didn’t understand.
“It’s too late,” she said, her finger trembling as she pointed to the side. I slowly turned my head to check.
In an instant, my eyes widened in horror. I shrank back in fear, retreating continuously, my face pale and lips trembling uncontrollably.
The female ghost had somehow reached the side of our bed, standing upside down and laughing at us. Her once white teeth were stained red, and her appearance was extremely unsettling.
Blood dripped from her body and slowly spread toward us, staining the floor red once again.
Shangguan Mingyue beside me was so scared that she leaped out of bed. I was a step slower; my arm got soaked in the sticky blood, which felt particularly disgusting and reeked terribly.
Taking a whiff almost made me faint from the stench; it was revolting. Fortunately, Shangguan Mingyue was quick enough to pull me out.
Because Shangguan Mingyue saved me, she offended the female ghost, who angrily lunged at her, seeking revenge.
Danger approached as Shangguan Mingyue grabbed the bloody hand that was lunging toward her face.
"What do you want?" Shangguan Mingyue's eyes widened as she clamped down on Chen Sang's hand.
"To take your life."
I couldn't watch Shangguan Mingyue get harmed. I rushed over and slapped a talisman onto the ghost woman's forehead.
A burst of red light erupted, sending the ghost woman flying back. Her evil eyes widened in shock as she stared at us.
"Who are you?"
I didn't answer her question. Instead, I asked her, "Are you Chen Sang?"
Her expression changed instantly, and I knew I had guessed correctly.
Seizing the opportunity, I planned to extract some information while Chen Sang was still weak.
I cut my hand and grasped her slowly bleeding hand. Somehow, I had developed the ability to sense her memories.
In an instant, a different scene unfolded before my eyes.
Chen Sang was huddled naked in a corner, pointing at a man in front of her and shouting, "You damned bastard, don't come any closer!"
The man squinted his eyes and grinned dangerously. "Your good-for-nothing mother married me with you as a burden but never satisfied me. Why don't you come here and let me have some fun with you?"
The frail Chen Sang was no match for the man, who bound her hands and pinned her down on the bed, cruelly toying with her.
Chen Sang's loud screams attracted an old woman. By the time the woman burst in, the man had already pulled up his pants and was preparing to leave.
Only Chen Sang remained by the bed, crying with wounds all over her body. Instead of helping Chen Sang, the old woman chased the man out and then picked up a broom to beat Chen Sang mercilessly.
"You shameless vixen, you worthless piece of trash! How dare you seduce my son, you filthy whore! Your mother is a wretch, and I never expected you to be so vile at such a young age. Just wait until I beat you to death..."
After receiving a brutal beating, Chen Sang was punished by being forbidden to eat and forced to wash everyone's clothes.
Having followed her mother into a new marriage, Chen Sang had hardly ever enjoyed any decent treatment here.
In the afternoon, an old woman stormed into the backyard with a stick in hand, furious. She began to beat Chen Sang, who was washing clothes, while shouting, "You ungrateful wretch! We, the Zhao Family, provide for you, and yet you dare to tarnish our name! Just wait until I smash that mouth of yours and put an end to you!"
Unable to endure any longer, Chen Sang tried to dodge, but the old woman was relentless and continued to strike her mercilessly.
Later, when Chen Sang returned to her dormitory, she found no comfort awaiting her.
The news of her humiliation had spread, and everyone pointed at her, calling her shameless.
Enduring the pain, Chen Sang no longer wished to cling to such a life. In the end, she chose to end it all by jumping from a building.
As I opened my eyes and looked at the fierce expression on Chen Sang's face before me, I suddenly didn't find her particularly terrifying anymore.
This poor girl was so young and yet had suffered such abuse.
While I couldn't help but feel indignant for her, I wanted even more to help her find a way back from this dark path.
I reached out my hand and gently wiped away the thick blood on her skin, revealing the pale gray underneath.
"Do you think I'm dirty?" she asked as she looked at me.
"Not at all. Trust me; you're a vibrant young lady. As long as you want it," I replied.
"Why don't you despise me for being dirty? Would you be willing to be my friend?"
Tears mixed with blood swirled in her eyes.
I felt an inexplicable palpitation in my heart. Every soul that refused to depart, every malevolent spirit, was driven by emptiness.
Their inner turmoil found no outlet; they were unwilling to leave this world because they still had words unspoken, still seeking someone who could understand them.
I tried to connect with Chen Sang, hoping to resolve her earthly grievances. "Chen Sang, let it go. I can help you."
But Chen Sang responded with a burst of laughter. "Hahaha, you can help me? What makes you think you can help me?"
"You can help me kill, right? Can you give me strength?"
Just as Chen Sang lunged at me, I noticed a mark appearing on her forehead—a black inverted swastika.
It seemed that everything was once again tied to the Cult of Spirits. While I pondered how to persuade Chen Sang, she had already begun to attack.
Shangguan Mingyue and I joined forces; she wielded the Bronze Sword while I held Shiro as we charged at Chen Sang.
Chen Sang was incredibly strong. With one hand, she restrained me while using the other to fend off Shangguan Mingyue.
I swung Shiro back, aiming to stab her, but she dodged and whipped her hair at me, knocking me to the ground.
Seeing my peril, Shangguan Mingyue rushed over. She pulled out the Ink Binding Thread and tossed one end to me.
"Go!"
At her command, we both charged at Chen Sang simultaneously.
We forced Chen Sang into a corner. With nowhere to retreat, she became ensnared by the Ink Binding Thread, which glowed red as it wrapped around her.
"Ah,"
She let out a heart-wrenching scream, waving her hands as if to charge at us.
Shangguan Mingyue and I held her tightly; it was no joke—if she got free, we would be dead.
"I want you all to die! Let me go, Wretch!"
No matter how she cursed, Shangguan Mingyue and I kept her bound, waiting for her to tire before dealing with her.
Just when we thought we were close to success, a wave of black smoke surged toward us.
When I opened my eyes again, the Ink Binding Thread had been cut, and Chen Sang was nowhere to be found.
"What happened?" I stared blankly at Shangguan Mingyue.
