Human Sacrifice
The great hall trembled as an ancient altar slowly rose from the center. Above the altar, a sword was locked in place by iron chains, its blade adorned with dragon engravings. Mysterious and ancient runes surrounded the sword, and at the front of the altar were two words: Dragon Abyss.
"So this is the ancient sword Dragon Abyss," Xiao Yan exclaimed, his eyes gleaming with fervor.
"Senior Brother Xiao, what is the origin of the Dragon Abyss Sword?" someone asked.
Xiao Yan replied, "The Seven Star Dragon Abyss Ancient Sword is a treasure from before the Pre-Qin period. It has passed through the hands of many emperors. Due to its dragon aura, it is said that Liu Bang used this sword to slay during the White Snake Uprising at Mangdang Mountain. By the time of the Tang Dynasty, the Dragon Abyss Sword was renamed to avoid the name of Emperor Li Yuan, becoming known as the Dragon Spring Sword. It is rumored that later it fell into the hands of a Supreme Daoist, who refined it to such an extent that it could slay true dragons. The Dragon's Essence Flower grew in the volcano of Medicinal Valley, maturing over a thousand years into a Holy Medicine. If I am not mistaken, it was this very Dragon Abyss Sword that once slayed a fire-breathing Coiling Dragon, after which it was sealed here."
If the Dragon Abyss Sword could slay dragons, then defeating a failed mutated Coiling Dragon outside would be trivial. Obtaining the Dragon Abyss Sword would be more valuable than even presenting it to our sect; after all, it is one of the most famous ancient swords. Everyone in the Daoist Sect hopes to possess their own magical artifact. The process of refining a Flying Sword can take ten to twenty years, and due to material limitations and lost forging techniques, many attempts end in failure. Thus, it is rare for anyone in the Daoist Sect to have their own magical artifact.
Among all the Outer Sect Disciples, only the third-ranked master of the Drawing Technique, Qing Shi, possesses a decent artifact. The rest, including even Xiao Yan, do not have one, nor do Elder Hong's esteemed disciples, Ma Yuan and Wang Xing.
No one desires this sword more than I do.
At this moment, I had not entered the great hall but could vaguely "see" some images reflected in my mind through the wall. Meanwhile, Water Master Liangyu, who had been following behind everyone, also entered the hall with them.
Inside the hall, Ma Yuan leaped toward the altar first. The crowd frowned, showing their displeasure; so many had already died, and now this twelve or thirteen-year-old child had obtained the Dragon's Blood Grass. Would they really allow him to take the Dragon Abyss Sword as well?
"Brother Ma has obtained the Dragon's Blood Grass. Is it too greedy to also take the Dragon Abyss Sword?" said a Short-Haired Youth, his gaze cold as he looked at Ma Yuan.
"My senior brother takes the sword; what right do you have to complain, you insignificant insect!" shouted Wang Xing, immediately striking out with his palm toward the Short-Haired Youth.
The youth retaliated angrily, countering with his own palm but was sent flying back, spitting blood and looking pale. "Wang Xing, you are truly formidable; even as a youth you stand out among adults," remarked Liang Yu.
"You want to give it a try? Go ahead," Wang Xing said defiantly.
"Then I will," Liang Yu replied with a smile, turning to Xiao Yan. "Brother Xiao, you wouldn't really pass up the chance to seize the Dragon Abyss Sword, would you? Don't forget, you haven't established your foundation in ten years. If the Dragon Abyss Sword can be handed over to the sect, even the Sect Leader would expend energy to break the flaws in your body."
Liang Yu's White Robe billowed as he charged at Wang Xing. The two clashed and quickly separated, each taking a step back before engaging again, fighting fiercely without yielding.
The onlookers were secretly astonished. Ma Yuan, having received Elder Hong's true teachings as his master disciple, was indeed formidable. However, they were surprised to see that Wang Xing could contend with Liang Yu, who ranked second among the Outer Sect.
Xiao Yan frowned, his expression uncertain. The moment Ma Yuan made contact with the Dragon Abyss, Xiao Yan moved.
A blue shadow flashed by, and with a thud, Ma Yuan was knocked off the altar and slammed against the wall of the hall. Blood immediately trickled from the corner of his mouth; he had been injured.
"This... so fast!" The disciples of Azure Cloud Sect watched in shock. They had never seen Xiao Yan strike before, but his speed was nearly imperceptible as he sent the seemingly invincible Ma Yuan reeling with blood pouring from his mouth.
It was important to note that Ma Yuan was the only Inner Sect disciple present, having entered the Foundation Establishment Stage a year ago. He was someone all Outer Sect Disciples looked up to. In Daoist cultivation, each realm represented a tenfold difference in power. While there were variations among individuals, even if Ma Yuan lacked Xiao Yan's talent, he shouldn't have been so easily defeated in one blow.
Xiao Yan looked at Ma Yuan and said, "Since you've already obtained the Dragon's Essence Flower, I'll take the Dragon Abyss Sword. Don't force me to take action."
Ma Yuan wiped the blood from his mouth and coldly snorted, "You've already made your move."
"If I truly struck, you would be dead by now," Xiao Yan replied.
"Haha." Ma Yuan couldn't help but laugh. "That's the best joke I've heard! You really are full of yourself—ten years without entering the Inner Sect and you're calling me out like this!"
Ma Yuan's Daoist Robe fluttered without wind as his Dao Qi surged. Surrounding weapons and arrows lifted off the ground and shot toward Xiao Yan.
Xiao Yan shook his head and suddenly vanished from sight. When he reappeared, he stood right in front of Ma Yuan. As Ma Yuan swung a palm toward him, Xiao Yan ducked low and reached out with two fingers toward Ma Yuan's throat. His movements seemed slow, yet Ma Yuan failed to land a hit while Xiao Yan struck at his throat.
Ma Yuan clutched his throat and spat out a mouthful of old blood, his voice turning hoarse as he said, "No wonder your Cultivation Method isn't from the Azure Cloud Sect. Who are you?"
Xiao Yan remained silent, advancing towards Ma Yuan once more. In a fit of anger, Ma Yuan struck out with his palm, but Xiao Yan deftly evaded the attack, moving gracefully without a hint of hesitation. He then countered with a backhand strike that sent Ma Yuan flying.
Ma Yuan crashed into the altar, gritting his teeth in furious anger. "I will kill you!" he shouted.
As Ma Yuan reached for his sword, he looked up just in time to see Xiao Yan standing on the altar, delivering a kick aimed at his face. In a panic, Ma Yuan raised his hands to protect his chin, but the kick landed squarely, knocking his jaw clean off.
The sound of shattered teeth echoed as Ma Yuan was sent hurtling backward, landing on the ground.
Xiao Yan declared, "In the Outer Sect, anyone who challenges me and fails pays with their life."
The arena fell into a deathly silence.
No one could have imagined that the imperious Ma Yuan would be so easily defeated by Xiao Yan. Even with a significant difference in cultivation levels, Ma Yuan was no match for him. Xiao Yan truly deserved to be the best in the Outer Sect; even Inner Sect Disciples were no challenge for him.
Xiao Yan then drew the Dragon Abyss Sword from the altar. The blade gleamed brightly, exuding an aura that commanded respect. As he unsheathed it, the stone door activated and slowly revealed a crack.
With a swift motion, Xiao Yan swung the sword at Ma Yuan. Instinctively, Ma Yuan covered his head as the sword's energy sliced through the air above him, creating a massive crack in the wall behind him.
"I'm letting you live this time as an exception—not because of Elder Hong's influence, but because of your age and the difficulty of your cultivation. Remember that rank does not define everything; take care of yourself," Xiao Yan said expressionlessly while gripping the sword.
Meanwhile, Liang Yu struck Wang Xing back with a palm. His robe sleeves suddenly elongated, wrapping around Wang Xing's neck and pulling him close. Wang Xing struggled but was unable to break free from Liang Yu's grasp.
"Let him go," Ma Yuan demanded fiercely.
"What if I refuse?" Liang Yu replied with a chuckle, his long nails dragging across Wang Xing's neck, drawing blood that trickled down.
Ma Yuan couldn't help but take a step forward. Wang Xing screamed as Ma Yuan's fingertips dug into his neck. Without even looking at Ma Yuan, he said, "If you have the guts, come and try. Let's see if you're faster or I am."
"You!" Ma Yuan was furious, clutching his injured neck as blood spilled from his mouth.
Liang Yu chuckled lightly and said, "If you want your junior brother's life, trade it for Dragon's Blood Grass."
Liang Yu was unaware that the Dragon's Blood Grass was hidden in Wang Xing's embrace. Wang Xing retorted, "You wish! Giving you the Dragon's Blood Grass would be a waste."
"Then don't blame me." Liang Yu snorted coldly, his fingers digging deeper, causing Wang Xing to scream in agony.
On the altar, Xiao Yan pointed his sword at Liang Yu and said, "Let him go, and you can leave."
"Xiao Yan, you're actually helping them?" Liang Yu glared at Xiao Yan.
Xiao Yan replied, "I don't want to repeat myself. Unless you want to die, get out."
"Fine, you've got guts." Liang Yu released Wang Xing.
"Get lost! You're neither man nor woman, neither human nor demon!" a young man mocked.
