Within the Underworld Ghost Realm, the Five Great Supremes gathered as Zhou Compass recounted the past. The Old Scholar chanted incantations, and the altar's Yinwen began to shift, glowing one by one. The barrier of the altar floated before everyone, the ground trembled, and a black book slowly rose from beneath the altar.
At that moment, a loud noise echoed from outside the Ghost Realm's gates. A figure emanating a chilling Ghostly Energy approached, accompanied by countless Yin Soldiers.
"It seems we've disturbed a ghost king guarding this place. We need to deal with them. Old Scholar, hurry and retrieve the Book of Life and Death!" commanded the Serpent Cult's Old Master, clad in crimson armor.
The four Supremes stepped onto the battlefield. Miao Guanyin blocked Yaochi Saintess and said, "Jiang Shangxiang, keep an eye on the Old Scholar while we handle this."
Yaochi Saintess nodded and returned to the altar. The Old Scholar continued his chanting; the seal of the altar gradually weakened. Just then, an ancient sword lunged toward the Old Scholar's back. Yaochi Saintess swiftly struck out her palm at him, shattering the sword as a swarm of Yin Soldiers surged from behind.
The Old Scholar nodded in gratitude to Yaochi Saintess. "I'll hold them off; you quickly get the Book of Life and Death," she urged.
As Yaochi Saintess joined the fray, a faint smile appeared on the Old Scholar's lips. He brought his index and middle fingers together and pointed to a specific incantation on the altar. A powerful Dao Qi shot forth, dispersing the incantation and revealing a half-yin, half-yang brush inscribed with "Spring and Autumn."
The Old Scholar grasped the Spring and Autumn Reincarnation Pen in his right hand while using his left to cast an Incantation toward the Book of Life and Death. A fierce wind howled as the book opened, releasing streams of black runes. The Old Scholar wrote four names in the blank spaces of the Book of Life and Death, one of which was Jiang Shangxiang's name.
However, he soon furrowed his brow as the four names quickly vanished from the page without affecting the other four Supremes.
"Old Scholar, what are you dawdling for? Move faster!" a voice shouted.
Hearing this, the Old Scholar swiftly drew a line across the Book of Life and Death with his Spring and Autumn Reincarnation Pen. He tore off a page and tucked it along with the pen into his sleeve.
The Book of Life and Death closed, returning to its original form. The Supremes gathered around him as he said, "I've retrieved the Book of Life and Death. Let's go."
With the Book in hand, the Old Scholar led the Supremes out of the Ghost Realm towards safety beyond the Underworld until their figures faded from view.
Wudao remarked, "That old fellow is truly cunning; he found a way to tear a page from the Book of Life and Death. It seems that back then, it was Yang Family Ancestor Old Scholar who orchestrated everything regarding that book. He wrote down the names of the Four Great Supremes to make them Immortal, but eliminating their disciples was an easy task!"
I exchanged glances with Yang Sanqian; disappointment reflected in our eyes—a shared disillusionment with our predecessors and beliefs.
The Old Scholar, with a talent unmatched for a thousand years, possessed the ability to surpass the ancestors of the Yang Family and created the Divination Technique. He was revered by thousands in Futu Ridge and was considered a deity. I grew up hearing stories about him. I initially thought that this Old Immortal was studying the Ghost Gate Secret Technique merely for knowledge, but it turned out he was after the Book of Life and Death.
The Book of Life and Death had been within me for over twenty years. The runes inscribed upon it could protect me, yet I could not comprehend how to wield it. Even with the Martial Dao Classic in my possession, I remained unable to grasp how to manipulate the Book of Life and Death, and neither could the other Supremes, including the Five Great Sect Leaders, uncover its secrets.
The reason lay with the Spring and Autumn Reincarnation Pen.
Without the Spring and Autumn Reincarnation Pen, no one could truly control the Book of Life and Death. Forty years ago, the Old Scholar was merely a master of the Mahayana Realm; who knew how formidable he had become after all these years? He must have developed something regarding the Book of Life and Death.
"Fortunately, the Book of Life and Death did not fall into the Old Scholar's hands," I remarked.
As soon as I spoke, a figure suddenly emerged from the Light Shadow—a black-robed elder. The brim of his hat obscured his face completely, making it impossible to discern his features; it was a projection of the Old Scholar I had seen at Mount Hua Summit.
I watched as this black-robed elder chanted incantations while setting up formations. From Yang Sanqian's eyes, I caught a glimpse of disappointment; clearly, he was disheartened by the Old Scholar's actions.
With a smirk, he said, "This truly is a case of one link leading to another!"
I adjusted the Zhou Compass, causing its needle to fluctuate clockwise. Moments later, from within the Light Shadow, a Female Taoist Priest appeared outside the Ghost Realm. She waved her Dust Whisk lightly, unleashing a mysterious and powerful wave that instantly shattered the formation as she stepped into the Ghost Realm. Following her was Zhou Manman.
Among the Five Great Supremes, only Yaochi Saintess and South Sea Wonderful Guanyin were women. Earlier, I had speculated that the woman dressed as a Taoist priest in the Light Shadow was Miao Guanyin. Not much had changed; those who reached their level aged very slowly.
"How did Senior Miao Guanyin end up with Zhou Manman?" Wu asked in confusion.
I shook my head but felt relieved to see Zhou Manman safe and sound.
Miao Guanyin approached the altar and drew a water-like Light Shadow in front of her with her right hand. Within that Light Shadow was reflected the scene from years ago when they—the Five Great Supremes—stole the Book of Life and Death. When Miao Guanyin saw the Old Scholar write his name on a page of the Book of Life and then tear it out, she snorted and said, "So it was indeed this Old Scholar's doing!"
"Senior, what should we do next?" Zhou Manman asked.
Miao Guanyin replied, "The Book of Life and Death is now in my possession. Since we have clarified matters, there is no need for it to remain here. However, its origins are mysterious; we must find a way to destroy it."
Miao Guanyin finished her task and left the altar, taking Zhou Manman with her as they exited the Ghost Realm.
"No wonder the formation was broken; it turns out it was Senior Miao Guanyin," Wudao remarked.
I replied, "Now the truth is out. The mastermind behind the Death and Life Register Incident was Old Scholar, and it's very likely that he was also the one who poisoned me."
"This Old Scholar has a wicked mind. My master dotes on me, yet he poisons his own family and judges them without mercy. He truly lacks humanity," Wudao said.
Yang Sanqian added, "Now that we have clarified the situation, let's leave. It's not safe to linger here."
I glanced at the Yinwen on the altar and nodded. The Book of Life and Death had been stolen, and the Spring and Autumn Reincarnation Pen was now in Old Scholar's hands. However, the meaning of the Ghost Seal recorded on this altar was unclear; it did not seem to have an unlocking method like the Book of Life and Death or the Spring and Autumn Reincarnation Pen.
"Haozi, let's go," Wudao called back. But then his expression changed slightly as he stared behind me and asked, "Who is that?"
I turned to look and saw a young man with scars on his face that could not hide his handsome features standing in the darkness. He was watching Miao Guanyin and Zhou Manman as they departed, then shifted his gaze to the altar in front of him, holding a piece of parchment map in his hand.
I noticed a hint of excitement in his smile before he turned and vanished into the shadows.
"Hao, do you know this person?" Yang Sanqian asked.
I nodded and said, "His name is Song Qianqiu. He used to be the top disciple of Azure Cloud Sect. On the surface, he appears to be a gentleman, but in reality, he is hypocritical and full of malice. Zhang Jianzi was killed by him, and both the Old Sect Leader of Azure Cloud Sect and the Grand Elder fell victim to him as well. If I’m not mistaken, he was also behind the Mass Slaughter of Thousands that destroyed Azure Cloud Mountain."
"How powerful is this person?" Wudao inquired.
I replied, "A year ago, he was at Core Formation Stage; his skills are average. Just now, he was holding a map, which surely indicates he is searching for something significant—something worth risking entering the Underworld for. I’ll use Zhou Compass to see where his map points."
As I stepped forward to adjust Zhou Compass, suddenly the air trembled. An ancient Great Halberd came crashing down from above. My figure vanished in an instant and reappeared beside Yang Sanqian and Wudao.
A massive Yin Soldier clad in iron armor glared at us menacingly.
"How can there be such tall Yin Soldiers? Could it be the Ghost King?" Five shouted.
"Dare to steal from my Underworld Ghost Realm, and I will ensure you ants have no way back!" A deep voice emanated from the massive Yin Soldier.
Yang Sanqian said, "It seems it really is the Ghost King. Otherwise, even if Yin Soldiers lived for a thousand years, they wouldn't be able to gain consciousness. You two go ahead; I'll hold him off for a moment at the cliff where we met before."
"Alright, take care, Dad." I replied, grabbing Five and rushing towards the exit of the Ghost Realm.
However, we hadn't taken more than a few steps when the roar of the Yin Soldiers echoed around us. Dust rose in the distance as the Yin Soldier Army surrounded the Ghost Realm.
Five and I retreated back into the Ghost Realm. At that moment, Yang Sanqian was using sealing techniques to restrain the Ghost King. I held my Frostblade and thrust it towards the Ghost King's heart.
The Ghost King's dark pupils turned towards me as he suddenly broke free from Yang Sanqian's restraints. With a single punch, he sent me flying. He swung his Great Halberd towards us, and the three of us quickly dodged to the side. Yang Sanqian carried us as we leaped through the Ghost Realm, fleeing outward.
The Ghost King looked at the blood on his chest and snorted, "As I return to the light of day, none of you shall leave alive!"
