A thunderous roar echoed from afar, the sound of alien weaponry from the Other Races. The shells of these weapons were as hard as iron, and the low hum of the Other Races sounded like static from a radio transmission. Through the helmet's radio, it seemed possible to hear their mocking laughter, stirring a deep sense of despair.
Freyr peered through the gaps in his helmet, gazing into the distance where a vast expanse of silver stretched endlessly before him.
Before him were various exoskeletal biological weapons from distant star systems. In biological terminology, they were related to insects. Compared to the weak Zerg on Earth, the exoskeletons of these creatures were particularly tough, rivaling metal.
Two hundred years ago, a sudden event tore open a black rift above the capital. The first wave of these creatures surged forth from this rift towards Earth. When the first batch of Zerg occupied Earth, the planet's climate abruptly warmed. Over the past few years, various insects on Earth had shown signs of evolution.
The size of insects gradually increased, and with it, intelligent forms of the Zerg emerged. The Human Government activated nuclear doomsday measures in a desperate attempt to turn the tide. However, instead of exterminating these insects, the arrival of nuclear weapons allowed some to absorb radiation, causing their genetic chains to mutate and expand. Some grew close to human size while others reached several stories tall; some even became fire-breathing monstrosities, leaving destruction in their wake.
Not long after the nuclear apocalypse began, most human civilizations fell into ruin. To preserve the remnants of human civilization, engineers built protective walls. Since then, various shelters named Noah emerged across Earth, symbolizing Noah's Ark from the Bible that carried the sacred flame. Humanity came to believe that Noah's Sanctuary was God's promised refuge.
The sanctuary spanned thousands of miles inland. Originally home to only a few thousand humans, it had sustained three generations and began showing signs of revival.
However, misfortune struck suddenly.
At this moment, a vast swarm of Sicklehook Jumping Bugs appeared before Noah's Sanctuary. Clad in dark armor with two black blades resembling a warrior's arms, they posed a significant threat as they swept away the first line of defense—the light prism towers. After the nuclear apocalypse, human technology had rapidly advanced; lasers could now be remotely controlled and provided an impenetrable defense around the sanctuary.
Suddenly, the ground shook violently as a massive beetle emerged from below—its leathery skin ablaze and its size several times that of a Sicklehook Jumping Bug. This beetle was originally known as a Rhinoceros Beetle on Earth but had undergone hundreds of generations of mutations.
After surviving for fifty years as a Black Armored Bug, its skin changed from black to blazing red. The evolution of Blazing Beetles was exceedingly rare; among the Zerg, most had lifespans measured in mere days. Some possessed wings and could reach lengths nearing one hundred meters at birth, exhibiting astonishing destructive power—but their lifespan was only one week.
The reproductive capacity of the Zerg was remarkable; among them, only the Black Armored Bugs lived longest. A Blazing Beetle that had grown for fifty years retained its strength undiminished. Many biologists refused to believe that Black Armored Bugs could live for fifty years despite data indicating that every ten years marked a transformation period for the Zerg —a phase commonly referred to as molting.
After five phases—each lasting ten years—completing a full molting cycle would result in an exoskeleton transforming into a complete blazing hue. The back of a Blazing Beetle featured two gentle grooves with two prominent black stripes extending down to its soft underbelly.
The blazing horned beetle radiated immense power as it let out a sharp roar; its horn glowed faintly while spiral patterns coursed along its body. With one devastating charge, it pierced through Noah's Sanctuary's defenses, shattering the inner concrete layers.
A gaping chasm appeared within the sanctuary as swarms of insects descended upon living humans, quickly overwhelming desperate civilians with horrific screams echoing throughout. The lines inside and outside the sanctuary collapsed chaotically; soldiers above were cornered by jumping bugs as Sicklehook Jumping Bugs lunged forward—decapitating soldiers in an instant and spraying blood everywhere.
The area of the Defensive Line was filled with a dense swarm of Zerg. They not only reveled in the slaughter but also had a peculiar fondness for the corpses on the ground. Whenever a life was extinguished, these Insectoid beings would immediately pounce on the dismembered bodies, akin to elite surgeons at a Surgical Table. Perhaps the dismembered victims wouldn’t even feel pain, for in the next moment, they would become nameless corpses.
Belonging to the Joint Defense Force's Fourth Division, the firepower deployment points set up around the Division had been utterly destroyed by the insects. The Zerg didn’t even need to employ intelligence; a dozen of them surged forward, blocking the heavy fire points. With their iron bodies, they swiftly severed every line, their sharp claws cutting through with ease, even deforming the ends of large cannons.
At this moment, the troops from Noah's Sanctuary had long since departed. It was clear that they had fallen into a trap this time. Standard heavy fire points and several mechs effortlessly breached the Zerg's barrel-like defenses and charged into their central nest. However, what lay before them was the Heart of Zerg, which had not been mentioned in any intelligence reports; even the Zerg Royal Guard ’s Mother Empress was nowhere to be seen.
Just as many mech pilots hesitated, an urgent message suddenly came through their communication devices.
When Freyr heard the message emanating from his Pager, he exclaimed in alarm, “Not good! We’ve been deceived; we need to retreat!”
Without hesitation, numerous mechs turned around and sped back toward Base Camp.
This was an elite human Mecha Unit, with five-meter-wide bodies, each mech equipped with formidable capabilities. The mechs were divided into three main types: attack mechs, defense mechs, and speed mechs.
The pilots of these mechs were top-tier soldiers within the army—Gene Warriors cultivated during the apocalyptic era. They carried unique genetic energy within them, and due to mutations in their Gene Chains, their physical attributes were several times superior to those of ordinary humans.
Freyr served as the battlefield Commander of this Mecha Corps. Before launching an attack on the insect nest, he had never commanded any experienced unit. He breathed heavily in his specially designed armor, which featured dual wings on its back. This was known as Battle Armor—a type of Biological Armor developed by humanity in the post-mecha era.
Freyr soared rapidly through the night sky without any hindrance from atmospheric resistance. His armor and abilities had reached an extraordinary level of synergy. Many who knew him referred to him as Yata no Kagami. The term Yata no Kagami originated from a legend in a distant island nation; his armor was said to be forged from freshwater that once nourished its lands.
His helmet was equipped with a communication device that projected a holographic three-dimensional image onto a visor that pulled down over his face. At that moment, it displayed a swirling 3D diagram. If he were fortunate enough to continue observing it, he would see that this diagram adjusted continuously based on incoming data.
“Speed is about to break the Sonic Barrier.”
“I understand, Noah; real-time monitoring!”
“Deviation detected—verify and eliminate deviations!”
The figure beneath the Battle Armor was about to break through the Sonic Barrier, and beyond that barrier lay an incredibly silent realm. Suddenly, a synthesized mechanical voice echoed within the Battle Armor, "Your life signs are beginning to decline. Administering Biological Hormone injection, 1!"
Dozens of sharp spikes shot out, forcefully injecting into the arteries. A dark green liquid surged through the veins, quickly merging with the blood inside. Suddenly, a glimmer of light appeared in his dazed eyes, and he could hear the howling of the wind.
"Life signs restored. Life signs restored."
"Alright, Noah, next time you inject the Biological Hormone, give me a heads-up beforehand. You always choose the worst timing," Freyr mumbled.
A string of numbers appeared on the virtual screen of his helmet, indicating their speed as they approached the Sonic Barrier. This realm represented humanity's ultimate achievement, and he was hailed as a hero known for his incredible speed.
Freyr blinked as a downward spiral rapidly formed on the virtual screen. The three-dimensional propulsion diagram indicated everything was progressing positively, with deviations eliminated. He lifted his gaze ahead and saw a strategic location marked by a fluttering Red Flag right before him.
"In just a few seconds, everyone prepare for wormhole traversal. Let's charge back together!"
Seizing the opportunity, Freyr glanced at the time displayed on the lower end of the virtual screen and muttered calmly to himself.
"Yes, Commander!"
A group of voices from the Pager responded in hoarse tones, echoing in unison with a roar.
Outside in the atmosphere, tens of thousands of kilometers away, wormhole expansion devices and over a dozen satellites were accelerating their operations. A tear in space suddenly appeared, and a purple energy shield rendered the previously tranquil space mysterious.
Above Base Camp, a terrifying gap opened up; this was a form of micro-manipulation remote wormhole transmission technology.
The purple vortex resembled a passageway to another dimension.
A man clad in black armor moved swiftly through the night sky. His motor nerves were sharp; with a rapid burst at zero distance, suddenly, turbulence erupted behind him as his wings unfurled.
The shadow vanished into the wormhole, and the towering five-meter mechs followed suit, disappearing into the silent night sky.
As Freyr traversed downward through the wormhole, a few seconds later, a glimmer of dawn appeared at the other end. However, Freyr sensed that this was not a good omen; a raging inferno surged into the backside of the wormhole. He pressed his hands together, transforming them into a shield, and in an instant, the flames engulfed him. Yet, if someone were to look through the fire, they might catch sight of a dark figure swiftly navigating through, breaking free from the heart of the flames.
The mechs frequently vanished into the night sky, becoming stars scattered across the darkness.
"I’m here!"
On the other side of the wormhole, a shadow broke through Scorching flames, drawing closer. The battlefield was now behind Noah's Sanctuary. Freyr glanced at the situation below and felt an overwhelming rage surge within him. His body began to chain together like a machine; at this moment, he donned the Battle Armor known as Yata no Kagami, which started to tremble intensely.
He slightly turned his back, struggling with two wings that hovered in mid-air, resembling a crouching god of death. Suddenly, many stars appeared behind him as those mechs that had broken through the Sonic Barrier also returned through the wormhole.
Seeing Noah's Sanctuary in such disarray, the mech pilots gasped in anger:
"What the hell! This is intolerable!"
As soon as those words left their lips, numerous mechs raised their standard weapons.
They rapidly descended upon areas densely populated by the Zerg and began to wreak havoc. A burst of light blue Ion Cannon fired out, disintegrating dozens of Scythe Jumping Bugs. Then, this mech transformed into a close-combat killer, swiftly drawing its High-Frequency Sword to slice through an approaching Sicklehook Jumping Bug.
The confronting mechs slaughtered indiscriminately.
Freyr naturally had to deal with another formidable foe; suddenly, a Blazing Beetle appeared before him. The flames it spewed forth were unlike anything he had faced before; whether in direct confrontation or in sheer power compared to those weaker insects, it was distinctly different.
Freyr immediately understood that this creature was the overlord among these beetles. In terms of human military ranks, it would at least be considered a leading commander who had survived for over fifty years. The coloration on its back set it apart from others of its kind; fortunately, Blazing Beetles were not particularly numerous.
The Blazing Beetle paused for a moment after crushing a heavily armored mech; the superalloy metal felt as fragile as paper against its massive Giant Horn. In just two or three strikes, the cockpit was destroyed, and the pilot was dragged out by a Sicklehook Jumping Bug nearby—torn apart on the spot.
The Blazing Beetle frantically searched for its opponent, roaring as it spewed forth raging flames. The sturdy Metal Cannon quickly softened and melted under the heat. In the sky, a giant Dragonwing Insect hovered, a member of the Zerg that resembled humanity's Air Force. Its combat power was Astonishing, yet it had a glaring weakness that contrasted sharply with its appearance. Several heavily armed mechs formed an oval line to contain the Dragonwing Insect, their Plasma Cannons trembling as they aimed.
After several minutes, the dragonfly-like creature was blasted by the Plasma Cannon, its limbs reduced to a pulp as it flew far away, crashing heavily into the open jungle.
The Blazing Beetle targeted the sky and unleashed scorching flames, causing several mechs to retreat quickly. The Plasma Cannon began to charge again.
The charging time for the Plasma Cannon was relatively long, so it had to accumulate firepower well before the battle began. When the critical moment arrived, the Plasma Cannon could release powerful destructive ion beams without needing to charge energy.
The figure of Yata no Kagami stood in front of the mech squad, arms integrated into a shield. Freyr responded through his Pager: "Clear out the other trapped individuals; leave the rest of the bugs to you all. This one is mine to deal with."
The other mechs wobbled and dispersed. Freyr appeared to be the oldest among them, a seasoned Gene Warrior. In his younger years, he had been an Ace Mecha Master. The compatibility requirements of the Yata no Kagami Combat Armor with the Gene Chain were high, making it difficult for many to pilot the Battle Armor.
For over twenty years, he had worked in a protective shelter, living in this world dominated by the Zerg. It was truly unfortunate; in his quest to eliminate global disasters, he had nearly given up on retirement. Over these years, he had become a battlefield Commander, marking every conflict he led with significant victories.
Shaking his head slightly, Freyr hesitated for a moment. Unlike others, he slowly descended above the Blazing Beetle, uttering a simple phrase from his lips.
"Now I will be your opponent!"
Upon hearing his voice, the Blazing Beetle turned its head and saw nothing more than a middle-aged man about his size. Enraged, it let out an uncontrollable roar. Atop its head, a thickened Giant Horn emitted a powerful spiral of Airflow, sweeping through the air. The Blazing Beetle was confident in its abilities; after all, it had used this horn to breach the defenses of Noah's Sanctuary, slicing through like cutting vegetables without any resistance.
Freyr focused intently and separated his hands. His left arm wrapped around his back and pulled out a beautifully engraved black blade known as a High-Vibration Particle Cutter.
Upon closer inspection, this two-foot-long black blade resembled a grim reaper's scythe.
"Budou from Feather Slash!"
For Freyr, this technique was all too familiar; countless heavyweight members of the Zerg had fallen beneath its edge.
He raised the Black Iron Heavy Explosive Blade, and his figure quickly blurred, a shadow darting forward at high speed.
He brushed past the Giant Horn; anyone with a bit of sense wouldn't collide with such a deadly weapon. Even at his current biological level, a direct hit might not kill him, but the injuries would be severe—he wasn't foolish enough to take that risk.
With immense force, the long blade struck down, freezing his figure for an instant before slicing into the hard shell on the back of the beetle. A loud clang echoed as metal met metal, causing a slight pain in his hands. On the crimson Exoskeleton, only a white mark remained.
Freyr quickly leaped back, the recoil so strong that he couldn't help but cough violently.
The Blazing Beetle raised its mouth, releasing a foul breath that carried the scent of sulfur. The flames it emitted were dark red, with temperatures soaring close to two thousand degrees Celsius.
This high temperature could melt any metal. Although the refining process was beyond common knowledge, he certainly wouldn’t underestimate this extraordinary flame.
He hurriedly retreated, jumping into the air and weaving back and forth.
Freyr cursed under his breath, gripping the heavy explosive blade tightly as blood mist swirled in his pupils. "Bone Removal!"
For Freyr, his current speed was still far from reaching the Sonic Barrier; as long as he didn't reach that threshold, he wouldn't experience any discomfort.
On the contrary, he had already mastered controlling speeds that would terrify ordinary people—the Ultimate speed.
“Just watch me tear apart your Exoskeleton! You’ll need another ten years to beat me!”
Freyr swiftly descended but did not stop moving. He continued to dart around at high speed while expertly wielding his blade. Glimmers of light flashed around the Blazing Beetle.
The Blazing Beetle struggled to adapt, and within seconds, its vibrant Subcutaneous Tissue was exposed to the air. Such perfect knife skills! The thick red Exoskeleton began to fall away in pieces.
"Hehehe, goodbye!"
Freyr came to a sudden halt, hovering in front of the Blazing Beetle. He held a long knife that emanated a slight chill, its terrifying killing intent clinging to it. In a flash of dark light, he struck with incredible speed, and in an instant, the body of the Blazing Beetle was cleaved in two.
"Die, you bastard! Now you know my strength, huh? It's about time I found a truly formidable opponent to spar with!"
As soon as he finished speaking, a scream echoed from the communication device. Turning to look behind him, he saw a massive flesh-like sphere standing over a kilometer away in front of the shelter, with a humanoid figure towering above it. The sight was horrifying; in all his years of combat experience, he had never encountered such a monster. Despite his undefeated record in battle, a hint of melancholy surfaced in his heart.
Yet even so, he could see that the area around the flesh sphere was ablaze with artillery fire. The Plasma Beam Cannon and Nuclear Reaction Split Sky Cannon were firing relentlessly, along with ineffective armor-piercing rounds that seemed to strike against an intangible barrier.
The pilots were cursing angrily, trying to maintain at least some semblance of dignity. How could they not kill it or even struggle against it? Just this alone was enough to drain their energy reserves.
"Damn it! We can't hit him!"
"We've tried concentrating our fire; it had no effect."
"Our energy is almost depleted; we won't make it back to headquarters in time."
"Let me handle this! You cover me while I break through his defenses. We'll unleash all remaining energy at once."
Seeing such a formidable creature, Freyr laughed heartily three times; this was just what he needed.
As soon as he finished speaking, Freyr shot toward the creature at high speed. For him, a kilometer was nothing more than a flick of his fingers. The Yata no Kagami Combat Armor was incredibly effective. In no time at all, he reached his destination and looked up in astonishment. The sight before him was overwhelming; the folds of the flesh sphere glowed with an eerie green light.
