The instigator, the Mud Man, burst into laughter again. Fat Ma was so furious that his face turned green, but facing this group of black creatures, Fat Ma had no solution and could only endure.
The situation was deteriorating; Hills had already grabbed the rope and climbed onto the beam.
“Aran, it’s your turn,” said White Zhi.
“I’ll wait a bit longer; let that kid go up first,” Aran replied, pointing at Xiao Nan.
Xiao Nan looked slightly surprised and was about to argue when I urged him, “There’s no time; hurry up.”
“Alright, Brother Sun,” Xiao Nan responded.
At this moment, the black, viscous insects had multiplied to the point where they were nearly swarming at my feet. They writhed as they slowly approached us, their incessant chattering sending chills down my spine.
They feared fire, and alcohol could ignite it, but unfortunately, there was very little left.
Currently on the beam were Hills, Xiao Nan, White Zhi, and another unknown person. Aran remained below, holding a prepared explosive with a serious expression.
“Should we go up?” I whispered to the Mud Man.
“Let’s wait a bit! You and Fat Ma go up first,” I replied. Taking a deep breath, I called out to Fat Ma.
Fat Ma turned around abruptly and asked, “What’s up, Old Sun?” Just as he finished speaking, the black creature mimicked his words, leaving Fat Ma looking slightly embarrassed.
I won't beat around the bush any longer. I shouted, "Fatty, you go up first."
Fat Ma stared at me with wide eyes, clearly ready to argue. I snapped, " Fat Ma, if you're slow later, you'll be holding us back."
This only made Fat Ma more defiant. He opened his mouth to curse, "Old Sun, don't underestimate Fat Master me." But in the next second, he immediately shut his mouth.
Niren was getting anxious and cursed, "Where's all this nonsense coming from, Fat Ma?"
At that moment, I felt like an ant on a hot pan; time was of the essence. I said, "If you don't go up now, we'll all die together."
Hearing the word "die," Fat Ma stopped arguing and grabbed the rope. White Zhi pulled him up from above.
Gasping for breath, Fat Ma gestured for me to hurry up.
"Don't rush," I replied.
"Why aren't you going up yet?" I asked Aran.
"You guys go ahead; I want to let them taste the bomb," Aran replied.
"The bomb won't do much in this situation; there are too many of them."
"That's none of your concern. I have my own methods."
I was met with a cold shoulder, momentarily at a loss for words. At that moment, Hills shouted, "Don't mind her, you all come up first."
A wave of black creatures surged forward.
I exchanged a glance with the Mud Man, who wasted no time and climbed up the rope. Just before I followed, I asked Aran one last time, "Are you really not coming up?"
"Stop with the nonsense," Aran replied impatiently. My face flushed at her words, and I no longer hesitated. By now, there were seven people standing on the beam.
As the black creatures drew closer, Aran slowly backed away. Suddenly, she threw the explosives in her hand and quickly grasped the rope.
Fat Ma, seeing this, pulled with all his might.
Once I saw the explosives thrown, I hurriedly instructed Xiao Nan to hold onto the pillar to avoid being knocked off by the blast.
However, to my surprise, it did not explode; instead, it emitted a blinding light and burst into sparks like fireworks. The difference was that it was burning. Soon, those closest to it caught fire, letting out piercing cries of agony that sounded like hundreds of children sobbing in terror—a chilling sound that sent shivers down my spine.
We stood above watching, our hearts gripped as if by a thorn slowly growing within us.
I couldn't help but admire Aran a little. The fierce flames blazed brilliantly in the Golden House, casting eerie colors that made the firelight appear even more enchanting and sinister.
Especially those cries—they truly struck fear deep within me.
The flames created a circle of fire among the thick black insects, but those on the outskirts remained unharmed; they continued to breed at an alarming rate.
As time passed, the flames gradually extinguished. Although they maintained their breeding rate, they did not expand outward.
Once the fire was completely out, they quickly filled the void, but overall, their numbers shrank by nearly twenty percent.
Fat Ma couldn't help but praise Aran for a job well done.
Unexpectedly, they even had the leisure to mimic Fat Ma's voice.
"Aran, well done! Aran, well done!" echoed from below. Aran shot a glare at Fat Ma.
Fat Ma chuckled twice. However, soon a worried expression crossed his face; I knew he was afraid that his voice wouldn't be able to bounce back.
I nervously watched the situation below, praying that they wouldn't be able to climb up. But even if they couldn't make it up here, we were trapped above and would only be waiting for death.
Thinking of a second possibility showed my optimism, but I overlooked a fatal flaw: the soft-bodied worms were always good at climbing trees and walls.
"Here they come!" Suddenly, Xiao Nan exclaimed, interrupting my thoughts.
I quickly looked at the pillar and saw a circle of black crawlers surrounding its base.
The clay figure poured liquor down the pillar, and it cascaded downwards. The clay figure then took out a lighter and ignited it. In an instant, a fire dragon shot forth like an arrow released from a bow.
The flames once again reached them, followed by a piercing scream. Among the cries were mentions of Aran and Fat Ma; it seemed they were in disarray this time.
I gathered my thoughts. If things continued to develop this way, the consequences would be beyond our control. Moreover, it seemed that only fire could stop them and save ourselves.
Fire, fire. To have fire, we needed something combustible to support it. My gaze wandered around until I noticed the bed again; it might be our only lifeline for survival.
I hoped that the bed wouldn't be the last straw that broke us.
The key now was how to get close to that bed. I voiced my thoughts, and they didn’t oppose me.
I planned to go alone, but Fat Ma volunteered for the task. I would have felt more at ease with anyone else, but I couldn't shake off my worries about Fat Ma's careless nature.
However, Fat Ma was adamant this time and refused to back down. With no other option, I agreed to go with him.
As we prepared to descend, I said to the clay figure, "Take care of Xiao Nan." The words almost slipped out of my mouth again, but I held them back. If I hadn’t said that, the clay figure would definitely follow us, and then Xiao Nan would likely want to come too, turning everything into chaos.
White Zhi told us to wait a moment. He secured the rope and then used Crossbow’s sharp arrow to shoot directly into the stronghold behind the bed. The rope extended outwards, undoubtedly providing us with some assurance.
I grabbed the rope and made my way over, with Fat Ma following closely behind.
As I jumped down, the black, viscous insects were only a foot away from the bed.
I shouted at Fat Ma to land directly on the bed.
Fat Ma followed my instructions and completed his task swiftly. Then he quickly grabbed the blanket from the bed. Suddenly, a Golden Mouse tumbled out from inside.
It was panicking, intending to escape towards the exit, but after just two steps, it immediately froze, turned around, and frantically darted under the bed.
"Stupid rat," Fat Ma cursed, but I paid no mind. A single mouse was nothing to worry about; survival was the priority.
At that moment, the few people on the beam were also in danger as they began to climb up the pillar again.
Just as I was fretting over how to break this bed, flames ignited behind me. I saw that Fat Ma had set the blanket on fire.
However, it extinguished in less than a minute; after all, the bedding had seen better days and was already decayed.
Seeing that it was ineffective, Fat Ma panicked and took a few steps back. I couldn't blame him; I needed him to figure out how to deal with the bed issue.
After hearing my words, Fat Ma appeared confident. He quickly did some warm-up exercises and then jumped down onto the bed.
With a loud crack, the bed was on the verge of breaking. I felt a surge of joy while Fat Ma cried out in pain.
After he got up, I lunged at it too. Another loud sound echoed as the bed nearly broke apart. It should be close enough, I thought to myself as I quickly got up and tried to lift the bed. There was no response. I called out to Fat Ma, but still no reaction.
"Damn it! This broken bed is so heavy," Fat Ma complained.
Unable to lift it anymore, we decided to just smash it apart. So there we were, two human bombs, and finally, with a loud crash, the bed broke.
When I grabbed a piece of shattered wood, I finally understood why this bed was so heavy; even a single plank required both my hands to lift.
Although heavy, the wood inside was decayed, and once it caught fire, it would burn easily.
I lit the wood in my hand and began to roast the thick, black, sticky insects nearby as if curling my hair. At that moment, a wretched scream echoed close by, truly making one shudder.
Fat Ma, relying on his strength, held up a piece of bed board and ignited it. Flames immediately burst forth, and I felt a wave of intense heat rising beside him.
Fat Ma laughed loudly, his voice oddly out of tune with the situation.
I shouted to them, "Come over here!" as I saw the black crawlers about to climb onto the beams.
Without hesitation, they followed my lead. I had Fat Ma hold the front while I assisted them—first Xiao Nan, and finally Aran. Once everyone was steady, each person had a torch in hand.
"It’s time to break through," I suggested.
However, Hills shook her head. "Now is not the time." I looked at her in surprise and couldn't help but ask, "What mission do you need to complete?"
Hills pressed her lips together and seemed to struggle before finally saying, "The real clue."
"What clue?" I asked urgently.
"Ghostly Heavenly Palace," she said firmly, the words resonating as they left her mouth.
