"Time to eat," Xiong Tai's voice rang out again. "Oh, I tell you, I can only work hard after a good meal. Being hungry is just like being a ghost of starvation. I've put a lot of effort into this meal; it should be the best hot meal you've ever had. Come and taste my cooking; it's not something you see every day." Xiong Tai filled a bowl to the brim with food and wobbled around to each person, giving a knowing smile before hurriedly returning to his seat.
"Let's go eat," Freyr said to Ross.
Ross nodded indifferently. It was only when Freyr moved toward Xiong Tai that he finally got up, still clutching the copper plate in his hand. He didn’t know what was going on with those plates, but he didn’t forget to set it down even while eating. He approached the pot, waited for someone to serve him before accepting the food with his hands, and quietly began to eat.
What could have happened to turn a child from the Kagura Sect into this? Freyr didn’t realize that he too had once been in such a state, surrounded by many psychologists who would talk and sigh, slowly helping him emerge from the shadows.
Was this what they called a mental ailment? Only by pouring out one’s troubles could one heal the scars within. Even medication couldn’t restore everything; the marks would forever be etched in the heart.
Indeed, it took many words to help him heal. As they continued talking, the atmosphere gradually became more lively. Eating in such a place had its own unique flavor, and there were no wild beasts around. The strange Green Ghost Vines wandered about them but never found an opportunity to strike; their weaknesses were far too obvious. The Ghost Black Vines were indeed very effective.
This meal lasted longer than any before. They weren’t in a hurry, and time was ample, allowing their strength to fully recover before moving on.
After finishing their meal, Ross found a spot to rest again.
He chose not to enter inside. If others went in together, there was a good chance he wouldn’t enter again. He truly didn’t know what was inside; throughout the meal, aside from an awkward smile he had shown once, he displayed no other reactions.
Freyr saw that it was indeed necessary for Ross to take some time to calm down; today was certainly suitable for resting.
Everyone settled in place, dropping their luggage and falling asleep.
They slept soundly that night, and when they woke up, it was already noon according to the watch.
After eating, everyone shouldered their bags and prepared to head inside.
With the previously predicted location in mind, everyone quickly entered, only to find an unexpected place that was very different from what they had anticipated.
It was a very spacious tunnel, where strange sounds often echoed. However, these sounds could not be heard from outside. No wonder the mindset could become problematic; entering alone might indeed cause discomfort. But now, there was no sense of unease at all. Ross had already adjusted his state well, and they continued to follow him deeper into the tunnel.
In reality, they all knew that those sounds were not particularly terrifying. The noises that seemed to weave through the cracks in the rocks likely came from numerous holes underground. Some of the sounds were indeed quite eerie, resembling the cries of a baby.
If this place were to serve as a stronghold, then this laboratory would be quite advanced, capable of forming a so-called protective shield—a perfect barrier that could completely isolate outsiders and ensure the safety of those inside.
Unfortunately, this was not a laboratory. From what they could see, the phenomena here were far more than just that; otherwise, it wouldn't provoke such intense reactions.
Such reactions could not be caused by mere fright; they buried their heads and continued walking.
Suddenly, a faint blue light flickered from within, accompanied by eerie sounds around them. As the lights drew closer, they realized it was a rather terrifying entity, floating like a ghost inside. Soon, someone gasped in shock, and the strange laughter intensified.
"What are those?" Freyr asked, pointing at the ghostly figures and the circle of emanating purple light surrounding them.
"Those are the last line of defense under the Symbiotic System," Ross replied with a slight smile. "Different paths lead to the same destination."
"Then how did you get through here? There must be some hidden door or passage," Freyr said slowly as he scanned his surroundings. Clearly, at this moment, he could only hope for something like that—a hidden door he could find.
A bottomless pit or some mechanism that would kick them out or even drop them down would suffice as long as it meant getting away from such entities.
"That's useless. Besides that entrance, there are no mechanisms inside. This isn't a tomb; where would any mechanisms come from?" Ross said. He grabbed his Windrunner from his chest and took a Feather to repeatedly polish it against the wall.
Then he nocked an arrow and shot it forward, followed by another Feather being launched into the depths ahead.
The arrows of the former and the latter collided with each other, and the one in front suddenly accelerated to an uncontrollable speed. It was a kind of speed that was hard to define, but it was undeniably fast.
Unexpectedly, the outcome was like this. The entire Feather surged against the chest of that elusive creature, a chilling breeze swept by, causing goosebumps to rise all over. It felt as if he had been solidified. Freyr strained to maintain his consciousness, nearly triggering the Gene Lock automatically.
The impact just now was truly shocking; he never anticipated such a result. However, it was too late—those Spirits seemed to have noticed their presence.
Freyr drew his sword, the blade roaring continuously. It was not surprising to have such thoughts in a place where sound traveled so acutely.
"What did you just do?" Freyr suddenly responded, but before he could finish, a strange Spirit lunged at him.
He could only draw his sword in retaliation. The blade passed through, but immediately afterward, he felt a sharp pain in his chest as if it had been corroded by acid. He quickly clutched his chest and then saw another sharp arc of light slicing through the air; an arrow struck the Spirit's chest, sending it tumbling backward.
The weapons they carried were not specifically designed to deal with non-existent Spirit beings. Only projectiles made from Alchemical Matrix combinations could suppress such entities. Clearly, the runes on that arrow had a genuine effect, and the Feather shot could be recovered for reuse.
Now there was no need to fear much; however, he couldn't shake off the feeling of being somewhat overwhelmed on his own.
"How many arrows do we have left?" Freyr asked.
"I estimate there are about three left. There are over ten of those Spirits here; it's a bit insufficient," Ross replied, smacking his lips before shooting down another approaching Spirit with an arrow.
