I found myself at a loss for words, falling into silence, while Zhang Tong remained quiet as well.
Fat Ma pouted, casting a disdainful sideways glance at me. I chose to ignore him.
"Let's go," Zhang Tong suddenly said.
I paused for a moment, but quickly regained my composure and moved forward. At that moment, my breathing became heavy without me realizing it, and an air of death seemed to permeate the atmosphere. Zhang Tong's grip on my clothes tightened.
We were treading on thin ice, every movement requiring utmost caution.
Fat Ma was about to step into the area where the corpse lay. I grabbed him and shook my head, then, taking advantage of Fat Ma's distraction, I stepped over the line that felt like a boundary of death. I deliberately leaped further away, hoping to avoid any traps by sheer luck. However, I miscalculated; soon after, several sharp arrows whizzed past me. I shouted, "Get back!" and quickly ducked to evade the arrows.
After dodging them, I wasted no time and sprinted toward the Bronze Giant Gate.
At that moment, I was less than three meters away from the Bronze Giant Gate, but those three meters felt like an insurmountable chasm keeping me outside.
As I took two steps forward, a barrage of arrows came flying at me with even greater speed than before. A cold glint flashed in my eyes; I knew there was no escaping this time. Resolutely deciding to take a chance, I lunged forward and slammed my head against the Bronze Giant Gate. For a moment, I felt dizzy, but before I could succumb to the haze, sharp pains shot through me as three arrows pierced my body. Blood flowed from the wounds, and I couldn't help but convulse in pain, cursing under my breath.
All of this happened in the blink of an eye; Fat Ma and Zhang Tong hadn't even reacted when I collapsed into a pool of blood.
Fat Ma let out a howl and tried to rush over.
I knew Fat Ma would come for me, as would Zhang Tong. Weakly, I called out, "Fat Ma, hold Zhang Tong back! Don't let her come over." I felt myself nearing the end of my strength, ready to fade away at any moment.
Zhang Tong shouted my name, desperately trying to reach me until Fat Ma knocked her out with a swift strike of his hand.
After ensuring Zhang Tong was settled, Fat Ma hurried over to me.
"Let me go," the Mud Man said as he took a step forward, but in the next moment, he was stopped by two of the strange figures.
"You can't go!" they exclaimed, blocking his path.
The Mud Man tried to break through but failed repeatedly. Finally, he couldn't hold back and cursed, "Damn it!" Fat Ma was on the verge of crossing that deadly line.
I lay on the ground, feeling my consciousness slipping away bit by bit. It was as if I was sinking into chaos, my senses fading slowly. Perhaps death was approaching me step by step.
Just as Fat Ma was about to cross over, I mumbled for him not to come any closer. After that, everything went dark; I thought I had died.
Then came a loud crash. Fat Ma stumbled backward from the shock as the Bronze Giant Gate opened slightly. Many people, witnessing this change, became excited, seemingly forgetting what had just happened.
It seemed like I had been forgotten too.
The Bronze Giant Gate slowly opened, and with its massive rumbling sound, accompanied by the crowd's excitement, the Ghostly Heavenly Palace was about to be revealed.
What is meant to come will always come.
Amidst everyone's astonished gazes, the Bronze Giant Gate successfully swung open. A heavy, ancient scent rushed out, and Fat Ma dashed forward. However, this time he wasn't heading into the Ghostly Heavenly Palace; he came straight toward me.
Fat Ma wrapped his arms around my neck and shouted loudly, "Old Sun, you can't die!" His voice was filled with desperation. "Old Sun, you absolutely mustn't die!" My head was shaken violently.
At that moment, seeing Fat Ma unharmed in the midst of the deadly line, the crowd erupted in joy. They all wished they had been born with two extra legs as they surged toward the Bronze Giant Gate.
Including that mysterious person, and Old Wang, Fish Head Elder.
When Fish Head Elder left, he left a pill for Fat Ma.
The Mud Man and Old Ghost stopped by me as they passed, and strangely, that group of eerie individuals never left the Mud Man's side.
The Mud Man quickly checked my pulse. Fat Ma's hoarse voice was nearly gone, yet he still couldn't shed a tear. Old Ghost supported the unconscious Zhang Tong.
“Mud Man, you have to save Old Sun!”
The Mud Man had no time to pay attention to Fat Ma. He swiftly helped me stop the bleeding and then gave me a pill. In my dazed state, I sensed everything around me, but eventually, all perception faded away.
It felt like I had plunged into darkness; perhaps I was truly dead.
I had no idea how much time had passed.
Finally, with a scream akin to that of a slaughtered pig, I seemed to see a glimmer of light. However, my feet didn’t touch the ground. Confused, I realized I was in the Hall of Yama. I speculated in my mind and couldn’t help but curse silently, thinking about how to speak with Yama—at least I should get into heaven!
As I pondered this, another wave of pain surged through me.
Damn it, could death still hurt?
I slowly opened my eyes; the brightness was blinding, so I shut them again. Soon after came another pig-like scream, followed by heavy gasping and cursing.
Why did this sound so familiar? Could it be that Fat Ma had also kicked the bucket?
I couldn't help but struggle a bit.
Fat Ma sensed my movement and immediately, as if he had eaten something strange, he shouted, "Old Sun, you're really not dead!" He laughed again, but quickly resumed running.
I was jolted awake by Fat Ma's words, being carried on his back as he fled.
I wondered to myself what trouble this Fat Ma had gotten into again. Just as I was about to move, I found myself completely powerless, unable to move at all.
"What happened to me?" I asked.
Fat Ma shouted, "Old Sun, you survived a great calamity; there must be blessings ahead." Hearing him say this, I looked around and realized that many corpses were sprawled across the ground in disarray.
"An Eternal Zongzi has appeared here," Fat Ma explained as he continued to run.
"Eternal Zongzi!" I repeated in astonishment.
"I don't know which bastard provoked this Eternal Zongzi; it's really bad luck!" Fat Ma cursed angrily.
My mind cleared up a bit. Watching the route Fat Ma was taking, I felt something was off. Finally, I pointed out, " Fat Ma, why do you keep running in circles?"
Fat Ma replied, "Old Sun, are you stupid? It's an Eternal Zongzi! Think about what an Eternal Zongzi is!"
