In the Hao Tian Realm, under the Rectangular Array, over eight hundred cultivators were tense, filled with hope for their future.
The first and second individuals to make their choices received precious Low-Level Dao Artifacts and powerful Demon Beast Cores that could be fused. Soon, the third cultivator made a choice, but instead of following the order of the first two, he jumped directly to a square in the middle.
"I choose square number five thousand five hundred," said a Young Cultivator, hesitating for a moment before making a firm decision.
Ding!
With a light sound, square number five thousand five hundred opened, but strangely, there was nothing inside; it was an empty square.
The Young Cultivator waited for a long time but did not see the expected treasure fly out from the square.
A murmur of disappointment spread among the crowd.
"If you choose in order, you’re bound to find something good. Why jump around? And to jump all the way to five thousand five hundred! The good stuff is all at the front. Who has the time to fill up all ten thousand squares?" one cultivator expressed his opinion.
"Exactly! The next choice should be the third square; surely something good will come out. Perhaps the next one will be a Haotian Pill. With over eight hundred of us, if we finish choosing and there’s no Haotian Pill, we might get another chance to choose. After all, the Haotian Immortal placed the Haotian Pill in the Rectangular Array so that talented individuals could obtain it; they wouldn’t let us leave empty-handed," another Green-Clad Cultivator shared his thoughts.
"What you say makes sense. So why don’t you choose the third one yourself? Or are you worried about things not going well three times in a row?" asked a Blue-Robed Monk beside the Green-Clad Cultivator.
The Green-Clad Cultivator felt somewhat embarrassed and stammered, "I... I’m just leaving the opportunity for others."
"I'll go! I choose the third one!" shouted a Young Cultivator, making his third choice. All eyes turned to him, most showing admiration because of an old saying: if the first two choices yielded good items, generally speaking, the third would not have anything worthwhile.
Ding!
A soft sound echoed as the Number Three Grid opened, revealing a dazzling light within. A multicolored lotus flower flew out, causing everyone to gasp in astonishment.
"It’s the Holy Medicine, the Multicolored Sacred Lotus! This is a true Holy Medicine that can bring the dead back to life and restore flesh to bones. For cultivators, consuming it not only enhances their cultivation but also prolongs their lifespan, potentially adding a hundred years! If offered to the sect leader or a living ancestor, one would surely gain the status of a True Disciple and rise above others," an experienced cultivator exclaimed, identifying the treasure that had emerged from the Number Three Grid.
Even Zhao Yang's eyes sparkled as he watched the Multicolored Sacred Lotus fly into the hands of a young man. He felt a pang of regret; such a precious item was wasted on someone else. If he weren’t physically restrained, he would have rushed over to snatch it and consume it himself!
Despite these thoughts, Zhao Yang's concerns grew stronger. The first three items were increasingly impressive, all reaching the level of Holy Medicine. Holy Medicines were true Heavenly Materials and Earthly Treasures, far more valuable than the Yuan Yang Fruit or even the Earth Spirit Spring. The temptation to make a choice was overwhelming.
"The Haotian Immortal is truly generous, leaving us with such treasures," one cultivator shouted.
"Junior Brother, I’m choosing the Fourth Square!" At that moment, Song Baliang transmitted his thoughts to Zhao Yang, equally excited about selecting the Fourth Square.
"Wait! Don’t make a choice just yet; something feels off," Zhao Yang cautioned, urging Song Baliang to hold back.
Song Baliang felt puzzled by Zhao Yang's words. However, with each item in the first three squares being more enticing than the last—especially since the third was already at the Holy Medicine level—he couldn’t help but wonder if the fourth contained a Supreme Dao Artifact or even a legendary divine medicine that appeared once in a millennium in the cultivation world.
"I choose the Fourth Square!" In an instant, many cultivators shouted their choices almost simultaneously, driven by envy for what lay in the first three squares.
But it was the Green-Clad Cultivator who had spoken earlier who made his choice first. A faint white light connected him to the Fourth Square, marking him as its initial chooser.
Ding!
With a soft chime, the Fourth Square opened. A beam of extreme light flashed by, and everyone felt their vision blur. Then came a horrific scream as the Green-Clad Cultivator fell lifelessly to the ground, his head pierced by the beam of light, leaving behind a gruesome sight.
A chill swept through the crowd, and many cultivators who had been lost in their hopeful wishes suddenly awoke, staring in terror at the corpse of the Green-Clad Cultivator, unable to speak.
"How could this happen? How could a cultivator be killed outright!" one shouted. "The attack left by the immortal is simply undefendable; no matter how powerful one is, if they make the wrong choice, they will surely fall to such an attack."
Song Baliang cast a grateful glance at Zhao Yang. If it weren't for Zhao Yang's warning not to choose, he might have been the one lying dead here.
"Opportunities are inherently filled with uncertainty. Since there are heavenly fortunes to be gained, there will naturally be dangers that lead to death," another cultivator remarked.
"I choose the fifth square!" As soon as he finished speaking, a Purple-Clad Monk made his selection. "How could there be consecutive deaths after someone just died?" the Purple-Clad Monk said confidently.
Ding!
With a light sound, the fifth square opened. A beam of light shot forth at an incredible speed toward the Purple-Clad Monk. His expression turned to one of horror as he desperately activated his True Qi for defense, conjuring a radiant shield in his hands. However, his defense failed to withstand even a fraction of the beam; the shield shattered, and the Purple-Clad Monk fell to the ground, a gaping hole appearing in his chest as he screamed in agony. In no time, he bled out and died.
The crowd erupted in disbelief at this outcome—another direct kill of a chooser?
"I choose the sixth square! I refuse to believe that Haotian Immortal would slay us!" another cultivator declared.
The others looked on with mixed expressions, turning their gazes toward the one who had made a choice, waiting to see what would emerge from the sixth square.
Ding! With another light sound, the sixth square opened. The chosen cultivator stood ready, and everyone held their breath. The anticipated beam of light did not appear; instead, nothing emerged from the square at all.
"Hmm?" The crowd was puzzled. Could it be an empty square?
However, a sudden explosion rang out, and the cultivator's body rapidly expanded, bursting into a mist of blood. One cultivator screamed as the blood mist and chunks of flesh splattered onto his face.
"No, I won't choose anymore! Choosing wrong means death! Why should we even choose?" one cultivator shouted. The others, hearing this, also showed signs of hesitation. The Haotian Pill and other treasures were important, but nothing was more crucial than their own lives.
As soon as the words left his mouth, it was as if some mechanism had been triggered. Dozens of Wooden Puppet Beasts suddenly surged in from all directions of the Hao Tian Realm, launching attacks at the cultivators standing at the edges. The cultivators found themselves unable to move, but when the Puppet Beasts approached them, they could still fight back. A few wooden Puppet Beasts posed no challenge to these elite cultivators who had entered the Hao Tian Realm.
However, after those Wooden Puppet Beasts were all eliminated, an original tenfold number surged in from all sides. Some of the attacked cultivators wielded magical treasures and easily dispatched these Puppet Beasts. Soon, this tenfold wave was also completely wiped out.
"Is this the Haotian Immortal's test for us? This is too easy," one cultivator wondered.
But immediately afterward, a hundredfold number of Wooden Puppet Beasts appeared from all directions, among which were several powerful Iron Puppet Beasts. Unsurprisingly, these Puppet Beasts were also completely eradicated.
"Surely there won't be a thousandfold of Puppet Beasts," one cultivator predicted based on what had happened before.
The imagined thousandfold of Puppet Beasts did not appear; instead, a hundredfold of Iron Puppet Beasts emerged, roughly corresponding to one for each person. The Iron Puppet Beasts were equivalent to late-stage Foundation Establishment cultivation; most people had no trouble defeating them, though some less skilled cultivators struggled to take them down.
Next came nearly a hundredfold of Bronze Puppet Beasts. This time, two or three cultivators were killed by the Bronze Puppet Beasts, and a few began to feel overwhelmed.
After the Bronze Puppet Beasts were eliminated, a hundredfold of Silver Puppets surged like a wave. Some cultivators screamed in horror as they fell victim to the Silver Puppets right from the start; these Silver Puppets were not mechanical like the other Puppet Beasts but rather agile and ferociously powerful.
"What is happening? It's an endless wave after wave! At this rate, we'll be completely wiped out in no time!" one cultivator shouted.
