Standing at the bottom of the cave, I pondered whether this cave was related to the Cult of Spirits, which was why my senior brother had initially forbidden us from getting involved.
Hearing someone call my name, I looked up to see it was Li Kui. It seemed he had also received the news and greeted me warmly alongside Shangguan Mingyue.
Mu Xuanche appeared reluctant for me to be close to men. He glanced at Li Kui, causing Li Kui to step back in fright.
I had originally planned to enter the cave, but when I reached the entrance, I discovered that the talisman sealing it was missing.
Hanging at the cave's mouth were nine bloody Black Cats, all having their throats slit and drained of blood. Their eyeballs were pierced with long incense sticks.
The sight was horrifying, making it hard to look a second time.
Seeing this scene, Li Mubai exclaimed, "The Nine Cat Soul Locking Formation."
The souls of cats are considered evil spirits, and they easily harbor resentment after death. Among them, the Black Cat carries the deepest grudge.
The combined resentment of nine Black Cats was sealed at the cave's entrance. Without sufficient skill, one would surely be unable to approach.
Li Mubai turned to our master and asked, "Master, should we still go in?"
Our master pulled out a few copper coins from his pocket and dropped them on the ground. He then used a twig to draw a circle in the dirt and inscribed a Taiji Gossip circle within it. After shaking the coins in his palm, he tossed them into the circle.
"Great misfortune," he declared.
When everyone saw the Hexagram on the ground, they were all stunned. Even I could tell it was an ominous sign, let alone the others. Everyone was waiting for the master's answer, curious about what would happen next.
The master sighed, bent down to pick up the copper coin from the ground, and said to everyone, "The Ancestor Master does not provide us with food today; we will rest and come back tomorrow."
The group was arranged by Li Kui into the dormitory of the mountain lodge. Our team was on the second floor, while the others were placed on the third floor.
As soon as Mu Xuanche entered the room, he locked me inside and insisted that I go to sleep, not allowing me to leave.
I protested, "I'm not sleeping; I already had enough rest on the way here."
Mu Xuanche rolled over onto the bed and hugged me tightly. "If you don't want to sleep, then let's do something else."
At first, I didn't quite get it, but when I saw the fire in his eyes, it suddenly clicked. Damn it, this guy was thinking about that again.
Even after everything we've been through, my face still flushed at the mention of it, and I couldn't bring myself to look at him.
He reached out and touched my collar. I was wearing a white shirt while he wore a black one; together we had a couple's outfit vibe.
Bang.
It was the sound of a button falling to the floor.
Even the faintest sound could be heard in the stillness of the room. I reached out and pressed my hand against his, lowering my head shyly as I said, "Don't, the baby is still in my belly."
His voice was charming yet commanding. "My son, what is there to be afraid of?"
"How do you know it's a son? What if it's a daughter?"
Having been mocked by neighbors in the village for having a girl, I couldn't help but worry. If Mu Xuanche wanted a boy, my heart would surely sink.
The warmth in his deep, dark eyes grew stronger. "A daughter would be even better. I'll pamper both of you."
Could it be that Iceberg Lord was speaking so much for once? I was completely entranced, to the point that I didn't even notice all the buttons on my clothes had come undone.
His cold body leaned closer to me; it was the first time our bodies had made contact, and I felt a flutter of anticipation for what was to come.
His cool fingers lifted my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze.
With his handsome face, chiseled features, and dark eyes holding a wicked smile, he was unforgettable with just one glance.
My heart raced with anxiety as I held my breath, thumping loudly in my chest.
Raising his eyebrows, a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth as he buried his head in my neck, his cold lips wandering over my skin, leaving heavy marks.
I kept my eyes closed, too afraid to face it all. He leisurely unbuckled his belt and leaned closer.
The sensation beneath him stirred slightly, and I blushed, unable to speak, waiting for his next move.
Suddenly, he smiled gently, and his gaze softened in an instant.
His long fingers lifted my chin, forcing me to meet his eyes, and then his lips lightly brushed against my forehead.
Just a kiss, unlike the storms of the past; this time he was gentle, a stark contrast to his usual domineering nature.
After several tender moments, I slowly drifted off to sleep.
Before I fell asleep completely, I remembered something I had forgotten to ask Mu Xuanche: the blood mark on my hand seemed to have stopped creeping up. But I was too tired to ask and soon succumbed to slumber.
I had no idea how long I slept when Mu Xuanche pulled me up.
My eyelids felt heavy and uncomfortable; I could barely open my eyes as he forced them apart just enough for a sliver of light.
Looking outside, it was still pitch black. I asked, "What time is it?"
"It's one o'clock in the morning."
Mu Xuanche's response brought me back to my senses. It was only a little past one, and I wondered why he was waking me up.
When I looked up at him, he was already dressed and waiting for me. I pouted and asked, "Where are we going?"
"Put on some light clothes and come with me," he said.
Seeing the serious expression on his face, I didn't dare to ask any more questions.
I quickly got out of bed and got myself ready. Instead of taking me out through the front door, he led me down the pipes from the second floor.
I clung to his back as he climbed down.
In just a few seconds, we reached the ground with astonishing speed.
He didn't set me down but continued to carry me as we ran toward the back mountain.
When we arrived, I noticed that Master and the others were already waiting at the cave entrance. The nine Black Cats that had been there earlier were nowhere to be found, not even a trace of blood; it seemed they had been cleaned up.
I leaned closer to Shangguan Mingyue and asked, "What happened? Why did we suddenly switch to a nighttime operation?"
She replied in a low voice, "Master is quite talkative, so he deliberately created a big ominous sign to help us avoid attention."
Having been here once before, I was somewhat familiar with the surroundings.
Without much trouble, we entered the cave. Last time I was in the Main Hall, I encountered Li Mubai, and then everyone went outside.
As we reached the Main Hall, we discovered a massive Disc placed in the center.
The Disc was supported by a gigantic statue, with six people kneeling beneath it. The heads of these six individuals had all been severed, and they held up the statue with their outstretched arms.
My master and the senior brother led the way in front, while I walked in the middle with Shangguan Mingyue. Mu Xuanche was at the back, keeping watch.
When we approached the Disc to examine it, we noticed that it was divided into six equal sections. Each section contained one of the six missing items, and Guo Changhua had left behind an entire head.
"We're doomed; it's a trap!"
My master's loud shout shocked everyone present.
Everyone held their breath, anxiously scanning their surroundings for any signs of danger.
My master instructed us, "Li Da, protect Mingyue. If anything seems off, retreat immediately."
I understood that my master didn't instruct anyone to look after me because he trusted Mu Xuanche's abilities. Cautiously, I hid behind Mu Xuanche.
Suddenly, the entire cave began to shake violently. The Disc in the center started to crack open, and black blood began to flow from its center.
Creak, creak, creak...
The air was filled with eerie laughter, each sound louder than the last, causing the entire cave to tremble with each echo.
The ground beneath me began to crack, and I struggled to maintain my balance. Just in time, Mu Xuanche rushed over and grabbed my hand.
At the moment I felt his grip, my heart finally calmed down.
But the floor had already split open, revealing a dark abyss below.
"Ah..."
After hearing Shangguan Mingyue let out a piercing scream, I too fell into the void.
Mu Xuanche lunged forward, catching my hand and spinning around to shield me with his body. He wrapped his arms tightly around my back, protecting me from the falling stones behind us.
I had no idea how long we tumbled before we finally came to a stop with a dull thud.
I quickly turned to check on Mu Xuanche's injuries. In the darkness, I could barely see anything. Anxiously, I asked, "Are you okay?"
He replied in a muffled voice, "I'm fine."
His tone sounded strange, which only heightened my anxiety. I worried that he might be hurt but was too afraid to tell me. After all, he was no longer just an empty soul; he had just regained his physical form. If something happened to it now, it would be a huge problem.
I fumbled for my flashlight and turned it on. The moment the light illuminated the area, I noticed a flicker of green light in Mu Xuanche's eyes.
As I tried to see clearly, he had already returned to normal and looked at me with concern. "Yan Xi, are you okay?"
I shook my head, feeling something was off, but I couldn't pinpoint what it was.
Carefully surveying my surroundings, I noticed the visibility was extremely low in the darkness, and Shangguan Mingyue and the others were nowhere to be found.
Mu Xuanche pulled me to my feet. "Let's go see if there's a way out."
We walked to a stone door, but the path ahead was blocked, leaving us with only this one route.
The stone door was tightly shut, and we had no way to retreat.
What should we do?
