Sun Wukong said, "This Earthly Transformation of Seventy-Two Changes was passed down by my master. There are probably only a few people in the world who can perform all seventy-two transformations, but there is no one else who can master them as perfectly as I do. Among these transformations, the one I am most skilled at is the Endless Transformations' Transformation Technique. The characteristics of the Transformation Technique are that it can change length, size, existence, gender, and age. It can transform oneself and others. What I want to teach you is the Super Divine Technique that stems from this Transformation Technique—Transforming into a Sheep."
Upon hearing this, Zhao Yang immediately felt deflated and sighed, "Oh dear, after all this time, you’re teaching me this technique to turn into a sheep? I’d rather learn how to turn into a pigeon or a rabbit; at least then I could wear a black hat and perform magic tricks on the street."
"What nonsense are you talking about? I am the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Sun Wukong! I’ve created this unparalleled divine technique just for you, and you're still not satisfied? Do you know what this technique of transforming into a sheep is also called?"
"What is it called?" Zhao Yang suddenly became interested.
"It’s also called Transforming into a Sheep!"
"Really!" Zhao Yang exclaimed in disbelief.
"However," Sun Wukong continued, "you have to add two words before 'Transforming into a Sheep': Absolute."
"Absolute Sheep Transformation? What’s that?"
"Absolute Sheep Transformation ignores any defenses and level restrictions, directly turning the opponent into a Little Sheep. Depending on one's cultivation level, the duration of being transformed varies. If you target someone of equal or lower cultivation than yourself, not only can you turn them into a sheep, but they can remain in that state for up to seven days. You can also undo the transformation at any time within those seven days. If your cultivation is lower than your target's, even if they are much stronger than you, they will still remain in sheep form for at least three seconds. Those hit by Absolute Sheep Transformation will see their cultivation and defenses significantly weakened; thus, when your enemy is in sheep form, you should take the opportunity to finish them off with one strike."
Zhao Yang was left speechless. "If what my master says is true and it really ignores any cultivation levels, I could just go challenge a boss directly." He swallowed hard and asked, "A strike?"
"Yes, exactly this strike." As he spoke, Sun Wukong unexpectedly pulled out a massive hammer from behind him and presented it to Zhao Yang.
Zhao Yang looked at the hammer that was as tall as he was and nearly dropped his jaw to the ground. He ran his hand along its surface and said, "This hammer is neither gold nor copper; its texture is clear and solid. It can't possibly be made from heavenly iron."
Sun Wukong nodded and replied, "Indeed. My master made it just this morning using stones from this mountain." He pointed toward the mountain behind him.
"I can't believe it!" Zhao Yang exclaimed again in disbelief. "Master, do you dare to be more reliable? The great Great Sage Equal to Heaven gives his disciple this shabby hammer as a treasure? You should know that I will be using your name to make my way through the world!"
Sun Wukong paid him no mind.
"Hmph, one day when your cultivation is high enough, you'll understand the power of this hammer. Besides, with your current level, even if I gave you a treasure weighing thousands or tens of thousands of pounds, could you lift it? Don't be so envious of what others have. From now on, you will practice the basic hammer technique for me, Old Sun. Swing that hammer at least two thousand times every day. If you can't finish, don't even think about going home for dinner."
Zhao Yang felt a mix of emotions, sensing something was off, as if he were being played. Faced with the monkey's sudden seriousness and the threat of being attacked whenever he slacked off, he had no choice but to obediently follow his demands and practice the hammer technique. It felt chaotic and disorganized to him, like he was just flailing around. After swinging the hammer for a while, he sometimes found it hard to stop, often ending up in a clumsy heap.
That night, close to midnight, Zhao Yang finally completed his two thousand swings. As he left, he muttered under his breath, "Damn monkey, you're going to kill me."
No sooner had he spoken than a heart-wrenching scream erupted from him as he clutched his backside and flew over ten yards away. His cry startled all the creatures in the mountains into a panic.
From that day on, the beings of Buddha's Palm Mountain could hear a child's mournful wail echoing through the air every day. Following each scream would come a barrage of curses from the child.
"Damn monkey, stinky monkey..."
"Bima Wen, I'm coming for you!"
"Monkey Head, where do you think you're going?"
"You dare hit me like this? I'm not someone to mess with!"
"Are you a rescue sent by the monkeys?"
"Wukong, stop! Ouch, don't hit me! I won't curse you again!"
"Master, I've always wanted to ask you a question... um, you once said that when you caused havoc in Heaven, you chopped your way from the Southern Heavenly Gate all the way to Penglai East Road without blinking for three days and nights. Didn't your eyes dry out?"
"Wukong! Look at you throwing things around again! I just told you not to toss that staff about. It's a treasure! If you throw it carelessly, you'll pollute the environment. What if it hits a child? Even if it doesn't hit a child, it's wrong to damage the flowers and plants!"
Three years later.
Under the training and torment of Sun Wukong, Zhao Yang had gradually increased his swings of the Stone Hammer from 2,000 to 8,000 times. Both his physical strength and power had surged significantly. When Sun Wukong slapped him, he no longer felt the same pain as before; sometimes he would even feign indifference and call for more, only to beg for mercy when Sun Wukong pulled out his staff.
However, Zhao Yang was puzzled. Despite his efforts over the past three years, he could not absorb Spirit Energy from the environment in large quantities. Particularly when he practiced at home, the amount of Spirit Energy he absorbed was minimal. It was only when he was near his master that the absorption seemed a bit faster, but even then, the speed at which he converted Spirit Energy into True Qi was still slower than when his cultivation had not been crippled. As a result, he remained at the second layer of the Qi Refinement Stage.
Being at the Qi Refinement Stage and under the guidance of the Great Sage Sun Wukong, having only advanced two layers in three years was an incredibly slow pace. Even a cultivator with Five Spiritual Roots would not progress this slowly. Zhao Yang, who had excelled in mathematics in his previous life, often muttered in front of Sun Wukong, "It's been three years, Master. I've only advanced two layers in cultivation. At this rate, it will take me thirteen and a half years to reach perfection in the Qi Refinement Stage. With nine levels of cultivation, that means thirteen point five multiplied by nine... let me calculate... yes, it will take a full one hundred twenty-one and a half years. Master, are you sure I'm your disciple?"
Although according to his calculations, achieving immortality in over a hundred years would place him among the top cultivators in history, he knew that those geniuses often advanced through the early stages of cultivation within months. He had even heard of some prodigies who were born with True Qi foundations equivalent to Foundation Establishment Practitioners—targets coveted by all major sects. Such individuals were destined to become leaders of their sects.
Zhao Yang doubted himself somewhat but did not believe that his master Sun Wukong would allow him to languish in mediocrity within the cultivation world.
Every time Zhao Yang asked about his cultivation speed, Sun Wukong felt uneasy. Over the past three years, he had secretly channeled Divine Power during Zhao Yang's meditation sessions to draw every bit of Chaos True Qi he could from within a hundred miles. Who would have thought that the concentration of Chaos True Qi in Spirit Energy was so low? It took three years just to get Zhao Yang to the second layer of Qi Refinement Stage. Forcing Zhao Yang to focus on Body Refinement was truly a last resort; now Zhao Yang's strength could rival that of ten thousand pounds, and his physical resilience had reached an incredibly powerful level—almost at the limit of what he could endure. Yet advancing further in cultivation seemed as difficult as ascending to heaven.
"If I had consumed the Supreme Golden Elixir back in my day," Sun Wukong thought, "with his current physical strength, he might not be able to ascend directly to immortality but could certainly leap through several realms. Even if this world has strong suppressive forces, he could still cross six major realms to reach Dao Fruit stage. But Taishang Laojun spent thousands of years cultivating just one Supreme Golden Elixir—one that I consumed back then. Now I am nearing five hundred years since my own expiration date; I have only a few days left in this world. If I want this kid to make another breakthrough, I’ll need to find a millennium-old ginseng or other Heavenly Materials and Earthly Treasures. What should I do?"
Meanwhile, Zhao Yang remained blissfully unaware of these challenges, running along like a joyful little deer.
Though he was now fifteen years old, under Sun Wukong's training, his physical limits had expanded significantly; he had transformed from a malnourished appearance into a robust figure. Coupled with Body Refinement cultivation, Zhao Yang's body was nearly free of impurities; his face was clean and looked like that of a handsome young man.
"One thousand five hundred sixty-one... one thousand five hundred sixty-two... one thousand five hundred sixty-three..." As Zhao Yang ran home, he swung the heavy hammer over a thousand five hundred times. "Master said that as long as I persist until I can swing it ten thousand times in one breath, my body will reach perfection. After that, cultivating True Qi will be as easy as ascending clouds! At that point, I’ll be faster than a rocket! Haha! The Chaotic Root truly deserves its title as the number one Spiritual Root in the world!"
