Gazing at the starry sky with a dazed expression, he wrestled with his thoughts for a long time.
He asked himself questions, as if two versions of himself were trying to break through the other.
"What is your great cause?"
"My great cause is to eat enough to survive. What about you? My great cause is simply to relieve the pressure on my family. I've endured until now for this cause."
"Heh heh heh, newcomer, you really don't understand anything. Eating enough for your family is considered a great cause?"
"Then what is your great cause?"
"It is to dedicate my life for love, to sacrifice myself for the greater good. In the face of righteousness and morality, eating is nothing but trivial. A man should passionately devote his youth and entrust his back to trustworthy companions. That is the great cause. Only children care about eating; if you want to do something, you must be determined to become such a iron-blooded man."
"But even an iron-blooded man gets hungry. If that happens, I won't have the strength. How can I give up my own needs for the sake of a greater good?"
"Ugh, my head hurts a bit. Fool, it's because of you. It's up to you whether you're willing to try. If you can forget about eating and remove the heavy burden from your heart, then by taking that pill, you'll understand what I mean."
"I still need to imagine whether it's worth it."
"Ugh, please, I'm done with you. Can you not be so disgusting? You're not some snot-nosed brat who can't even wear pants. You can't live forever in your parents' shadow. If the Zerg were to breach the shelter right now, do you think with your current abilities you could protect those you love?"
"Who are you calling a snot-nosed brat? Fine, fine, you're right. It's me who doesn't want to let go of these things and think seriously about my future path. But I'm just a commoner with no future; the future is in the hands of the powerful. That's a privilege enjoyed by citizens. My family has been lowly commoners for generations; those citizens even control our future outcomes."
"Hahaha, brother, you've hit the nail on the head! That's exactly what you're thinking inside. So conquer it! Let all those moralities and etiquette go to hell! Just focus on being yourself; that's your duty. When necessary, I can come out and help you—after all, we are brothers."
"Brother... well, let's forget it. I can compromise; just continue strategizing for me."
Inner turmoil surged within him, yet Relock opened his eyes in confusion and suddenly said,
"As long as I eat this, I can gain power, follow the greater good, do what I want to do, and protect the family I trust, right?"
Freyr's eyes widened in surprise; he had been waiting with growing impatience, nearly falling asleep, and wore a skeptical expression.
"This is your idea of the greater good? Just follow him, and you can't go wrong!"
Relock smiled, his gaze sharp and his face reflecting a moment of realization.
"Then I've made my decision. I want to become a Gene-Enhanced Human, to protect what I wish to safeguard. This is my home, and I will guard everything here. This is my greater good. I am willing to entrust my back to you, partner."
Freyr found it hard to believe. After hearing those words, a warm feeling began to rise in his chest. He sniffed, sensing a hint of moisture forming in his eyes, nearly moved to tears.
A man does not shed tears lightly; he wiped his eyes and nodded slightly before turning to hand the blue meat chunk back to Relock, which he had placed in a water bottle.
"Is it okay to eat it raw?"
Relock took the water bottle without caring whose lips had touched the opening and tilted it back to pour the blue meat into his mouth.
He began to chew thoughtfully on the meat chunk before swallowing it. As time passed, Relock's face grew increasingly pale. His hands gripped his throat tightly as his tongue curled outwards.
Suddenly, a wisp of black mist surged from the artery in his wrist. Observant eyes would notice that this black mist flowed with the blood throughout his body, even reaching his organs and warming back up to his brain.
"I feel like I'm going to die. Is this poison I'm eating?"
Relock dared not make too much noise; he clutched the ground tightly, his nails digging painfully into the surface. The result of his restraint was an intensifying wave of agony that washed over him until he suddenly vomited blood onto the ground.
Freyr locked eyes with Relock, excitedly patting his shoulder. "No, this is the Gene Pill. Once the modifications are nearly complete, the pain will subside. You just need to endure it a little longer and have faith in yourself. You can do this."
Just as Relock was about to ask for something else, a wave of intense pain surged through him again. This time, it wasn't just blood trickling from the corner of his mouth; blood began to seep from his nose, eyes, and ears as well. The blood was mixed with impurities, and a strange black sweat oozed from the surface of his skin. He felt as if he were enveloped in this black sweat, while the darkness around his eyes began to fade.
However, this terrible condition wouldn't last long.
After about ten minutes, his rapid breathing gradually calmed down. Relock let out a groan, his face smeared with a layer of black sludge, blood streaking from his nose, eyes, and mouth. Black sweat dripped steadily from his smooth skin onto the ground as he lay lazily on the floor, struggling a bit; the hot sweat made his thick clothing feel particularly heavy.
Before long, Relock stood up looking quite relaxed. He shook his fist and revealed an indescribable smile that hinted at surprise. He took a towel and slipped into the bushes beside the courtyard to change into clean clothes. After wiping off the dirt from his body, he emerged.
Once he finished, he walked out from the thicket. The two of them then headed to the car on the other side to sleep. The Maybach was parked in the garage and was only used as a sleeping tool during this special period. After parking it in the courtyard, Freyr cradled the baby in his arms as they climbed into the car, rolled up the windows, turned on the air conditioning, and leaned back to sleep.
In the early morning, a sharp siren suddenly filled the courtyard.
The loud noise jolted everyone awake. When Freyr opened his eyes, he immediately saw a group of police officers staring at him. He quickly rolled down the window and opened the car door to step outside.
At that moment, several Surgeons in protective gear rushed out and scanned him up and down with special testing devices.
"Great news! My baby is fine," Su Qian emerged from among the Surgeons and snatched the baby from Freyr's arms.
"Excuse me, ma'am, we still can't confirm whether he has been infected with any pathogens. We need to test his blood," one Surgeon said as he rolled up his sleeves and retrieved a blood testing device from his medical kit.
"I'm sorry, dear. I know I was wrong," Su Qian said sadly as she was persuaded away by the police.
"Forget it; we're all family here. We'll know the results in just a few minutes. Don't waste too much of my time; have my family come over for blood tests."
The Surgeons were touched by their cooperation. Before long, they awaited the results of the blood tests after analyzing them under a microscope. From what they found, everyone’s health appeared to be good; there were no signs of infection at all.
The police sent away the Surgeon, leaving behind some collected data from the scene. They began gathering information starting with the Brain Eater Mosquito, then proceeded to search through the charred ruins for bodies. After clearing the area, the forensic expert present began to dissect the corpses for examination. Everyone in the room had been infected by an unknown pathogen, and their bodies exhibited unprecedented mutations.
As for the bodies of the Zerg, they had been reduced to blackened remains, making it impossible to identify the culprit.
However, this incident left a shadow in everyone's hearts.
Thus, when Freyr started looking for a new place to stay, he was fortunate that his family arranged for him to buy a new residence in the same city.
Although it was not as grand as the Mountain Villa, his family had arranged a comfortable living space and even sent a new batch of bodyguards. Most of the previous bodyguards had been dismissed. Freyr asked Relock to quit his job and accompany him to school. Relock's father, who was also the head of security, agreed to his request.
At the school office.
Gatfrens sat on a leather sofa, observing two adorable new students in front of him. He glanced at the documents in his hand and then looked at a well-featured young man across from him. Unable to hide his troubled expression, he hesitated for a moment but finally said firmly, "I've arranged everything for you over there. I'll handle your enrollment today."
Relock took a deep breath and said, "I haven't attended high school; I only graduated from middle school. Are you really willing to accept me?"
Gatfrens smiled slightly, crossing his arms casually. "In this world, there is no such thing as getting something for nothing. Whether you've attended high school or not, learning is an endless sea that requires hard work. What I want from you is your spirit of learning. Even if you're thirty or forty years old, as long as you're willing to learn, our teachers will be happy to invest time in you. Besides, I like some qualities about you. Alright, I'll make an exception for you. Study hard."
Relock touched his forehead and realized, "Oh, thank you, Principal. I'm so moved."
"Alright, your classes are about to start; go on now before you're late." Gatfrens tossed a stack of documents onto the table in front of them and casually opened a bottle of wine, drinking it without restraint in front of the students. Freyr stood up at once while Relock glanced at him and quickly followed suit.
"Principal, I'm leaving," Freyr said.
Gatfrens turned away and waved his hand dismissively.
"I'm leaving too," Relock echoed.
Gatfrens nodded silently.
As they walked out of the office, Relock was stunned, clutching his student ID, and said, "I will definitely make a name for myself."
"Relock, you should go to class first. I'm in the undergraduate department, and you're in the vocational department. We'll only have time to meet during meals from now on. You should focus on training your body here. When you return, I will teach you the methods of cultivation to help you find a way to unlock your Gene Chain sooner," Freyr said without interrupting him. He took a few steps forward but then quickly turned back, unable to resist giving him a heartfelt reminder.
Relock looked up at Freyr and replied, "Okay, I understand. I will go to class by myself. Young Master, please don't worry about me, take care."
Freyr shook his head helplessly and glanced at his watch.
Without saying another word, he left Relock's sight.
Cambrian Hall!
Upon entering Cambrian Hall, Freyr changed into his team uniform and headed to the gym. As he stepped inside, dozens of eyes were fixed on him as he walked through the door. Freyr froze in place; everyone in the gym was wearing team uniforms, and unfriendly expressions filled their faces.
"Manager!" shouted a man with an Afro, his eyes wide open. "A delivery guy has come! He's one of our die-hard fans and is even wearing a replica jersey from our Ice Dust Team. Come look!" The room erupted in laughter.
"Who is it? What delivery guy?" At that moment, a voice came from behind him. Freyr turned around in surprise to see a girl with wet hair standing there. Something felt off; he noticed a hint of moisture trickling from her nose. The girl wore minimal clothing, having just showered, and there was still a scent of hormones lingering around her. This manager seemed completely unconcerned about being in a gym full of men as she calmly stood there with her thighs and arms exposed.
