Human Sacrifice
"I can't believe you're ready to kill someone over a disagreement. Your grandson really has some patience; he's cut out for great things," I said sarcastically.
Huang the Lame was clearly angered by my words. I had heard that he practiced martial arts in his youth and was likely someone who had killed before. He taught Huang San'er a few moves, allowing him to dominate the younger generation in Futu Ridge. At this late hour, it was just the two of us against five of them, but we weren't afraid. However, Huang the Lame seemed to be wary of something and showed no intention of attacking us. Guo the Blind beside me didn't stop me either, so I felt emboldened.
Seeing me continue to mock him, Huang San'er was furious. He had never been humiliated like this before and pulled out a knife, advancing toward me. But Huang the Lame stopped him with a sharp command: "Get back! Don't embarrass me!"
"Grandpa, I don't understand why you're siding with an outsider! One's a half-blind coward and the other's useless. No one would find out if we buried them in the wasteland. With my dad's connections at the police station, even if they did find out, what could they do?" Huang San'er shouted in rage.
Guo the Blind scoffed and looked at Huang San'er: "Only someone like you would bring up so-called connections. Trust me, your grandfather is stopping you for your own good. You don't have what it takes to kill me."
"You think you're so tough? If my brother can't take you down, I'll give it a shot!" Suddenly, a young man behind Huang San'er pulled out a Swiss Army knife and lunged at Guo the Blind.
I was startled and quickly picked up a rock from the ground to block Guo the Blind. A knife wasn't something to mess around with; if it pierced someone's heart, they would definitely die. Although I had seen fights before, I had never felt such fear until now that it was happening to us.
But before that young man could reach us, he was sent flying back with a thud, as if his chest had been crushed. The one who struck him was none other than Huang the Lame.
Despite being older than Guo the Blind, Huang the Lame effortlessly pushed that young man away as if he were nothing more than a feather. In my life, I had never seen anyone hit someone else so far with just one slap.
"Unbelievable," Huang the Lame's voice suddenly turned fierce.
The young man lay on the ground, writhing in pain and clutching his chest without uttering a word. The other two young men looked at Huang San'er with anger and asked, "Why is your grandfather hitting his own people?!"
Huang San'er's face turned sour, but he still raised a finger to silence them. The two young men had witnessed Huang the Lame's strength and could only swallow their anger. They needed something from him and were counting on him for their lives; they dared not provoke him further.
"Today's youth have no idea what respect means; they think they're invincible just because they have a knife," Huang the Lame said as he turned to Guo the Blind: "What brings you here hiding in this wasteland at such an hour?"
Guo the Blind glanced over and replied casually, "Nothing much; nature calls."
"Haha," Huang the Lame replied to Guo the Blind with evident dissatisfaction, pointing at me. "You go take a shit, and what is he going to do?"
"I'll go take a shit too," I said.
Upon hearing my words, Huang the Lame's expression turned extremely unfriendly. I suddenly felt a chill run down my spine and instinctively took two steps back. Guo the Blind patted my shoulder and chuckled lightly, saying, "Brother Huang, why bother arguing with a child? I was just joking. Since you insist on knowing our purpose for coming here, I'll be straightforward. We actually came here late at night to investigate the recent Ghost Killing incidents."
"Oh?" Huang the Lame raised an eyebrow in response. "And what did you find?"
"Naturally, we found nothing," Guo the Blind replied. "If Brother Huang couldn't uncover anything suspicious, what could I possibly find?"
Huang the Lame snorted, "In Futu Ridge, your reputation is far greater than mine."
Guo the Blind waved his hand dismissively. "Brother Huang is being modest. My reputation in Futu Ridge is indeed significant, but that's due to my identity as a local healer. I can handle difficult medical cases, but when it comes to feng shui, I'm certainly not as skilled as you. Besides, with your martial arts prowess and your possession of treasures from feng shui masters, you're the true authority on whether there are ghosts or not."
Upon hearing Guo the Blind's words, Huang the Lame's expression softened considerably. He didn't bother to be modest and seemed to accept the compliment.
"However, the recent events are too strange. The three young men who died in Dagu Village and Bright Moon Village all had done something inappropriate to that female driver. Previously, those kids had black veils appearing above their heads. Does Brother Guo really believe that Zhou Manman has no suspicion?" Huang the Lame asked.
Guo the Blind replied, "You must have seen it too—the ghostly flames and blood everywhere. Even after all that, she showed no signs of being possessed. While we may not fear ghosts, they wouldn't just allow themselves to be slaughtered like that. She's just an ordinary girl who has suffered so much for no reason; it's best not to scare her any further."
Huang the Lame nodded in agreement with Guo the Blind's perspective. It seemed he suddenly remembered something and added, "The conditions for a person to become a ghost include being nurtured by a corpse or possessing spiritual treasures. The feng shui here shouldn't allow someone to turn into a ghost; could it be that there was a spiritual treasure that guided her soul at the moment of her death, turning her into a ghost? And she might have that treasure on her person, which is why we haven't discovered anything here."
Guo the Blind responded, "That possibility isn't entirely out of the question. However, last night when you were hiding not far from Wind Stabilizer, you should have had a compass with you. If there were any spiritual entities nearby, your compass would have reacted. That female driver named Zhou Manman had nothing on her. Furthermore, do you know who this person beside me is?"
"What could he possibly be?" Huang the Lame squinted at me.
Guo the Blind chuckled and said, "Your grandson led people to bully that female driver; he was the only one willing to stand up for her in the car. So she wanted everyone in the car to die with her but ended up surviving herself. Now she has found this guy and has become his woman. You can ask him if they are now sleeping together as a couple."
Huang the Lame turned to me and asked, "So, did that female driver really share a bed with you?"
Although I felt a bit embarrassed, I nodded in acknowledgment.
Upon hearing my response, Huang the Lame furrowed his brow, looking puzzled. "That's strange. If that female driver were a ghost, sharing a bed with you would surely be for your Yang Qi. It wouldn't make sense for her to leave a ready target and go after someone else. It seems she is indeed not a ghost."
I understood Huang the Lame's reasoning; he assumed that if I had shared a bed with Zhou Manman, something intimate must have occurred between us. However, nothing had happened between us, and for Zhou Manman's safety, I couldn't disclose this matter to avoid causing her any harm.
Seeing Huang the Lame fall into silence, Guo the Blind spoke up, "I know you suspect me, but I am not the killer. I have watched these children grow up; I could never harm them. Besides, who could carry out such actions right under the noses of both Brother Huang and Li Fugui? It certainly wasn't me, and it definitely wasn't anyone from Futu Ridge. No one there has that kind of ability."
"So, you are certain the killer is not human but a ghost?" Huang the Lame asked.
Guo the Blind replied, "I can't say for sure it's a ghost, but it definitely isn't human. Futu Ridge is full of trees and mountains, and the northern wilderness is a forbidden area. As the saying goes, 'Clear waters do not harbor dragons; deep mountains must have monsters.' With thousands of years of history in Futu Ridge's deep forests, it would be strange if no mountain spirits or ghosts were born there. When I was younger, I studied feng shui with Old Scholar for several years, and he once witnessed a mountain spirit snatching children to eat. Although it wasn't in Futu Ridge, it's not impossible for something unusual to emerge from there. Every few decades, Futu Ridge experiences some disturbances; remember the Snake Goddess incident during road construction? You experienced it firsthand and know better than I do. Decades have passed, and things in the mountains are still unsettled; it's certainly possible."
Huang the Lame nodded at Guo the Blind's words and then looked up at the Winding Mountain Road. "Everyone on that bus died, and those who escaped have also encountered trouble. I need to go up and see if anything strange is happening."
"I think so too; perhaps the oddities lie along that old Winding Mountain Road," Guo the Blind agreed as he gazed toward the mountain.
