Silently, the two exchanged glances for a moment. Freyr was unsure of what would happen next, but he was too lazy to ponder it; after all, he would find out sooner or later. As the silence stretched on, someone had to break it.
It was Good who spoke first. Freyr certainly did not have the courage to look directly into Good's eyes, which shone with a golden brilliance at the bottom of the pupils. Although he had experienced this kind of training many times before, each session had been aimed at improving his physical condition. Yet this time, Good's method of training was shrouded in mystery.
There were no tools here, nor any Protective Gear for training. It was unlike the long runs of the past; they were simply on a vast, barren land. From a distance, the area they occupied appeared to be the most fertile patch of ground. One person sat motionless with an expression of solitude, while the other stood there, at a loss for what to do, even forgetting where to place their hands.
Good crossed his arms over his chest and then casually waved his hand, unexpectedly producing a long knife made of dark bronze that looked incredibly sharp. The blade even bore a fearsome wolf's head. "Come on," he said, "the first thing you need to do is focus your mind and learn to perceive."
Freyr was taken aback; it was the first time he had heard such a concept in training. He exclaimed, "What kind of perception?"
Good gazed up at the sky and replied, "Deep perception. Use your utmost concentration to understand yourself, your surroundings, the mysteries of the universe, and the vitality of the soil."
As he spoke, Good brought his hands together as if gathering a fierce energy that began to coalesce. Gradually, cracks appeared along the edges of their area. However, Freyr remained oblivious; it seemed as though everything was naturally occurring—a mysterious power beyond ordinary human capability that could cause the earth to fracture.
"That's right," Good continued. "Everyone possesses the ability to awaken such powers, collectively known as Ability Awakening. This will be your next task. However, each person's awakening point is different; mine is anger, while yours requires external stimulation to be effective."
"But before that, ordinary people cannot observe the appearance of Ability with their naked eyes. Therefore, you need to enhance your five senses and forcefully stimulate your sensory abilities to their most sensitive threshold. Although this method sounds simple in theory, it's much harder in practice. Of course, even if your senses reach Ultimate sensitivity, it doesn't guarantee an awakening of Ability; in simpler terms, you need a stimulus—this can be something good or something bad."
"In short, it's not something you can just decide to do. Just because you might awaken your Ability within a week doesn't mean you can actually achieve it in that time frame. Even with my training methods added in, it still falls short. Those who lack sufficient talent may never awaken their Ability at all. In other words, hunters who cannot awaken their Ability are quite common in the association; they cannot complete tasks above B-Class because such missions are nearly impossible for hunters of that level."
After demonstrating this concept, Good returned to his previous state of daze as if he had no interest in being involved in this war at all.
The first step was perception. When it came to perception, Freyr felt he should start from within himself. He crossed his legs and placed his hands on his knees, carefully regulating the breath flowing through him. Once his breathing became steady and evened out, his mood gradually calmed down.
Understanding oneself was undoubtedly effective; initial concentration yielded significant results. He could feel the energy within him forming an ecological cycle as it flowed freely from various Targets like his spleen and others, continuously creating a loop.
But after a long time, he felt that his concentration was gradually dissipating, to the point where observing himself was too exhausting. The most affected was the sound of the wind; when the southeast wind blew, it had a gentle force that seemed to lift him up. However, when the northwest wind blew, it felt particularly powerful, as if it were opposing Freyr, capable of knocking him down completely. He had to exert a great deal of effort to struggle against the wind, and during these moments, his concentration slowly dwindled.
Struggling against the wind made his concentration seem trivial. The strong northwest wind did not blow all the time, and he needed to take some time to adjust his energy. He had to prepare for the counteracting gale in advance, but who could predict when such a gale would arrive? Making emergency preparations was not easy; after all, a person's concentration has its limits.
Five minutes later, he took a deep breath and exhaled heavily. At that moment, the counteracting gale blew fiercely, and his clear sensory perception suddenly vanished. The first lesson of sensory ability focused on self-awareness, then environmental awareness, and finally on understanding the mysteries of the universe.
Sensory perception was an entry-level skill, but he did not expect it to be so difficult. Seeing Freyr try multiple times without success made Good sigh inwardly. He thought to himself, "Foolish child, I overestimated him. A week has passed, and with this level of failure, if he gets discouraged now, he might set a record for the slowest awakening of ability. There’s even a chance he might never awaken his ability at all; his concentration is too poor for a hunter profession."
"Take your time to comprehend; observing the direction of the wind requires timing. Just this reminder is enough. I'm not good at reminding others, but for you, I'll make an exception. Is it true that all you see is yourself? If you can't even notice this, then you really are a fool."
Although Good said this, he secretly hoped that Freyr wouldn’t give up so easily. After hearing those words from Good, Freyr felt a shiver run through him. Although Good had a way to elevate his sensory awareness to a sensitive threshold instantly, that kind of realization ultimately came from external forces.
For Ability Awakening, one needed a natural and self-derived understanding; otherwise, even if his sensory abilities were raised to their ultimate level and he could perceive the existence of his ability, without achieving the power that came after Ability Awakening, he would not have reached his goal.
"Haah."
Freyr gasped for breath as he just pulled himself back from failure. After hearing Good express disagreement with his approach, he felt some resistance in his thoughts. However, he was no longer just a young adult in his twenties; with maturity came discernment about whether this was helping him or working against him.
On the contrary, Good's reminder was urging him to change his method. Instead of stubbornly walking into a dead end without finding a solution, it would be wiser to change his perspective to solve the problem.
His eyes suddenly became clear and bright as he lifted his head abruptly and slapped his cheeks awake. "Alright, let's try again!"
