New Era of Humanity in the Apocalypse
The water temperature was indeed very hot, but it was not unbearable. The structure around here was truly peculiar; not far away, there was indeed a Shore Entrance.
However, the boardwalk at the Shore Entrance looked somewhat strange. From this angle, the area appeared to be slightly distorted. This should be what is referred to as a thermal phenomenon, a certain occurrence generated in areas near fire sources. Just then, everyone heard a series of hissing sounds. Upon closer inspection, it indeed sounded like steam escaping from tiny pores.
The high temperature here indicated that there was a significant accumulation of fire elements beneath. Moreover, the heat from that steam seemed quite unusual. This explained why it was so hot here; the heat intensity was even more severe than that of lava from a volcanic crater. If one were to come into contact with the steam, it would likely scorch them instantly.
"Look! That’s land over there! Let’s go up; maybe the entrance is just ahead," Ross exclaimed, waving his arm and signaling everyone to follow him across.
But their fear wasn't about what lay ahead; it was about crossing without any mental preparation. They had no defenses at all. The heat here was far more intense than they had imagined. Taking a breath filled their lungs with scorching air, causing their eyes to sting painfully.
After feeling that searing pain, they still attempted to reach the shore. Truly, one does not give up until they reach the Yellow River. At Ross's command, many followed him forward. They initially thought they would pause to look at Freyr since he was the leader of the group, yet they ignored his authority and continued moving ahead. This seemed to be an act of usurpation.
Xiong Tai exchanged glances with him while Nosty furrowed his brow, clearly aware of the chaotic and discordant situation. He snorted dismissively and continued, "Cough, cough. I know you're feeling lost right now, but please don’t linger here too long. You can feel the heat rising, right? The water here will soon be as hot as boiling water. Although it's not quite there yet, we are like frogs in warm water being slowly cooked. We need to find a suitable way out; perhaps his approach is correct, but others may not care."
"As long as they can survive and get out, that's what matters. In a sense, a leader is a beacon of hope when the team faces difficulties. A leader should be able to tackle any problem head-on. However, your challenge lies in helping the team navigate troubles during favorable circumstances while being powerless in adversity. Besides demonstrating strength as a warrior, your wisdom and intelligence as a leader have not been fully utilized. Thus, this team needs two leaders."
"Alright then, let’s move forward," Nosty concluded as he tugged at Xiong Tai's tuft of hair. At that moment, Xiong Tai let out a neigh like a fine horse and quickly swam ahead.
He truly resembled a drooling mutt; it seemed that Xiong Tai had become something akin to a part-time bodyguard for Ross—more like a good dog who would bite whoever he was told to bite—now carrying someone on his back across the river.
On the surface, their team appeared united; however, it was evident that they had already split behind the scenes. Freyr understood that this division stemmed from Ross's uniqueness. If he wanted to maintain strong cohesion within the team, he would have to relinquish his position as Commander. Clearly, a true leader is one who can guide a team out of crises during adversity; although he worked hard for the team regularly, he could not match Ross's expressive capabilities in challenging situations.
In the current dire situation, there was little else to do but this, which would strengthen the team's cohesion a bit more. As soon as the shore was filled with people, they immediately began shouting towards him, seemingly urging him to come over quickly.
Freyr felt relatively fine; there was not much discomfort within him. However, the oppressive atmosphere around him was increasing day by day. Gradually, he found himself wiping away sweat constantly, and his chest felt tight. This change brought about a particularly strange state.
The water temperature around him seemed to have risen even more; it was now just as hot as bathwater. Although it had not been as hot as bathwater earlier, it was still warm, and some localized areas had just begun to resonate with heat. Now, these temperatures made it difficult for his muscles to exert themselves. It truly felt like there was no reason to remain in this pool; otherwise, he would surely be boiled alive.
On the shore, there were gasps of surprise from the crowd. Freyr quickly changed his swimming posture and moved through the water like a whale, creating quite a stir. The people on the shore were startled by the sudden change in the water's flow.
Everyone decided not to wait idly any longer. The water temperature was now steaming hot, and it was no easy feat for those in the water to swim closer. With Ross's help, they untied the nylon ropes and tossed them into the water, securing a lock onto a safe lifebuoy.
Although he had never experienced what it felt like in the water before, it was clear that even the lifebuoy could not withstand such high temperatures. There was no way to rescue the shadow in the water now.
As another whale took in water, Freyr quickly spotted the lifebuoy ahead of him. Grabbing hold of one corner of it, he pushed himself up with all his strength and shot out of the water. The people on shore felt a surge of excitement and shouted as they pulled the lifebuoy closer.
What else could they do at this point? Once he reached the shore, he realized his arms felt as if they had been doused with boiling water—burning hot and slightly peeling; it seemed he had suffered a burn, much like a wild boar splashed with scalding water. Freyr did not feel much pain; after all, he had used Gene Lock earlier to block out sensations of pain. Now, it seemed he could still control his movements reasonably well.
Moreover, this was only the first stage of Gene Chain, which did not affect his actions significantly. His sense of time had expanded many times over compared to before. As long as his Mental Power remained sufficiently focused, he should manage for a while longer without issue. He had used the first stage of Gene Chain many times before; any side effects had already faded away. Aside from feeling slightly nauseous and dizzy afterward—an effect that came quickly and left just as fast—he would be fine as long as he took some medicine afterward.
