"I'll tell you, that Yellow-Faced Woman at home, I serve her like a princess. What more could she possibly want?"
"I'm telling you, she just needs to be put in her place. When I get home, I'll make sure she knows who's boss."
I couldn't help but laugh. How had I never noticed how hypocritical Zhao Ming was? In front of me, he treated An Hui like she was the center of his universe.
He would call her "my wife" and "my darling" with such affection. Yet, in front of his mistress, he referred to An Hui as the Yellow-Faced Woman.
I shook my head with a smile. It seemed An Hui had finally met her match.
For a long time after that, I didn't see An Hui. The next time I encountered her was at the hospital.
That day, I had just finished a surgery and was heading back to my office for a break. As I passed by one of the examination rooms, I heard raised voices coming from inside.
Curious, I approached and was surprised to find An Hui arguing with her mother-in-law. There was also an intern present—Xiao Cao, one of my former students.
Xiao Cao was young but very responsible. He treated patients with kindness and patience, speaking softly to An Hui's mother-in-law. However, the older woman wasn't having any of it; she pointed a finger at Xiao Cao and scolded him, "What do you know? You're just an intern!"
"Get lost, call Fu Yue over here!"
Xiao Cao patiently explained, "Doctor Fu has a surgery today and can't come."
"Besides, Doctor Fu specializes in cesarean sections. Your daughter-in-law's situation is the same whether she has an abortion or not."
An Hui's mother-in-law was furious, glaring at Xiao Cao. "You crow's mouth! Do you really want my Huihui to have an abortion?"
"I'm telling you, she's carrying our Old Zhao's Family's precious grandson."
"If anything happens, can you take responsibility?"
Before Xiao Cao could explain further, Old Chen arrived.
Old Chen was an experienced doctor at the hospital, also specializing in cesarean sections. I frowned; with Old Chen here, it seemed An Hui's situation wasn't optimistic.
I hid by the door, listening to the commotion inside.
Old Chen said, "Zhao Ming's Mother, Zhao Ming's wife's condition is indeed concerning."
"She just gave birth three months ago, and her uterus hasn't recovered well."
"Now she's pregnant with twins, and her uterus can't handle such tension. If she doesn't terminate the pregnancy, it might rupture."
"It would be dangerous then."
Old Chen had already been quite tactful.
But An Hui's mother-in-law still erupted in anger: "Bah! What kind of quack are you? You're all for abortions; why don't you talk about how to preserve the pregnancy?"
"I'm telling you, if anything happens to my daughter-in-law, I won't let you off the hook."
Old Chen adjusted his glasses. "Zhao Ming's Mother, please calm down."
"I know you like Sunzi, but you also have to consider Zhao Ming's wife's health."
"She really isn't fit to continue the pregnancy."
"If we terminate it now, she can recover slowly."
"Otherwise, it will be harder to deal with once her belly gets bigger."
Old Chen's words were very clear.
An Hui's mother-in-law could make a fuss, but there was nothing that could be done.
She took An Hui's hand and said,
"Come on, let's find Zhao Ming and have him look for a good hospital and a good doctor."
"We're not staying in this lousy hospital."
"What a garbage hospital, they can't even protect a fetus."
"Just nonsense."
An Hui was dragged away by her mother-in-law, looking lost and dejected.
Xiao Cao and Old Chen exchanged glances and sighed.
I silently watched this scene, realizing that An Hui probably wouldn't go through with the abortion.
Given her mother-in-law's character, she would definitely force An Hui to give birth.
As for An Hui's health, it seemed her mother-in-law didn't care at all.
What mattered to her was only the child in An Hui's womb.
I shook my head and turned to leave.
