A strong wind blew out from the cave, carrying with it a thick stench that made my head spin.
Could this cave be connected to another? Where else would the wind come from?
I planned to continue crawling forward to investigate, but my foot was grabbed by Shangguan Mingyue. "What are you doing?"
"Yan Xi, come down first. There's something off about this cave; we can come back later."
If Shangguan Mingyue felt something was wrong, then there must be an issue. I obediently backed away.
"What’s wrong? Is it the smell or something else?"
"We need to prepare some things first."
After Shangguan Mingyue came down, she went to find Li Kui while I stayed behind to observe the terrain of the back mountain.
The landscape was beautiful, with mountains at the back and a vast sea in front, offering a clear view of everything.
Behind me stood towering mountains, while ahead lay the expansive sea. This place could be considered a prime location for feng shui.
If a burial site were chosen here, future generations would surely enjoy some blessings.
After watching for a while without discovering anything significant, I decided to give up and head back.
Early on the twenty-first day, before dawn, Shangguan Mingyue pulled me up and we hurried to the cave.
At the entrance of the cave, she took two oxygen masks out of her backpack and handed one to me.
"You prepared these yesterday?"
"Yes. This cave reeks of decay; even though we’re not afraid, it’s better to wear a mask than inhale too much."
I obediently put on the mask and slowly crawled into the cave.
Shangguan Mingyue was in front of me, holding a Bronze Sword in her right hand, and in her left hand, she carried the Black Dog Blood we had obtained just last night.
I followed behind her, gripping Shiro in one hand and tightly clutching the Bone Whistle against my chest with the other. My palms began to sweat, and once inside, my heart started racing, filled with anxiety.
We had only gone about thirty meters into the cave when we encountered a fork in the path.
Left or right? I couldn't decide at that moment.
“Mingyue, what should we do?”
“Yan Xi, watch me!”
Shangguan Mingyue pulled out a dark green turtle shell from her backpack. After muttering something under her breath, she turned the shell upside down.
Three copper coins fell out. As Shangguan Mingyue picked them up, she smiled at me and said, “Let’s go; Ancestor Master told us that the right side is a good omen.”
The cave was very damp and dark, and both Shangguan Mingyue and I had powerful flashlights on our heads.
Suddenly, a shadow darted between us. Shangguan Mingyue, facing away from me, didn’t notice it.
I stepped forward and grabbed her to make her stop.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
Although I felt something was off, I couldn’t pinpoint what it was. “Mingyue, let’s walk back to back; we need to stick close together.”
“Okay.”
I positioned myself back to back with Shangguan Mingyue; she led the way while I followed closely behind.
Upon entering the hall of the Cave, the surroundings felt significantly more spacious, and the warmth had dropped considerably.
Just moments ago, I had felt overheated, but now I was shivering with cold.
Suddenly, a shadow appeared on the wall above me.
I directed my flashlight toward it, revealing a tall man standing before me.
His blood-red eyes and charred face looked as if he had been burned by fire.
Those large eyes were fixed on me, giving me an unsettling feeling as if he was closing in. I reached out to pull Shangguan Mingyue closer, wanting her to see this too.
However, my hand touched something hard and cold instead. A chill ran down my spine. I swallowed nervously and turned around.
Once I got a clear look, I nearly fainted in shock; my mouth twitched and my brows furrowed in disbelief.
Behind me was clearly Shangguan Mingyue, but somehow she had transformed into the creature of the Black-Faced Red-Eyed Monster on the wall.
As that monster stared at me, I cautiously stepped back.
After retreating two steps, I bumped into something tall and human-like.
Turning around, I gasped.
How could it be another Black-Faced Red-Eyed Monster? What about the one in front?
To my left stood another Black-Faced Red-Eyed Monster, and to my right as well; they were closing in from all directions.
Cold sweat dripped down from my forehead.
I clutched Shiro tightly in my hands, my legs trembling as I took shaky steps. My breathing was so rapid that my oxygen mask fogged up completely.
With no other choice, I could only take it off.
The moment I tossed aside the oxygen mask, a Black-Faced Red-Eyed Monster lunged at me. I rolled over and thrust Shiro forward.
"Ah..."
The Black-Faced Red-Eyed Monster let out a heart-wrenching scream as it fell to the ground, its body glowing red and slowly disappearing.
The other Black-Faced Red-Eyed Monsters watched this scene, beginning to fear me. They circled around, hesitant to approach.
A foul stench assaulted my senses, nearly making me faint.
They spun faster and faster, my head feeling like it was about to explode.
I couldn't let this continue; I would surely pass out.
If that happened, I would become their next meal.
I pressed Shiro against my palm, and blood instantly sprayed from my hand, dripping onto the ground.
The heavy scent of blood caused several nearby Black-Faced Red-Eyed Monsters to halt their movements, gazing greedily at my arm, their hunger palpable.
I swung Shiro warily in my hand; they dared not advance. The only thing I could discern was that what stood before me was not human. Whether it was a ghost or something worse remained uncertain.
Bang!
A stone struck me unexpectedly. I had never anticipated these creatures would resort to throwing rocks at me.
More stones rained down on me, varying in size. I could only cover my forehead with one hand.
I dared not loosen my grip on Shiro; if I did, it would surely mean my end.
Hearing a buzzing sound to my left, I instinctively turned to look.
In an instant, my heart trembled uncontrollably as a Black-Faced Red-Eyed Monster raised a massive stone, aiming to smash it down on me.
If that stone, which was four or five times larger than my head, truly hit me, I would surely perish here.
I dashed forward recklessly, the footsteps behind me growing closer and closer.
At this moment, my anxiety reached its peak; being chased meant my life was at stake.
Remembering the Bone Whistle hanging at my chest, I gripped it tightly and blew into it.
This was my last hope. I felt a hand grab my hair just as I lunged forward.
I had intended to fall to evade capture, but instead, I plunged into a cold embrace.
Could it be that I had been caught by the Black-Faced Red-Eyed Monster again? My heart nearly stopped at that moment, and I shut my eyes tightly, too afraid to face reality.
"Wife, what are you doing?"
A familiar voice rang in my ears. I quickly looked up and saw it was Mu Xuanche.
That handsome face and chiseled features—there was no one else but him.
I jumped up in his arms, wrapping my hands around his neck and hanging onto him.
Burying my head in the crook of his neck, I said softly, "You finally came."
His magnetic and alluring voice whispered in my ear, "Wife, if you like this position, we can try it next time. For now, let me help you deal with your tail."
Recalling what happened that night made my face flush deeply. I dared not look at Mu Xuanche and turned to face the group of monsters reaching out towards us.
Mu Xuanche waved his hand, creating a gust of wind that sent the Black-Faced Red-Eyed Monster, which had just tried to crush me with a boulder, tumbling into the corner of the wall.
The large stone shattered upon impact, and the remaining Black-Faced Red-Eyed Monsters were so frightened that they knelt down.
They kept bowing their heads towards Mu Xuanche, who wore a cold expression and glared at them.
"Mu Xuanche, are these all strange monsters?"
Mu Xuanche explained, "These are Gravekeepers, created through a special method specifically to guard graves. Once someone’s presence intrudes, these Gravekeepers will revive to kill."
"Isn't that just a Zombie?"
"Wife, do you think everyone can become a Zombie? The formation of a Zombie requires certain conditions. These Gravekeepers were merely subjected to some rituals in life, which is why their souls linger in their bodies, retaining a sliver of consciousness."
No wonder they knew to use stones against me.
"So what do we do now? Should we rush in and eliminate them all, or what?"
Mu Xuanche waved his hand at me. "No need for that; let's go inside and take a look."
I soon realized that this group of Gravekeepers was following us like guards in formation.
With Mu Xuanche around, I felt significantly safer. Holding his hand eased my tension.
The surroundings were eerily quiet, and I couldn't help but worry about Shangguan Mingyue being alone somewhere.
"Mu Xuanche, we haven't seen Mingyue. Let's look for her first."
"No need; let's check the tomb chamber first. There’s only one path here; if she came in, she must be inside."
Mu Xuanche made sense, so I followed him as we moved forward.
Thud!
I kicked something underfoot, and it bounced off the wall, emitting a glow.
As I focused my gaze, I realized it was a flashlight. I pulled Mu Xuanche to a stop and used the light from above to illuminate the ground.
By the wall lay a decaying corpse, white maggots crawling back and forth on its body. Judging by the clothing, it was likely the worker who had gone missing from the villa.
I couldn't believe he had actually died here. His eyes were wide open in shock, his face frozen in terror. It seemed he had died of fright.
Mu Xuanche tugged at me to keep moving forward, but I stood still.
"What's wrong?"
Hearing his question, I pointed at my discovery for him to see.
Worried he might not see clearly from a distance, I prepared to crouch down and pick it up, but he stopped me.
"Wait, let me."
As I watched Mu Xuanche pull something from the dead man's hand, a giant centipede crawled onto his wrist.
The centipede attempted to bite him, but in an instant, it turned to ash.
If I hadn't hesitated earlier, I would have become the next victim.
Mu Xuanche handed me what he had retrieved—a shiny gold ingot.
People die for wealth; birds perish for food.
"Let's go, we need to keep moving forward."
Standing in front of the entrance to the tomb, I knew that beyond this door lay the main burial chamber.
The door was sealed shut, completely impossible to open.
I stepped forward and knocked; the door was solid, and unless I had explosives, there was no way to breach it.
On either side of the door were inscribed couplets.
"Underworld above and below, Life and Death Are Mine to Control," I couldn't help but ponder.
"What does it mean?"
