"Don't say it if you don't want to," Fat Ma said weakly.
Xiao Nan turned his face away, no longer paying attention to Fat Ma.
Old Mountain Master held the White Handkerchief in his hand, testing the resilience of the Gold Thread. Then he pulled hard, and surprisingly, the entire coffin shook.
I was stunned. A tiny Gold Thread had such great strength. Just as I was thinking about this, suddenly, the previous gurgling sound echoed again.
My heart raced as I shifted my gaze elsewhere, searching for the source of the sound. "It's appeared again," the Mud Man muttered.
Xiao Nan's expression tightened a bit as he asked, "What has appeared?" His lips trembled slightly, revealing his fear.
As we approached the coffin, I realized that the sound was not coming from inside it.
Old Mountain Master's movements came to a halt.
Black Glasses scanned the surroundings. Can he see it? This question inexplicably arose in my mind. I glanced at Black Glasses; he was seriously observing everything around him, so he should be able to see it, I concluded.
The gurgling sound continued. Suddenly, I recalled the candles from earlier; they had not only remained lit but seemed impossible to extinguish until Fat Ma forcibly put them out.
"Are you scared now?" Fat Ma seized the opportunity to intimidate Xiao Nan.
Xiao Nan replied defiantly, "I'm not afraid with my master here," straightening his back deliberately, though he quickly hunched down again.
The source of the sound was unclear and could not be pinpointed.
I asked the Mud Man, "Can you determine its location?"
The Mud Man listened intently, signaling me to remain silent. Soon, he bent down to the ground and, after straightening up, his eyes revealed a look of horror as he said, "The source of the sound is underground. The coffin cannot be moved; there are living creatures below!"
"Living creatures? Are you sure about that, Mud Man?" Fat Ma pressed for clarification.
"I am certain," the Mud Man replied firmly.
Old Mountain Master spoke up, "Young brother, can you determine what kind of living creatures are down there?"
The Mud Man's tone shifted. "I don't know, but it's best not to move the coffin."
Having seen many storms over the years, Old Mountain Master was not one to back down just because of the Mud Man's words; his experience spoke for itself!
After a brief pause, Old Mountain Master continued to hold the handkerchief while pulling on Gold Thread. The coffin scraped against the ground, producing a rustling sound, yet it did not budge from its original position.
Sweat began to bead on Old Mountain Master's forehead.
The Mud Man remained calm, his gaze fixed on Old Mountain Master's actions.
I stood a bit further back, naturally on guard as well.
Suddenly, the side of the coffin was pulled slightly outwards, indicating that the entire coffin had loosened.
Seeing this, Old Mountain Master did not rush; instead, he became even more cautious.
It suddenly dawned on me that this coffin was designed similarly to a drawer; it could be pushed or pulled out. As long as the obstacles blocking the securing gears were removed, the drawer could be extracted.
I watched intently, focusing all my attention on the coffin and ignoring the Mud Man's mention of living creatures underground.
I also wanted to see what kind of person was buried in this legendary Eastern Divine Wood.
Fat Ma's eyes were nearly bulging out, showing his keen interest in the Mingqi inside the coffin.
As the coffin was pulled out sideways, revealing a pair of embroidered shoes, Old Mountain Master's movements became even slower.
I held my breath, feeling a chill run down my spine.
Seeing Old Mountain Master move so slowly, Fat Ma leaned forward and asked, "Old Mountain Master, do you need my help?"
Old Mountain Master shook his head in refusal.
Fat Ma tightened his steps and leaned in a bit more.
The coffin was pulled out further, and we could already see the ankles. It was clear that both the skirt and shoes had not decayed; crucially, it seemed that the body had also remained intact.
This was a technical job; it was essential to control the strength of the Gold Thread properly.
After pulling out a section, Old Mountain Master suddenly found the coffin stuck. He pushed it back in and then slowly pulled it out again.
Fat Ma was anxious behind Old Mountain Master, his expression was nothing short of spectacular!
Crouching down to take a closer look, Fat Ma casually said to me, "Old Sun, it should be a female corpse."
I didn’t respond but continued to focus on Old Mountain Master's actions.
During this time, Old Mountain Master took another sip of wine, and his spirit seemed to improve slightly. The coffin was pulled out a bit more, revealing the calves. Surprisingly, the skin looked as if it could be easily pierced.
Xiao Nan stood beside the old man, occasionally wiping the sweat from his brow.
At that moment, I felt an inexplicable tension rising within me as Fat Ma's shifty eyes began to dart around.
Before long, the Coffin was pulled out further, reaching knee level.
Fat Ma remarked, "Feet facing outward, head inward. No matter how you look at it, something feels off."
We were on the verge of revealing the truth. I adjusted my breathing; my waist was already exposed, and I could see my hands firmly pressing against my abdomen.
Old Mountain Master’s breathing grew heavier.
The gurgling sounds continued, but we had completely lost interest in them. The female corpse had captured all our attention.
It felt as if my very soul was ensnared by her presence.
Though Old Mountain Master moved slowly, he did not stop. After a moment, he reached the neck area.
We continued to shift back with the Coffin, making room for its extension.
I caught sight of her black hair and deduced that she must have been a young maiden.
However, when the female corpse's face was revealed, I felt my heart and lungs constricting, a tingling sensation running from my scalp down to my toes.
Xiao Nan turned pale with fright and collapsed to the ground. Even Old Mountain Master's hand trembled involuntarily. Fat Ma let out a shriek and mumbled, "Where did her face go?"
I steadied myself; this was a Faceless Female Corpse. I had to admit that the Coffin made of Dark Wood was indeed exquisite, preserving this female corpse in pristine condition. The only flaw was her lack of a face, likely a result of torture.
At that moment, the sound of clucking grew even louder.
The Old Mountain Master wore a serious expression as he used a tool resembling surgical forceps to pry open the hand of the Faceless Female Corpse, revealing a piece of translucent Red Blood Jade.
Fat Ma's eyes lit up, and he quickly reached out to grab the red jade.
The Old Mountain Master frowned and reminded Fat Ma, "The Mingqi belongs to you, but I keep my word. Just be careful!"
Fat Ma approached with a smile, saying, "Old Mountain Master, I got a little carried away in the moment. Please forgive me."
Xiao Nan, regaining some composure, sneered, "You Southern School people just can't help yourselves when it comes to money."
As long as Fat Ma got his hands on the Mingqi, he didn't care what anyone said and ignored Xiao Nan's remarks.
Xiao Nan continued to speak, but Fat Ma threatened him, "Watch it or I'll toss you into a coffin."
Xiao Nan was frightened into silence.
It was then that the Mud Man spoke up, "The Southern School has its own rules."
The Old Mountain Master grew somewhat angry and said, "Everyone shut up! This is not the time for arguments!"
The group fell silent at once, leaving only the eerie sound of clucking in the air.
The Old Mountain Master continued his work with the forceps and soon extracted a golden jade lock. True to his word, he handed it over to Fat Ma.
The Fat Ma was so delighted that he could hardly keep his eyes open.
It was time to turn over, and the Old Mountain Master knew he couldn't do it alone. Fat Ma volunteered.
The Old Mountain Master instructed Xiao Nan to give Fat Ma a pair of white gloves.
Fat Ma quickly put them on, muttering, "It's quite a big deal for my first time on the ground."
The Old Mountain Master reminded Fat Ma to check his hands and feet. Although Fat Ma readily agreed, I couldn't help but caution him to be careful.
One of them supported her head while the other supported her feet.
Slowly, they turned her body over, and Fat Ma murmured, "The feel is pretty good."
But just as Fat Ma finished speaking, the Faceless Female Corpse suddenly sat up.
Fat Ma let out a scream and abandoned the corpse, fleeing in panic. The Old Mountain Master remained steady for a moment longer but quickly withdrew his hands and pulled Xiao Nan away from the stone platform.
At that moment, I lost my focus and fell behind. The Faceless Female Corpse grabbed my hand, and I felt as if six of my seven souls had fled; my whole body trembled, and my scalp tingled.
I shook my hand vigorously, but to my horror, I couldn't break free. This was bad. I drew my dagger and turned around; everything happened in an instant.
To my surprise, the Faceless Female Corpse tightened her grip around my neck...
