White Snake possessed a power that surpassed even the Supreme Realm. However, under the constraints of the Dao and the rules that bound it, a human lived for a hundred years while a demon could live for a thousand. The limitations imposed by the Dao on demons were even greater. If one wished to transform into a snake like Jackie Chan and ascend to the ninth level, the tribulation faced would be far more terrifying than that encountered by human cultivators, making it nearly impossible to withstand the Might of the Dao.
Cultivators transcending tribulation seemed trapped in a vicious cycle; only those who reached the Tribulation Realm could transcend it. Yet, those who attained the Tribulation Realm were often over a hundred years old, their bodies having deteriorated to some extent. Their recovery abilities were significantly weaker than those of younger individuals, and their capacity to withstand the tribulation was greatly diminished. Once they attempted to transcend, it was almost certain death.
According to records in Daoist history, the most likely candidate to survive the tribulation was Laozi, the founder of Daoism. Another possibility included those historically referred to as Saints: Confucius, the founder of Confucianism; Mencius; Zhuangzi of Nanhua; Zhang Daoling, founder of the Zhengyi sect; Martial Sage Zhang Sanfeng; and Wang Shouren, known as the Literary Saint. Beyond these figures, there were no others, but ultimately, these remained mere speculations.
The only recorded individual who transcended tribulation and became immortal was Mud Buddha, the founder of Nanhai Guanyin Monastery.
Mud Buddha transcended tribulation by using the Mud Bodhisattva's Form to shield himself from a fatal calamity, forming an Ascension Elixir within his body that has been passed down through generations. Once obtained by a new master, this Ascension Elixir could at least create a master in the Mahayana Realm.
White Snake's inner alchemy surpassed even that of the Supreme Realm and was equivalent to an Ascension Elixir. If someone were to acquire White Snake's inner alchemy, a person in the Mahayana Realm could directly leap across a chasm to reach the Supreme Realm, while those not in the Mahayana Realm could step directly into it.
Master Hai Deng recited the Amitabha mantra while gazing at White Snake's massive form. He uttered "Amitabha" before turning to leave.
During the battle in Dunhuang, Leiyin Temple was destroyed. The Sky Master sacrificed himself while chanting Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's purification mantra, killing countless Yin Soldiers. Meanwhile, three great monks joined forces to fend off attacks from the Ghost King and White-Robed Old Scholar. Ultimately, only Withered Leaf Master escaped from the Desert with one of the Daoist Sacred Artifacts—the Everbright Lamp—after emerging from Dunhuang.
Master Hai Deng strained his cultivation to use the Everbright Lamp as protection and broke through space to flee far away.
Everything that transpired at Leiyin Temple was simultaneously revealed within a dim Secret Cave.
Inside the Secret Cave, Old Scholar was ensnared by an ancient Blood Tree. His meridians connected with the Blood Tree, continuously gathering its essence to strengthen himself.
Before Old Scholar, countless runes on the Great Zhou Compass spun rapidly. Reflected upon these runes were light shadows depicting Dunhuang being besieged by innumerable Yin Soldiers. He saw Ten Thousand Buddha Grotto ascend into the sky and witnessed Haikong and two Holy Monks perish in battle while Withered Leaf Master fled with the Everbright Lamp.
Old Scholar furrowed his brow as he recognized a face among countless corpses—Song Qianqiu.
"It must be this scoundrel; perhaps Long met his end at his hands. His Perfect Golden Core must have been seized by him," Old Scholar murmured. "With a Wanmei Golden Core, mastering any Daoist Arts would come easily. This Song Qianqiu practices Demon King's Scripture and wields Ghost Seal to control Yin Soldiers and Corpse Demons; yet he shouldn't have progressed so quickly— even the invincible Ghost King of the Underworld bows before him."
Seeing Sky Master and two Holy Monks rise again made Old Scholar frown deeply. "It seems someone harbors ambitions greater than Old Man's."
After finishing his thoughts, Old Scholar waved his hand and made the illusion vanish. He manipulated the runes on Great Zhou Compass; as they shifted, space shuttled him thousands of miles away into a Snow Valley.
In the skies above Snow Valley, Dry Leaf Monk fell from thin air, spitting blood as he clutched his flickering Everbright Lamp.
With a sigh, Dry Leaf Monk gazed at the falling snowflakes with sorrow in his heart. The death of Haikong weighed heavily on him along with his two junior brothers who perished on site. Fortunately, Ten Thousand Buddha Grotto managed to escape, leaving a glimmer of hope for Buddhist Sect.
"Kindness is your last hope for Buddhist Sect," Dry Leaf Monk said before collapsing onto the ground. Soon after, he was buried beneath blood as his life force dwindled further.
Suddenly, the sound of hooves echoed from Snow Valley. The snow-covered path was filled with the stench of wolf droppings as a pack of massive snow wolves appeared, drool dripping from their jaws, their eyes filled with ferocity. They had caught the scent of blood.
In Changbai Mountain and the northwest High Cold Region, a type of enormous wolf often lurked, rarely seen by humans. Once spotted, they were sure to be hunted down. These wolves were as large as calves and possessed an extremely savage nature, attacking in packs that no beast could withstand.
At this moment, the pack of wolves surrounded the Dry Leaf Monk, intent on making a kill. The Everlasting Lamp seemed to sense the impending danger, radiating holy light that enveloped the Dry Leaf Monk beneath the snow, protecting his safety.
Time passed without notice; the snow on the Dry Leaf Monk melted away, yet the snow wolves remained unwilling to leave, battering against the holy light of the Everlasting Lamp in an attempt to devour him.
Suddenly, a weary young man appeared from above Snow Valley. His feet were frostbitten, and he rubbed his cracked hands together for warmth. Upon seeing the flickering light of the Everlasting Lamp below and the Dry Leaf Monk shrouded in its glow under siege by the wolves, he roared, "Bold beasts! How dare you show such disrespect to a Buddhist Monk!"
With that, he leaped down from Snow Valley. A fierce snow wolf lunged at him, but he retaliated with a powerful punch that sent the wolf howling to the ground, bleeding from its ears and nose.
The other snow wolves witnessed their companion being attacked and charged at him in a frenzy. The young man snorted and stomped his foot hard; the Mountain Valley trembled, sending snow flying everywhere as the pack was thrown back, howling in pain.
After the snow wolves fled, the young man approached to help the Dry Leaf Monk up. However, the holy light of the Everlasting Lamp blocked him from entering. Seeing that Withered Leaf's breath was weak and he was on the brink of death, he hesitated for a moment before unleashing his Daoist Arts, emanating a strange light as he stepped into the holy glow.
He infused his Dao Qi into the Dry Leaf Monk's body and administered a pill. After a brief moment, Withered Leaf awakened.
Looking at the frozen ground around him and then at the young man also enveloped in the holy light of the Everlasting Lamp, Withered Leaf asked in surprise, "Did you save me?"
The young man replied, "You are Dry Leaf Monk of Leiyin Temple, right? I am Zhang Dao'an from Longhu Mountain, just an unknown individual."
Withered Leaf's expression turned astonished. "So you are a disciple of Longhu Mountain! No wonder you could break through the barrier of holy light."
Zhang Dao'an said, "It’s just some techniques recorded in my Ancestor Master’s notes; please don’t laugh at me."
Withered Leaf's face grew somber as he sighed. "The title 'Holy Monk' does not suit me. Leiyin Temple has been destroyed; my disciple Haikong has perished in battle, and my two junior brothers have also left me. The hope for reviving our Buddhist Sect has vanished like smoke."
"Even Leiyin Temple could not escape from Daoist Catastrophe? Five experts from Mahayana Realm were stationed there; who attacked Leiyin Temple?" Zhang Dao'an asked.
Withered Leaf replied, "It was Yin Soldiers. The Ghost King led countless Yin Soldier Army to besiege Leiyin Temple in Dunhuang. Isolated and helpless, ordinary disciples could not fend them off; only we few from Mahayana Realm and Elders could inflict damage on Yin Soldiers."
Zhang Dao'an remarked, "It seems this was ordered by Song Qianqiu. Now that Daoist Sect is scattered without a Dao Sovereign to oversee matters and with Spirit Energy depleting further, it is increasingly difficult to cultivate powerful individuals. True experts within Daoist Sect are rare. Dealing with Yin Soldiers and Corpse Demons along with Song Qianqiu and his Puppets will be exceedingly challenging."
Withered Leaf sighed again. "In fact, just days before the Ghost King attacked, Yang Hao and Shanxin came to warn us at the temple; however, we did not take it seriously. We never expected disaster would strike so soon. Is this Song Qianqiu truly that formidable?"
Zhang Dao'an explained, "The Demon King's Scripture grants him countless troops. Just this alone makes him a behind-the-scenes strategist. Any corpse that has not decayed can become his Puppet; countless Underworld Corpses transform into Yin Soldiers. Fortunately for now, he should only know about Qilian Mountain's Underworld Entrance; if he discovers other interconnected Underworlds in this world... it would be unimaginable! The war between living and dead would be inevitable—once dead, one becomes a new Corpse Demon—leading to a predetermined outcome of defeat before battle even begins. Moreover, he simultaneously wields Great Wilderness Scripture; any threat to his life cannot escape under its influence."
“Withered Leaf said, ‘Is it true that no one can stop this Calamity now?’
Zhang Dao'an replied, ‘Perhaps Yang Hao and Senior Sister Yu’s group can, along with Old Scholar and Sword Elder. However, at this moment, they are surely scattered in different directions, and their hearts are not united. Song Qianqiu is extremely meticulous; he will not confront anyone who poses a threat to him until he is certain of victory. Imagine a person with perfect talent, supported by thousands of experts laying the foundation for him. His cultivation speed could be unprecedented, advancing from Core Formation Stage to Mahayana Realm in just a year. If my estimation is correct, even reaching the final stage of Tribulation Realm within six months is possible. By then, his mastery over Demon King's Scripture and Great Wilderness Scripture will be unparalleled. Even if everyone unites, it may still be impossible to contend with him.’
‘Then the Daoist Catastrophe will not just be a Daoist Catastrophe; everyone will become his enslaved Puppet,’ Withered Leaf remarked.
Zhang Dao'an continued, ‘Holy Monk need not lose heart. In ancient times, there were Supremes who could eliminate practitioners of the Great Wilderness Scripture. Bodhidharma once killed practitioners of the Great Wilderness Scripture; it may not be impossible now.’
Withered Leaf responded, ‘While everything has its own causes and conditions, those who practice the Great Wilderness Scripture are not perfect talents. Such individuals are Eternal Unmatched. Ultimately, the source of this generation’s troubles leads back to Yang Hao. His Perfect Golden Core falling into the hands of someone like Song Qianqiu would be disastrous.’
Zhang Dao'an said, ‘I see that Holy Monk has already reached the pinnacle of Mahayana Realm; you are just one step away from entering Supreme Realm. At that time, you could become the sixth Supreme in a hundred years and have the power to turn the tide.’
Withered Leaf replied, ‘At my old age, stepping into Supreme Realm is no easy feat. But you, young man, though your talent is average, possess great wisdom and high comprehension. Among those I have seen, aside from Yang Hao, no one can compare to your understanding. My time is drawing near; I will pass on the Buddhist Sect's True Scriptures to you. Additionally, I will impart my Withered Leaf technique to ensure that the Buddhist Sect's Cultivation Method does not become lost.’
Upon hearing this from Withered Leaf, Zhang Dao'an immediately bowed deeply to him, performing the ritual of master and disciple.”
