Nine Thunder Tribulation raged across the desolate land, its thunderous wrath overwhelming, and the Demon could not withstand it.
Since ancient times, anyone at the Tribulation Realm with Great Perfection who dared to challenge the might of ascension faced only annihilation, turning to ashes. The only exception was a Mud Buddha from the Nanhai Guanyin Monastery, who resisted death with the Mud Bodhisattva's Form, forming an Ascension Elixir within but ultimately could not escape demise. The rest who ascended to immortality were mere folk tales, with no concrete records.
Now, as the thunder tribulation descended, massive bolts of lightning cascaded down like a torrential waterfall from above. The villagers in Red Maple Valley had already been sent away by me using Time Walk, safely over a hundred miles away. Below, the Sword Elder appeared as insignificant as an ant, his Daoist Robe billowing as he gazed upward, unafraid of the thunder.
"Let's go," Guo Daozhen called out to everyone to evade the tribulation.
It was clear to all that the Nine Thunder Tribulation had locked onto the Sword Elder. To intervene recklessly would only amplify the tribulation's power and lead to needless deaths.
"Grandpa!" Dongfang Yuqing shouted, urging his Five Element Sword towards the Sword Elder.
I reached out and pulled Dongfang Yuqing back to my side, then took him far away.
"Let me go! That's my grandpa!" Dongfang Yuqing yelled.
I replied, "Only you can wield the Five Element Sword. If you rush in, it will distract him and could lead to disaster. I will give the Evil Weapon to him so he can resist the tribulation."
Hesitating at my words, Dongfang Yuqing fell silent. We retreated to a distant spot in the Mountain Valley, where I summoned the Evil Weapon from my Qi Sea and tossed it to the Sword Elder.
"Thank you!" exclaimed the Sword Elder, grasping the Evil Weapon. His combat power surged; although no one had ever withstood a thunder tribulation throughout history, he was still a Supreme. It was impossible for him to surrender without a fight.
With the Evil Weapon in hand, he faced the descending Nine Thunder Tribulation. The sky lit up with brilliance as he held his sword across his chest, his white hair dancing wildly. Trees and mountains within tens of thousands of feet around him were uprooted and flew into the air like a swarm of flying swords converging above his head.
The Ten Thousand Swords Technique, known as the first sword technique of the Sword Pavilion, commanded countless swords to return to their origin, merging man and sword into one. The Sword Elder, having reached the Sword Realm decades ago, could command all things as swords. Now wielding an unparalleled divine weapon like the Evil Weapon, he unleashed the full might of this technique—its power unprecedented throughout history!
However, even after summoning thousands of giant swords formed from mountains and trees into the sky, they barely held off the Nine Thunder Tribulation for a moment before being reduced to dust in its radiant light.
The fingers of the Sword Elder bled as he tore through his own limits. Anguish and fury filled his eyes as boundless Dao Qi radiated from him. His body expanded like a giant, causing fissures to crack open in the ground beneath him.
"With the winds and thunder of all nine provinces in my hands, I shall slay this deity with one sword!" roared the Sword Elder. He raised his Evil Weapon, charging upward to meet the descending storm of lightning.
In an instant, a beam of light pierced through the heart of the Nine Thunder Tribulation. The tribulation was immediately dispersed by his strike; with unparalleled mastery over swordsmanship, he cleaved through the heavens and severed another bolt of lightning. Yet more massive bolts rolled down from above, purple lightning filling the sky as they converged from all directions. The scene of Nine Stars Aligned unfolded before him, transforming into a devastating thunder sword that came crashing down.
The light shone so brightly that it was blinding. Taihe Zhenren and Iron Bull unleashed Righteous Qi, shielding everyone within its embrace.
Boom!
It was as if the world was ending. Thunder roared, and the entire Red Maple Valley was instantly flattened, sending all onlookers flying away, scattered thousands of feet by the force of the lightning tribulation.
A buzzing echoed in their heads, like electricity coursing through their minds. As they climbed to their feet, they gazed at the center of the thunder tribulation in Red Maple Valley, their hearts filled with uncertainty.
The Thundercloud had dissipated, the lightning faded, and the sky cleared. Lightfeathers drifted in all directions, and the overwhelming Spirit Energy returned to nature, dispersing into the air.
At the center of the tribulation, the Evil Weapon emitted a low, mournful hum, seemingly astonished to encounter something that could challenge it for the first time.
"Grandpa!" Dongfang Yuqing cried out, tears streaming down her face as she rushed toward the location of the Evil Weapon.
There lay a massive pit created by the thunder tribulation, still crackling with residual lightning.
"The Nine Thunder Tribulation is truly terrifying; even someone as strong as Supreme has no power to resist?" Guo Daozhen murmured to himself, unable to hide his shock and fear. One step forward could lead to immortality; one step back meant death—this was an unavoidable reality.
However, there are costs to every path; how could mere mortals hope to ascend?
Yunxi furrowed her brow and looked at me, seemingly recalling my own encounter with the thunder tribulation.
In the distance, protected by others, Song Qianqiu also wore a face of horror. It was evident to anyone that the rumors about the Nine Thunder Tribulation being insurmountable for mortals were true. How many extraordinary talents from ancient times had faced this tribulation only to meet their demise? How could anyone from our generation possibly survive it?
"Hmph! To die from a lightning strike—what a pathetic end for the Sword Elder!" A mocking voice came from nearby. It was none other than Yang Xuanzong, the head of the Yang Family.
Dongfang Yuqing glared at Yang Xuanzong with fury. Gripping the Evil Weapon beside her, she swung it down fiercely; light tore through the air as the ground split open. Yang Xuanzong vanished into thin air, narrowly avoiding the destructive force of the Evil Weapon.
Dongfang Yuqing spat out a mouthful of blood and then fainted.
I quickly moved forward to support Dongfang Yuqing and stored the Evil Weapon in my Qi Sea while casting a sidelong glance at Yang Xuanzong.
Yang Xuanzong took a step back in fear at my murderous intent. The Old Scholar remained silent; he had witnessed the entire process of Sword Elder Transcending Tribulation. Afterward, he turned away and left, with Yang Xuanzong following closely behind.
Not far away, Song Qianqiu also left with many Puppets, without engaging us in battle.
Kong Chushi, as the clouds dispersed, a vague memory of my personal experience and insights regarding the Thunder Tribulation surfaced in my mind.
"Thank you, senior," I thought, gazing at the distant Lightfeather, feeling a sense of uncertainty.
As a Supreme and a sword cultivator, Sword Elder had always been one to attack rather than defend. Among the Five Great Supremes, he was undoubtedly the most formidable in terms of offense. Yet even with the power boost from wielding an Evil Weapon, he could only cut through one bolt of lightning. When faced with the second Nine Stars Aligned Thunder Tribulation, he was powerless to resist and was reduced to ashes.
The beast crawled out from my embrace when the Thunder Tribulation appeared. It stood on my shoulder, watching the lightning strike with a look of concern in its eyes.
Previously, when Old Scholar used the Five Thunders technique, the beast could absorb the thunder's power to strengthen itself. Now, confronted with the Nine Thunder Tribulation, it was clearly apprehensive.
"Red Maple Valley has been destroyed. What should we do next?" Huzi asked.
I replied, "My father's courtyard hasn't been destroyed. It should still be livable after some tidying up. It's quiet there. Let's take Dongfang Yuqing there; he exhausted himself using an Evil Weapon and needs to rest."
Everyone nodded and followed me to Jiangnan Courtyard, where we had previously stayed.
Now, the entire Jiangnan had become a dead city, desolate and barren. The residents had already moved away from areas that hadn't been burned by the Seven Star Sword Technique, and after such a long time, no one dared to return.
Yang Sanqian's courtyard had undergone several renovations. We connected our courtyard with that of our neighbors and decided to stay there temporarily.
After settling Dongfang Yuqing, I stepped outside. Huzi said, "Dongfang witnessed Eastern Nine Deaths earlier and now saw Eastern Senior's death; this must be a huge blow to him."
I replied, "Those from Daoist Sect live between life and death. Now both sides have suffered heavy losses. If he can't withstand such blows, then he shouldn't be in Daoist Sect."
"Must cultivation in Daoist Sect always involve life and death?" Huzi asked, somewhat confused.
I said, "That's human nature—survival of the fittest. The Dao suppresses excessive strength; now people from Daoist Sect can easily destroy a city. One Song Qianqiu alone is enough to slaughter an entire region. I am starting to agree with Yu Xuanliang's words."
"Yu Xuanliang's words?" Huzi questioned.
I pointed at the barren ruins of the dead city before us and said, "The former residents lived in peace and prosperity; now this beautiful land has turned into wasteland. Yu Xuanliang believes that Daoist Sect should not exist in this world."
I vanished before Huzi, who looked surprised. As Yunxi approached, he asked, "What does Hao mean?"
Yunxi shook his head and replied, "Let him have some time alone."
A thousand miles away, I appeared on a mountaintop where snow fell heavily, the cold biting into me, leaving a sense of heaviness in my heart.
The snow shifted, and down below, some Yin Soldiers spotted me and charged up the mountain with a howl. Among them were villagers who had turned into Corpse Demons, feasting on each other. Upon seeing me at the summit, they too rushed upward.
"Nine Thunder Tribulation..." I murmured to myself.
In the moment before his soul was shattered, Sword Elder had imparted his understanding of Transcending Tribulation to me. As I recalled his experience in my mind, I realized that if I faced the thunder tribulation myself, I would be even more powerless to resist—like an ant confronting a gathering storm or a straw dog facing the heavens with utter helplessness.
A group of Yin Soldiers reached me. Just as they raised their spears to strike, I vanished from the mountaintop, leaving them to plunge off the cliff.
By the time I returned, it was nearly evening. Dongfang Yuqing had already awakened. He sat on a long bench at the door, staring blankly ahead with an expressionless face.
Guo Daozhen and Wu had gone to a distant town to procure some rice and vegetables. Everyone was busy preparing a fire to cook. Huzi, Iron Bull, and Taihe Zhenren were repairing the house and setting up a few beds.
Members of the Daoist Sect were still mortals; even with their ability to practice fasting techniques, they could only go without food or water for about a month while relying on Dao Qi to sustain their lives.
When Wu and Guo Daozhen returned to the mountain village where Emei Sect was hidden, Wu initially intended to bring Rouer back with him for her protection. He feared for her safety against the Yin Soldiers. Now that Emei had only Bai Xiaoxiang left—a mere Nascent Soul Realm cultivator—there was no way they could withstand an army of Yin Soldiers.
Guo Daozhen's words made Wu abandon the idea of taking Rouer away because being with us posed greater danger. We had gathered together to face an even larger threat; Rouer's low cultivation level meant that if she recklessly got involved, she would be in grave danger at the slightest misstep.
During dinner, Huzi and Douding called out for Dongfang Yuqing several times. Dongfang Yuqing merely shook his head, remaining seated on the bench at the door, his white hair cascading behind him in a desolate manner.
Wudao said, "Why should we care? We eat our food; we can't let one person's death stop everyone else from living."
"Five," I frowned and said.
Dongfang Yuqing's voice came from the doorway: "How could a wild child like you understand the feeling of losing family?"
Wu immediately threw his chopsticks in anger; they pierced through the mud wall and shot toward Dongfang Yuqing.
Dongfang Yuqing pinched the chopsticks with two fingers and said, "You get angry because of someone else's words, and you think of your deceased master and parents you've never met because of their mockery. What right do you have to come at me?"
Wu clenched his fists, his eyes red, swallowing a belly full of words in the end.
Guo Daozhen chuckled and said, "Right now, we're all grasshoppers on the same blade of grass; we need to help each other out. It's not good to lose our composure at this time. We all feel the loss of Eastern Senior, but life goes on. We need to eat, and we must take revenge. There's one Song Qianqiu, one Old Scholar, one Yang Xuanzong, and another Nangong who’s holed up on Mount Tai doing who knows what. None of them are easy targets. I think after dinner tonight, we should plan to take one down first."
I said, "I share that sentiment. My Time Walk has reached a major breakthrough; I can cover a thousand miles without being restricted by the Dao. As long as we prepare thoroughly and with Old Guo's calculations as support, we can strike together. Once the world is peaceful again, we can rebuild a town here in Jiangnan and live a peaceful and stable life."
Taihe Zhenren nodded in agreement.
Iron Bull said, "As long as there's meat to eat and I can follow the boss, I'm up for anything!"
Zhou Manman asked, "Who are we killing?"
Guo Daozhen and I exchanged glances and said in unison, "Let's kill Yang Xuanzong."
