After the training exercise, Freyr shed his military identity.
It wasn't until he had rested for over a month in the Inner World, recuperating from physical exhaustion and the negative aftereffects brought on by the Gene Chain, that he returned to the surface to live a remarkably leisurely life. The construction work at the Hunter Association had reached a milestone, and just before leaving the Earth's core, he received the Invitation Letter for the Hunter Assessment.
During his period of recuperation, he gathered quite a bit of firsthand information about the Hunter Assessment through Dute's big mouth. Although he had reconciled with Dute and those ambushers, he wasn't foolish enough to believe everything they said. After finishing his recovery, his first task was to return home for a few days.
Since suffering a devastating defeat, there had been no news from the Crimson Dragon Army. Duan Shuai and others had called him several times during his recovery to persuade him to return to the unit. Freyr's thought was not to outright refuse immediately; after all, if he were to go back, it wouldn't be something he could decide on his own.
As for the other units that had also faced defeat, they returned to their posts without incident. Meanwhile, other cities in the inland areas began planning for recovery and expansion. It wouldn't be long before they would expand into territories occupied by the Zerg. With an increase in population, there would first be a need for more food, land, and supportive policies to ensure stable survival.
Freyr sat in a restaurant, ordered a bowl of Fried Noodles, and while eating, waited for some time. He watched the hurried passersby outside the window and thought to himself how long this tranquility could last. Having experienced such days before, he knew that after a while, things would likely become uncomfortable again. The most probable scenario was that awareness of the larger situation needed to evolve; one couldn't rely solely on defensive measures for security.
After some time had passed, Freyr's transformation had become so significant that it was almost unrecognizable. Confronting his family's butler and Relock among others searching for him took quite a while until they finally noticed a young man sitting in the restaurant who bore some resemblance to them. He waved at them, and only then did they realize that knowing ordinary people who had been tamed within the unit could indeed change one's character dramatically.
Having not seen each other for a while, the butler compared photos with reality. Relock bowed slightly and said, "Young Master, Miss sent me to bring you home."
His family had nearly suffered persecution from the Zerg; their old butler had been killed by primal insects during that chaos. Therefore, it was likely that the new butler still struggled to recognize him. The photo was taken during his university days; now having endured the brutal training of the unit under the scorching sun, his body had become much stronger, with bronze muscles that resonated with passersby.
Freyr smiled slightly and extended his hand toward the new butler. "No need for such formality; we are family."
The butler smiled back, and after they shook hands, they were soon surrounded by a group of people as they got into a private car.
The car hadn't driven long when they arrived at his home—a place he hadn't returned to in quite some time.
The security measures here have become more solid than before he left. It seems that even after his departure, the Lei Family father and son gradually built this place up. The dormitory is at the back, while the outer area serves as a basic defensive stronghold. Before entering, one must undergo a health check; if someone were to bring in pathogens, the detection machines would clearly identify them.
Upon returning home, he was first greeted by the servants, followed by the butler who brought his wife, Su Qian, downstairs to meet him. Su Qian was dressed elegantly like a socialite, cradling a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes. The infant stared wide-eyed at this unfamiliar man who shared their bloodline and suddenly burst into loud cries.
Freyr rubbed his forehead and forced a smile, saying, "Oh dear, has it been so long? The last time I saw you, you were still in your mother's womb. Having given birth to our second child must have been tough on you. It's normal for the baby not to recognize me, right? Hahaha, I truly am a failed father."
"Fortunately, when the baby was born, I sent you a letter urging you to name him quickly. By the time you replied, Daylily had already wilted. Although you did respond, the registration deadline was only fifteen days. I went ahead and registered a name I chose; if you're unhappy with it later, we can always change it," Su Qian said as she led Freyr into the living room and brewed him a cup of tea. Her face radiated happiness as she spoke.
The woman remained enveloped in her blissful silence while the servants bustled about in the living room. Some maids huddled together in whispers, discussing, "So this is Sister's husband? He looks so bright and cheerful! If I were his wife, I'd be the happiest person alive."
"Yeah, happy indeed! Just don't drool on my clothes."
An elderly woman leaned against the wall with her arms crossed, exuding wisdom from her life experiences. She analyzed and explained, "Indeed, nowadays men are disappointing. The key is to find a man who is brave and hardworking; that’s how a woman can trust and rely on him. Otherwise, what are we women here for? Isn’t it to ensure our children have household registrations and enough food to eat? These are basic necessities. So if you meet someone suitable, just marry him quickly."
Listening to these remarks created an unusual atmosphere. Fortunately, Su Qian had poor hearing; Freyr was adept at picking up on subtle hints and felt that it might be better for him to visit less often in the future.
Freyr awkwardly chuckled twice and then took the baby into his arms. "It doesn’t matter what name you choose for the child; as long as he grows up healthy, that's all that matters."
"Oh? Is that so? Are you not afraid if he takes my surname?"
Su Qian smiled mysteriously, causing Freyr to feel nervous this time. Although he usually acted casually, he held onto traditional values that dictated a son should carry his father's surname. No matter what sacrifices he made in life, he wanted others to understand the significance of his surname and its lasting impact on their child.
Seeing Freyr hesitate slightly with a stiff expression made her chuckle again. "I’m just teasing you; the child will still carry your family name. However, I added my family name at the end of his name—Menech—so that he won’t forget his mother while also carrying part of his father's legacy. This way, our child can grow up healthy with both of our wishes."
"Uh, you scared me! What's that child's name? It's Mi. The full name is a bit of a mouthful, Anigosumimenek. Isn't it a cute name? The surnames at the beginning and end are from our two families, and the 'Su' in the middle is the name my family has changed to, while 'Mi' is just the given name."
Freyr glanced at his wife beside him and let out an awkward chuckle. "It's a nice name," he said, though he actually thought it was quite strange. He held back his true feelings, likely out of fear of his wife's reaction. Instead, he adjusted his expression to ease the tension and laughed again to reassure his suspicious wife.
