During the rounds, three intern doctors followed closely behind me. An Hui's husband, Zhao Ming, was whispering softly in her ear, his hand slipping beneath the hem of her hospital gown. The interns stifled coughs, their noise drawing the attention of the two entangled in their moment.
An Hui frowned. "Doctor Fu, why did you bring so many people for rounds?" She lowered her voice. "This is our private space."
I had encountered similar situations before. In my previous life, I had come alone for rounds. Back then, when they had just been admitted to the hospital, they were lost in their own world, completely oblivious to the fact that this was a ward where doctors and nurses could come and go at any time.
An Hui told me that she slept lightly and could only rest well in a single room. For her sake, I went against hospital protocol and arranged for her to have a private room. I even personally assisted with her delivery and took care of her postpartum recovery.
An Hui gave birth to a daughter, but her mother-in-law was openly dissatisfied. After An Hui stayed at my house for a month, her mother-in-law caused trouble for an entire month, claiming that An Hui had given birth to a worthless child who wasted food and even insinuating that An Hui had caused her son’s demise.
Just after completing her confinement period, An Hui returned to work. On the seventh day postpartum, she developed ambiguous red spots on her body. Her wounds reopened, and blood flowed uncontrollably. It suddenly dawned on me that during those seven days, they must have engaged in all sorts of inappropriate activities.
As both a doctor and her friend, it was only natural for me to remind her more than once:
"You've been injured during confinement, and it will be more dangerous for you to have children in the future. Even if you don't think about yourself, you should consider your child."
"You are just starting out; this is when you need money the most. You can't be reckless. What if your child ends up without a mother?"
An Hui didn't take it to heart at all. " Fu Yue, you're overthinking it. Amin loves me and wants me to give him a son."
"You don't know. We've been together these past few days without any precautions. He said it's easier to conceive this way."
An Hui told me that Zhao Ming was doing this to help her get pregnant quickly. Her mother-in-law had been sarcastic because she had given birth to a daughter. If she had a son, she wouldn't have to endure that.
As a doctor, I seriously told her how important it was to rest during confinement: "Your wound hasn't healed yet, and your uterus is still recovering. If you can't handle the tension of the uterus expanding, once it ruptures, you could be in life-threatening danger."
An Hui was finally frightened. Gradually, she began to resist Zhao Ming's touch.
Zhao Ming had still cheated. The mistress's belly was pointed, and the mother-in-law was convinced that she was carrying a boy.
An Hui was kicked out before her confinement period was over. With both of her parents deceased, I brought her and her child to my home. Yet, An Hui blamed me for everything and pushed me down the stairs when I wasn't paying attention.
I died on the spot.
In the hospital room, Zhao Ming was holding An Hui, his hand slipping under the hem of her hospital gown.
The intern doctors stifled their coughs, covering their mouths.
The noise was a bit loud, startling the two who were lost in each other.
An Hui frowned and said, "Doctor Fu, why did you bring so many people when you came to check on us?"
"This is our private space."
I let out a light scoff.
In my past life, I was just as foolish.
In my previous existence, Zhao Ming held An Hui close, his hand slipping under her hospital gown.
When I walked in, they were reluctant to part.
An Hui asked me, " Fu Yue, what brings you here?"
I pointed to my white coat and replied, "I'm here to check on you."
A flicker of displeasure crossed Zhao Ming's face.
"Doctor Fu, we're having a private conversation as a couple; do you really need to interrupt?"
"You’re making it quite awkward for us."
I quietly stepped back outside.
