Human Sacrifice
A group of people laughed heartily, praising my sense of humor.
Liu Wei said, "Brother, there must be something strange in the back mountain of Futu Ridge. We will definitely get to the bottom of it. Just wait for our good news. I believe you; some places really are off-limits. Let me tell you a story. There was once an article in a Scientific Report about a haunted villa on a mountain in England. The villa had just been built when strange occurrences began. The owner often heard various eerie sounds and experienced all kinds of hallucinations. They intended to move out, but after a few rainy nights, the entire family hanged themselves. Later, several families moved in one after another, and without exception, they all died. Only one person managed to leave in time, but they ended up going mad. Do you know why?"
Huzi replied, "It must be a feng shui issue; it was built on evil energy grounds and became a haunted house, or it attracted water ghosts."
"What do you think?" Liu Wei turned to me.
I said, "It can't just be because the new paint contains excessive formaldehyde."
The group burst into laughter again. Liu Wei patted my shoulder and turned to follow the Investigation Team heading towards the forbidden area in the north. Liu Wei said, "You're quite adorable. Once I finish investigating the strange happenings in the mountains, I'll give you a proper lesson. Young people should watch less fantasy; it can distort your worldview."
"What's the answer?" Huzi shouted at Liu Wei.
"I'll tell you when I get back. I suspect the situation in the back mountain's forbidden area is similar to the answer to my question," Liu Wei replied with a smile.
I interjected, "No need to ask; the answer is magnetic field."
The Gentleman walking beside Liu Wei adjusted his glasses and exclaimed, "Let me tell you why: because beneath that villa lies a large amount of magnetic red clay, which can cause significant harm to living organisms. The mountain is high, especially during thunderstorms when the magnetic field reacts strongly. People in a magnetic field can become mentally unstable and suffer from dysfunctions, dying from their own subconscious fears."
The young man waved goodbye to us, and Huzi waved back. He said, "Do you know why?"
"What's the use? They've already heard so much; they're probably tired of it. If a native explains scientific principles, it might sound even more thrilling," I said as I turned back towards the village.
The arrival of the Investigation Team at Futu Ridge did not cause much of a stir. Throughout history, countless detectives and police officers had come to investigate the disappearances and deaths associated with Futu Ridge, only to meet the same fate as those they sought to question—either dead or missing. Futu Ridge was like a curse, ensnaring the hearts of all who sought to uncover its secrets. Once someone stepped inside, there was no hope of walking out alive.
That night, Bright Moon Village shone particularly brightly, standing solitary amidst the mountains, as if stage lights had been set to illuminate it in broad daylight.
As dawn broke, many villagers heard a rumbling sound coming from the back mountain, accompanied by a slight tremor.
Members of the Investigation Team were permitted to carry firearms, and it would not be surprising if these individuals could concoct explosives on the spot. I wondered whether they had entered the forbidden area, seen things they should not have seen, or perhaps even broken the curse of Futu Ridge and emerged unscathed from the forbidden land.
But I knew that from that moment on, the gradual unveiling of the many secrets within the forbidden area had finally begun.
Early the next morning, I was awakened by Huzi's knocking. He had gotten up early and heard car horns, spotting the Investigation Team's vehicles entering the production team's yard from afar.
When Huzi and I arrived at the production team, we saw Captain Liu standing at the gate of the courtyard, smoking a cigarette.
"Uncle Liu, what happened?" I asked.
Liu Quan shook his head when he saw us and gestured for us to look for ourselves.
In the courtyard of the Production Team, several tattered straw mats lay in a row with eight bodies on them. Their faces were pale, almost indistinguishable from their silver protective suits. Some bore gashes made by sharp objects, yet their skin showed no signs of injury; they also lacked any vital signs.
Chen Jixian, who had been full of vigor just yesterday, now appeared somewhat disheveled. Two members of the Investigation Team stood beside him while two others were nowhere to be found.
"What exactly happened?" I asked.
Chen Jixian's gaze suddenly turned fierce as he grabbed my collar and shot me a glare. Huzi clenched his fists, ready to strike, but I quickly intervened.
Chen Jixian released his grip and said weakly, "I'm sorry, I didn't listen to your advice. It's my fault they died."
I asked, "Did you all enter the cave in the forbidden area?"
Chen Jixian replied, "Except for the three of us, everyone else went in."
It turned out that after Huzi and I left that evening, Chen Jixian and the members of the Investigation Team spent a long time studying the terrain and environment around Pine Forest, analyzing the soil structure. They indeed detected a powerful Magnetic Field in the vicinity using precise detection instruments, but they couldn't determine the center of the Magnetic Field because the needle on their instruments fluctuated erratically as if it were broken.
One of the members of the Investigation Team was a biology expert. He suggested that this could also be biological electromagnetic waves. When using the Infrared Life Detector, the needle similarly swung back and forth.
Fearing that the strong Magnetic Field in the forbidden area might harm them, they set up tents on the outskirts of Pine Forest.
At midnight, while keeping watch, Chen Jixian vaguely saw a light coming from the end of Pine Forest. Soon after, everyone inside the tent who had been sound asleep suddenly woke up in alarm.
There was no noise; everyone seemed to awaken simultaneously. Upon waking, they saw a woman dressed in white standing just outside their tent, watching them. They could see her but were unable to move until she turned and disappeared into the depths of Pine Forest.
No one realized this was a warning.
Decades ago during the Futu Ridge Snake Goddess incident, road construction had disturbed the Snake Goddess, resulting in everyone experiencing sleep paralysis overnight. They saw a woman in a Red Qipao standing on a hillside watching them. An Old Scholar had nailed a woman dressed in red to a tree on the back mountain—she was Guo the Blind's mother—and people couldn't tell whom they had offended by digging into the mountain for road construction.
Now, all those who had fallen asleep in the Investigation Team saw a woman dressed in white.
The bespectacled Gentleman made a joke, "It seems the Snake Goddess can change her outfit too."
They used a plethora of biological Magnetic Field theories to explain the strange occurrences that had just happened. Chen Jixian found it unusual because, despite not having fallen asleep, he had seen the light coming from the end of the Pine Forest just before the team members woke up.
The team members were eager to try their luck. They had cracked one supernatural case after another that had remained dormant for years and had witnessed phenomena where souls appeared. However, humans were the primates of all beings; they felt no fear and decided to head straight into the forbidden area for an investigation.
Chen Jixian pondered for a moment. They were here to find the missing Guo Huaiyi and to unravel the mystery of Futu Ridge, which had been hidden for centuries. If they hesitated now, they would never dare to enter again in the future.
Seeing Captain Chen Jixian preparing to lead the team into the forbidden area, Liu Wei said, "Captain, you three have kept watch all night. Just wait outside for us; we can't all go in together. You still have things to do tomorrow."
Thus, Chen Jixian and his two night-watch teammates watched as ten team members, including Lao Zheng, loaded up with various devices they might need and walked into the forbidden area under Chen Jixian's gaze.
Chen Jixian and his two teammates waited in the Pine Forest for a long time without seeing anyone come out. At some point, they dozed off. In their dreams, they vaguely heard cries for help, followed by a loud bang that jolted them awake.
Chen Jixian saw his teammates stumbling out of the moonlit forbidden area in disarray, guns firing wildly behind them until their ammunition ran out. They screamed in madness as Chen Jixian tackled one young man to the ground. Suddenly, that young man began foaming at the mouth and stiffened shortly after.
The others continued running toward the cars below Winding Mountain Road, falling one after another along the way. Once on the ground, they could no longer get back up. In the end, only forensic doctor Liu Wei remained alive.
I saw Liu Wei in the infusion room of the pharmacy. Unsurprisingly, although she was alive, she had already gone mad.
