"Are you crazy?"
"I'm not crazy."
"You know very well that Xiao Yang likes you, yet you treat him like a tool. When it all falls apart, you'll be the one crying."
"Anyway, I don't love him right now. If he wants to leave, then let him go."
My friend wanted to persuade me further, but I made a shushing gesture at her.
She turned around and saw Xiao Yang standing outside the door, and she coughed in surprise.
I smiled at her and said, "I know it's unfair to him."
"But I just want to see him. This is my only chance to meet him."
My friend hugged me sympathetically. "You're going through so much."
I shook my head. "I'm not suffering. As long as I can see him, I'm fine."
Xiao Yang's hand, hanging by his side, clenched into a fist, the veins on the back of his hand bulging, and blood began to seep from his knuckles.
He composed himself, but the porridge he was holding slipped from his grasp and fell to the ground.
"I spilled the porridge; I'll go buy another bowl."
"Wait," I called out to him. "Get a bowl of pork rib porridge for Wei Zheng too."
Xiao Yang looked at me silently before turning to leave.
My friend picked up the spilled porridge. "What a waste of this bowl of porridge."
I shrugged it off. "He's just a backup; there's no need to fuss over him."
My friend hesitated before speaking. " Xiao Hui, don't you think that's a bit hurtful?"
I chuckled lightly. "It's just the truth; what's so hurtful about it?"
She patted my shoulder and turned to leave.
When Xiao Yang returned, he was holding a bowl of pork rib porridge.
He looked at me and asked, "What you just said, is it true?"
I nodded, "Yes, he’s just a backup."
"Then was what you said about loving someone also a lie?"
I smiled lightly, "That was a joke, and you believed it."
His lips pressed tightly together, his face turning pale.
I poked his chest, "You can’t be serious, right?"
He gave me a deep look before turning to leave.
That evening, I returned home to take a shower. Xiao Yang went straight home as well and took a shower. He called his mentor, "Teacher, I’ve decided to join the Archaeological Team."
"I’ll be leaving with them in three days."
He leaned by the window, gazing at the Phoenix Tree below. Memories of his time with Fang Hui flashed through his mind. He wanted to find evidence that Fang Hui loved him. In the end, he realized that all along, Fang Hui only loved Wei Zheng.
Time passed quickly, and soon it was the day of my wedding with Xiao Yang. On the second-to-last day before the wedding, I woke up. I picked up my phone and noticed many missed calls. When I answered, I gave Xiao Yang an order:
"Bring soup to the hospital later; we’re taking Wedding Photos today."
"Got it," Xiao Yang replied before hanging up.
He couldn’t understand why he still couldn’t let go of Fang Hui even now. Today they would take Wedding Photos, and tomorrow would be the wedding ceremony.
He decided not to attend the wedding. Fang Hui called a photography and makeup team to the hospital to take a set of wedding photos. She asked Wei Zheng to put on the groom's outfit while Xiao Yang took a moment to rest.
When he emerged in his new clothes, Wei Zheng was struggling with an ill-fitting suit and tugging at his tie. This suit had been tailored to Wei Zheng's measurements, and his build was similar to Xiao Yang's.
Xiao Yang suddenly realized that Fang Hui had him try on the suit as a reference for Wei Zheng. Fang Hui confidently stated, "Isn't his build different from yours? What's wrong with him trying it on?"
"It's nothing," Xiao Yang replied with a self-deprecating smile.
Fang Hui comforted him, saying, "Just think of it as being a caregiver for a day; I appreciate your help."
Xiao Yang lowered his gaze, a fleeting look of desolation crossing his eyes.
