The battle had lasted for a long time, and it was already difficult for the Zerg to turn the tide. However, there were still some bugs approaching the city, and under the relentless assault from humans, they were crushed. By the time they reached the Tower, they were met with chaotic artillery fire and the sweeping fire of Submachine Guns, leaving them in disarray. Ultimately, humanity managed to hold their ground in this battle, suffering minimal losses on other fronts. The aerial guidance from the Human Alliance provided significant assistance, which meant their losses were not as severe. Additionally, the Mecha Association's forces also sustained minor injuries, with conservative estimates suggesting it would take at least six months to recover to their previous average strength.
At this moment, the artillery fire from the Tower had also subsided. The remaining forces used flying vehicles for remote surveillance, while Cannons were set to automatic attack mode. Most people returned to their tents to recuperate. Humanity had won a victory; dawn had arrived.
As these bugs approached the Tower, they were obliterated in an instant, turning into nothing but mush. They only had an advantage in close combat, which doomed this migration to failure. The Submachine Guns unleashed a barrage that severely injured one of the bug's leaders. The surrounding bugs rushed to provide support but were immediately blown apart upon getting too close, leaving not even a piece of intact muscle behind. The remaining leader also suffered heavy damage and was soon reduced to a shattered state.
In the conference room, Hilbert chuckled dryly, "It seems that this situation is under control; these little shrimp won't be able to stir up any more trouble."
After this wave of attacks, the casualty situation within the human camp was finally tallied. The most severely affected were the Human Alliance and the Mecha Association, so during the cleanup process, most of the supplies and bodies would be handed over to them. In reality, aside from the Mecha Association and Human Alliance, the ground forces sustained significant damage as well. The reinforced units experienced only minor injuries; however, there were individual casualties.
Meanwhile, both the Hunter Association and Assassin Association had barely participated in this war beyond setting explosives; they hadn't even engaged in direct combat before it all came to an end.
Afterward, they returned to their tents where celebrations began that lasted for three days. Most of the credit went to these high-ranking leaders working together; those who directly benefited from the war were none other than those at the top. Their command of this battle would be recorded in history as it greatly improved humanity's survival situation—unbeknownst to them, humanity had become quite formidable.
The returning troops brought back truckloads of gruesome bug corpses. These bodies would be sent to research facilities for specimen preparation or used for crafting armor. Surprisingly, some bugs that weren't completely dead were also recovered; however, they no longer had any capacity for resistance. They would be taken back to research centers where Psychic Sensory Users would extract information from them. It might be challenging to obtain relevant intelligence from the Zerg through interrogation, but it was worth attempting; without trying, there was a 100% chance of failing to gather useful information. Attempting could yield at least a 50% success rate—similar odds to pursuing a human girl. Psychic Sensory Users possessed such abilities; they could communicate even if language barriers existed since brainwaves and mental realms generally connected well enough. As long as the Mental Power among the Zerg wasn't too developed, they could extract some information.
The harvest was highly successful; 50% of what was gained would flow into the pockets of the Human Alliance and Mecha Association. The refined metal materials could be used to manufacture Airships—this was a significant return for all the manpower and casualties incurred during this war. The remaining spoils would be split among other alliances participating in the mission, with each comrade receiving corresponding rewards.
"In order to maintain peace at other strongholds, each unit should return to their respective locations," said Star Marshal during the meeting.
Following Star Marshal's orders after three days of activities, all units began hastily returning home. Members of both the Hunter Association and Assassin Association needed to remain stationed since these two alliances had incurred almost zero casualties while obtaining substantial rewards in resources; thus they supported those still clearing the battlefield with reserve troops. It should be noted that even scattered remnants of Zerg posed astonishing lethality and could easily harm teams scavenging corpses like Medics. Such incidents had occurred multiple times; hence Star Marshal ordered them to follow behind for protection.
Thanks to their efforts and protection against unexpected situations, things indeed began improving after this battle.
Freyr had become the busiest person around. Not only was he the Commander of the Soldier-Level Hunter Team, but despite his rough exterior and imposing stature, he possessed a delicate sensibility. Occasionally, he would sneak over to hide a complete corpse he had found, his speed so swift that even the nearby Medics, who were scavenging, could only watch in awe, completely unaware of how he managed to act so quickly. They certainly never expected that someone they relied on for help would also be eager to claim a share for himself. It was rare to encounter a Commander with such a predatory nature.
He knew that what he was doing might disrupt the rules, but as long as they remained unaware that he was pocketing these insect corpses for himself, there would be no repercussions. After all, who would quibble over the remains of insects? It was first come, first served. Many others were also secretly taking advantage of the situation, but they did so discreetly, pretending nothing had happened.
These corpses could later be exchanged for Reward Points upon completing their mission. As long as he wasn’t discovered and contributed just a little bit here and there, it could yield a decent return. Although their team already had plenty of Reward Points, their overall team development still seemed lacking. If they wanted to continue advancing, the initial requirement of five thousand Reward Points to upgrade from Soldier-Level Hunter Team was no small sum, even if they could afford it now.
However, those Reward Points were hard-earned. Spending such a large amount at once would still sting, which is why he considered finding ways to earn some extra income on the side to balance out the benefits.
Yet their primary goal remained protecting their operations; such underhanded activities needed to be conducted discreetly while maintaining an appearance of indifference.
At the same time, they needed to eliminate some insects crawling out from the sand. Most of these insects were barely alive; upon sensing nearby creatures, their fighting instincts kicked in, leading them to launch relentless attacks against the Medics.
Fortunately, the Medics always had Hunters standing guard nearby. In no time at all, these insects were subdued without any chance to rise again and continue causing trouble. So while these Hunters might seem dull at times, they were quite effective when it came to work. Over time, the Medics understood that these Hunters were like tigers dozing off; once awake, they could still bite hard.
