The sun rose gently from the east as I woke up early. I opened the shop for Fat Ma and then went out to buy breakfast. Once everything was set, I leaned on the counter, boredly watching the bustling street outside.
Suddenly, the phone on the counter vibrated. I picked it up, and a familiar yet strange voice came through. At first, I didn’t recognize it, but when she spoke again, I realized it was Zhang Tong.
What was she doing calling me? According to my calculations, she should have just arrived in Beijing not long ago. Just as I was pondering this, Zhang Tong's voice pulled me back to reality.
"You need me to contact Professor Sun; he agreed to meet with you."
Professor Sun? I quickly processed this information and responded eagerly.
Zhang Tong chuckled on the other end of the line. "Don't get too excited just yet. Professor Sun has other commitments and will only be in Beijing for a week, so if you want to see him, you need to hurry."
"Okay," I said, thanking her before hanging up.
I thought about it; it would take at least three or four days to get from Changsha to Beijing. If I set off now, I would definitely miss Professor Sun. I was desperate to meet him because this could be a crucial step in unraveling all the mysteries we faced.
Fat Ma was still snoring away, so I hurriedly woke him up. Still groggy, he blinked at me and asked, "I'm going to Beijing; are you coming?"
Fat Ma sprang up at the mention of Beijing. "Old Sun? What are you going to Beijing for?"
"Zhang Tong just called and said Professor Sun is willing to meet us."
Fat Ma perked up at that. This was about the secrets of the Ghostly Heavenly Palace. If we could find it and unlock its treasures, we could finally wash our hands of this business for good. A momentary flash of these thoughts crossed Fat Ma's mind.
"I'm in."
Looking into Fat Ma's determined eyes, I said, "Then hurry up and pack your things."
Once his enthusiasm was ignited, his energy levels skyrocketed. "What do we need to pack? We'll just buy everything again once we get to Beijing."
I looked at him in surprise.
"Fat Ma is laughing, 'Didn’t we make a deal yesterday!'"
In the end, we quickly gathered a few pieces of clothing and rushed towards Changsha Train Station. However, after leaving, we overlooked an important issue: who had rummaged through Fat Ma's shop? At that moment, we were too preoccupied to care. Once we boarded the train, we headed north.
As soon as we got off the train, I spotted the graceful Zhang Tong. The fat guy eagerly approached her, greeting her with a beaming smile, as if we were long-lost siblings.
Although Zhang Tong wasn't as enthusiastic as Fat Ma, she wore a smile on her face.
"You must be tired from your journey. Let me take you to the hotel to rest. We'll have dinner together later, and Professor Sun will join us then."
Fat Ma and I nodded in agreement.
Beijing, as the capital, was bustling with activity, and I was dazzled by it all. The last time I was here was for medical treatment, so I had overlooked these sights; this time, it was truly a feast for the eyes.
The fat guy kept chiding me for not having seen more of the world. I couldn’t be bothered to respond.
Zhang Tong chatted with me casually along the way. After we settled into the hotel, just as I was about to lie down and rest, someone knocked on the door. I let her in.
It was Zhang Tong, who naturally sat down on my bed.
Watching her do this made me feel somewhat awkward. "Is there something you need?"
Zhang Tong wore a generous smile, which contrasted sharply with how she had been crying in Guangxi. Was this really the same girl?
"By the way, Old Sun, I have something to discuss with you."
I looked at her with curiosity.
Zhang Tong maintained a smile as he said, "Professor Sun has a bit of a strange temper, so be careful when you meet him."
I didn’t respond at first.
Zhang Tong continued, "I'll come pick you up in the evening."
It was only then that I realized and nodded in agreement. Zhang Tong got up from the bed and, as he was leaving, turned back with a smile that felt somewhat odd to me.
I rushed to the bathroom to wash my face. When I looked in the mirror, I noticed my face was flushed. Damn, this is all I’ve got.
After drying my face, I lay down on the bed, and soon sleepiness overtook me.
Fat Ma was staying in the room next door.
I don’t know how much time passed before someone knocked on my door, the sound echoing insistently. I opened my eyes to find that night had already fallen.
The room was pitch dark. I fumbled around until I found the switch; when I pressed it, the room lit up suddenly, almost blinding me.
When I opened the door, Fat Ma's hand was poised mid-knock. Upon seeing me, he immediately broke into a grin. "Old Sun, you finally woke up!"
Standing next to the chubby guy was Zhang Tong. After a quick tidy-up, we headed out. This time, Zhang Tong had somehow managed to get a car, and Fat Ma and I climbed in.
