They didn't need to worry about the situation outside; there were too many powerful forces behind the scenes that they couldn't afford to provoke. Instead of getting lost in such thoughts, it was better to focus on how to proceed from here.
Although the tasks weren't particularly difficult, there was no guarantee of returning without casualties. After all, every mission required exterminating a type of insect, similar to previous missions that involved obtaining specific biological organs.
There seemed to be no point of comparison, and this time the mission had been specifically assigned by the computer, eliminating insects with the same name. It appeared that they had found a loophole that humans had exploited, and now it had been closed. They would have to spend the same amount of time dealing with the same type of insect as before.
"The time we have is shorter than before. To eliminate those damn insects in such a short period and document the entire process is truly exhausting. Ever since the association tightened its regulations, it's like we're being treated like livestock," someone in the meeting room lamented as they looked at the mission details. However, it seemed this was also a consideration for calculating their performance points after completing the mission. Of course, everything had to be foolproof. Some things might be deceivable by human eyes, but electronic eyes were different; they could record everything. Moreover, they had received temporary mission equipment through accepting this task, which was still the same Survey Gem as before.
It was frustrating for Freyr. "But the association's actions are for our benefit. What do you all think? I mean, I don't have any quick solutions." Although Freyr felt angry inside, as a member of the association, he had to endure it. In society, one often faced grievances; you could avoid them by staying home, but everyone knew what that would lead to—loss of family support and economic independence would make future paths quite difficult.
"Commander, if there were a way to achieve our goals quickly, we wouldn't be frowning over the association's reform. Our team's harvesting capability is relatively weak, so we are definitely pressed for time. To avoid casualties, we must act with caution and strategy, which makes things even harder. I really don't know what to do now," Ross candidly expressed his thoughts. Usually, when he spoke like this, others had little to say. In other circumstances, if he was determined about something, it wouldn't become an issue; currently, the team's dynamics relied on Freyr's strength in favorable situations and Ross's intuition in adverse ones.
If they were truly cornered, there would be no ideas left. Although the current situation hadn't reached that point yet.
In fact, the association's rule reform was akin to a major upheaval; many team members might struggle to adapt—especially with tasks being assigned through a computer network—which removed some flexibility from internal operations.
However, even so, it significantly increased the occurrence of adverse events. The hassle of randomly generating Daily Tasks was greatly reduced. Overall, any common issues arising from reforms and upgrades would inevitably leave some people unable to adapt; this was undeniable. They needed to find ways to restore their mindset.
This state persisted for a long while until Freyr suddenly raised his head and signaled to everyone: "Alright then, if we can't come up with anything, let's set this aside for now. After all, we just started our mission; some things can wait until later. If necessary, we can extend our time for this task—we can extend it once or twice—but we can't fail three times in a row. We're still adjusting to the troubles brought by the upgrade. However, we must believe these difficulties can be overcome; perhaps you all don't realize how much stronger we've become with upgraded equipment and new team members joining us. All these factors combined create a new atmosphere for our Hunter Team No. 116. We will overcome these challenges together—right?"
Freyr rarely encouraged others like this; such behavior seemed foolish unless everyone did their part properly. Theoretically speaking, even if they didn't interact much with each other, it shouldn't pose too much of a problem.
Upon hearing this, Xiong Tai's gaze dimmed slightly; those words didn't seem to have a positive effect. Sometimes others held onto their own burdens that weren't easily perceived by anyone else. Sighing deeply, Xiong Tai said: "Yeah, if you're troubled, just eat something good to solve your worries—that's my method! It's really better than just toughing it out! Plus it can make you healthier—right?"
Ross shook his head in response: "I don't know if you're blindly optimistic or just foolish right now. We really shouldn't dwell on these things; instead we need to confront our challenges head-on! If we're here thinking about it now, we'll still have to confront those difficulties tomorrow! If we approach challenging tasks with such an attitude, won't that complicate matters? You may not know this but I've dealt with far worse people in my previous team than you guys! You're really lucky! I've spent some time in this team and also in others—this is true." Just as he seemed ready to continue speaking further, he was interrupted by Mackey's laughter.
"Um, sorry, go ahead," Mackey said.
"Is my place really that funny?" Ross frowned.
"Sorry, I just thought of something amusing," Mackey replied again.
At this point, he couldn't help but chuckle, and his eyes didn't seem mocking; it looked like he genuinely recalled something.
"Well, okay then. It seems you're not actually making fun of me," Ross said.
"Uh, uh, yeah, yeah, don't mind me. Just treat me as if I'm invisible," Mackey patted his chest to calm his laughter.
However, neither of them intended to ask what exactly he found funny.
After all, that should be considered a personal matter. Continuing to pry would only force him to reveal things he might not want to share. Given the current situation, asking questions could be quite perilous.
But Ross had already opened the door to inquiry because there were too many mysteries surrounding him that needed verification, including what had happened in his past and how he knew secrets that many others were unaware of.
