Shangguan Mingyue burst through the door like a flash of lightning. Upon seeing Mu Xuanche, she froze for a moment, her mouth agape as she pointed at him and stammered, "Y-You, how come you're here?"
Mu Xuanche didn't even glance at her; he walked over and lifted the door, quickly fixing it back into the frame.
Seizing the opportunity, Shangguan Mingyue rushed over to me, checking me over anxiously. "Damn, are you okay? I just rushed back and saw someone lying at the entrance. The ward door was tightly shut; I almost had a heart attack!"
I patted her hand to reassure her. "I'm fine. Mu Xuanche got here; he saved me."
When Shangguan Mingyue heard me mention Mu Xuanche, she turned to look at him and was instantly startled by his gaze. Leaning in close to my ear, she whispered, "Your Ghost Husband is terrifying. I can't handle this; I'm out of here! If you're okay, then I'm relieved."
She was about to bolt when I grabbed her arm. "Wait, I still have something to ask you."
"What is it? Sister promises to tell you everything," she replied.
I was actually concerned about Guo Changhua. He was the one who had tricked me into being with Yuan Yuan, and now that he was dead with no body found, it seemed very strange.
"So what's going on with that case? Any news?"
As soon as I brought this up, it seemed to hit a nerve with Shangguan Mingyue. Her face lit up with excitement as she even pulled up a chair, ready for what looked like a long discussion.
"I tell you, this case is getting more and more bizarre,"
"How so?"
"Our investigation revealed that each of the deceased had something taken from them."
Shangguan Mingyue's words reminded me of the information I had seen. The fourth victim had all the skin from their lower body removed, which meant that what was taken from them was indeed their lower body skin. But what about the others?
Seeing my curiosity, Shangguan Mingyue mysteriously pulled out a document for me.
After reviewing the document, I understood. It was a report compiled by the senior disciple at the master's request.
The first victim had their heart taken, which explained their sudden death.
The second victim had their entire trachea removed.
The third victim had all their blood drained.
The fourth victim lost their skin.
The fifth victim had a pair of real eyeballs taken.
As for the sixth person, Guo Changhua, they had their entire body taken.
The key point is that the autopsy revealed that all these items were removed in the morgue.
"The swastika represents the Cult of Spirits, but why did they take these away?"
I handed the documents to Mu Xuanche, hoping he would take a look. Shangguan Mingyue initially disagreed.
Mu Xuanche glanced at her quietly, and the hand he had extended trembled as he withdrew it, clearly intimidated.
He was quick, almost scanning the document before returning it to me, then said, "I'll keep this with me."
I smiled slightly, feeling a bit sweet inside.
However, Shangguan Mingyue exploded in anger, standing up and raising her voice, "What? You're staying here? What am I supposed to do?"
She had grown accustomed to being with me; recently, she had been coming to the hospital room every night. So when she heard that Mu Xuanche wanted to stay, she lost her temper.
I began to worry about my master; I wondered how he would react upon hearing this news.
Mu Xuanche frowned at me and gently stroked my brow.
From the moment he entered the hospital room, he had been particularly gentle. I could sense that his demeanor wasn't solely due to my pregnancy; earlier, when he learned about the baby, he simply smiled happily without excessive excitement.
I couldn't shake the feeling that this calmness felt like a quiet night before a storm, leaving me particularly uneasy.
Remembering something, I turned to Mu Xuanche and asked, "What is your relationship with Chuchen? Why does he consider you his mortal enemy?"
What I didn't notice was that when I mentioned Chuchen, Shangguan Mingyue behind me visibly flinched.
My hand was tightly held by Mu Xuanche, and his gaze was somewhat intense. His tone was noticeably serious as he said, "It's definitely him. Just avoid him in the future. As for that matter, consider it as me owing him one; it won't happen again."
I was taken aback that Mu Xuanche knew about my humiliation. How did he find out? Was it Chuchen who told him?
Lost in my thoughts, I didn't notice that the atmosphere in the room had shifted.
When I finally looked up, this was the scene before me:
My master and senior brother stood at the door. My master's expression was unreadable, while senior brother stared at Mu Xuanche with a wary look.
On the other hand, Mu Xuanche appeared completely unfazed, showing no sense of urgency, and continued to play with my hand.
Eventually, it was Mu Xuanche who broke the silence. "Lingyunzi, it's been many years."
I nervously fixed my gaze on my master, unsure of what he would say. It seemed that Mu Xuanche and my master were also acquainted.
"Xuan Wang, indeed it has been many years," my master replied coldly, devoid of any warmth.
"Haha..."
Mu Xuanche laughed somewhat arrogantly. Why did my master call him "Xuan Wang"? Was there something I didn't know?
When I looked up again, I met my master's gaze. He glanced at me before turning to leave.
Mu Xuanche released my hand and followed him out. I intended to catch up but was stopped by senior brother and Shangguan Mingyue.
"Yan Xi," Shangguan Mingyue said to me, "you can't go out right now."
But I was worried. On one side was my master, and on the other was my husband. What was I supposed to do?
As I struggled with my thoughts, my senior brother pressed me back down. He rarely lowered his voice when speaking to me, but this time he did. "Don't worry."
With just a glance and those two words, I obediently lay back down on the bed. Li Mubai had an irresistible charm; I guessed that the mysteries surrounding him were no less than those of Mu Xuanche. As the eldest disciple of the Xuanzong sect leader, it was surprising that he had no reputation at all.
The three of us sat in the hospital room, and no one spoke.
After a long while, Mu Xuanche and my master returned. Their expressions were inscrutable, and I couldn't decipher what they meant.
My master walked up to me, and I felt a bit nervous. I wanted to call out to him but swallowed my words instead, waiting for him to speak.
To my surprise, he said, "If there's nothing wrong, don't waste public resources by staying in the hospital," and then he pulled my senior brother away.
I was left feeling bewildered. Shangguan Mingyue took the opportunity to leave as well, while Mu Xuanche quietly began to tidy up my things.
I grabbed his hand to stop him and asked, "What did your master say to you?"
"Nothing. Just safe," he replied.
Later on, Mu Xuanche took me back to the hotel. Shangguan Mingyue was sent out of my room.
My senior brother booked her another room, and at Mu Xuanche's silent gesture, she quietly packed her things and left.
I was lifted up by Mu Xuanche early in the morning, and after packing my things, I was taken to the lobby.
I realized that with him around, I hardly had to worry about anything. There was a strange sense of happiness mixed with concern that I might fall into complacency.
When we arrived at the lobby, everyone was already there except for me and Mu Xuanche. Feeling a bit embarrassed, I smiled at everyone.
Soon, we were arranged to take a special vehicle. Sitting there, I noticed that everyone else looked calm and composed, while I felt like an outsider.
With no other choice, I mustered the courage to ask, "Can you tell me where we're headed next?"
"You'll know when we get there," replied the senior brother, closing his eyes again.
I cast a pitiful glance at Mu Xuanche beside me, hoping he would provide some answers.
He seemed a bit helpless with my persistence and finally said, "We're going to find the items taken from those deceased. Your master suspects that it doesn't actually require ten deaths."
Suddenly, it clicked for me. I exclaimed in surprise, "You mean the remaining four people were just meant to confuse us? That actually only six are needed? The other four are just there to delay us and prevent us from investigating!"
"Exactly. You're making progress," Mu Xuanche praised me. However, I began to feel anxious. His sudden decision to stay made me feel something was off. Moreover, I had a nagging feeling that this case was somehow targeting me; otherwise, what was up with that video? I could almost guarantee that the person in the video wasn't me.
After pondering for a while without coming up with any answers, I realized I knew too little. There were too many mysteries surrounding this situation.
Suddenly, I could hardly guess what was happening. My stomach felt a bit uneasy, and I had a lingering sense that this trip wasn't safe for some reason.
Being held in Mu Xuanche's arms, the bumps and jolts of the vehicle soon lulled me to sleep.
When Mu Xuanche woke me up, we had already arrived at our destination.
As soon as I got out of the car and took in my surroundings, I was stunned.
How did we end up here?
The back mountain of Li Kui Villa, the cave we had once visited but left unresolved.
