After helping her father finish his meal, Li Xiumei took the empty basket and headed home alone.
On the way back, images of Zhao Guangcai's kindness towards Zhang Xiaoxiao kept flashing through her mind, stirring up a wave of jealousy within her. She couldn't understand what charm Zhang Xiaoxiao possessed that made Zhao Guangcai treat her so well.
Li Xiumei believed she was just as attractive as Zhang Xiaoxiao, if not more so. After all, she was younger and more gentle and considerate than Zhang Xiaoxiao. Yet, why did Zhao Guangcai never spare her a glance?
She felt an intense envy towards Zhang Xiaoxiao, to the point where it bordered on hatred. Every time she encountered Zhang Xiaoxiao, she instinctively avoided her, unable to face her directly. Even the sound of Zhang Xiaoxiao's voice made her choose to take a detour.
She feared that if she confronted her, her inner jealousy would spill out. She dreaded the thought of others discovering her true feelings. As these thoughts swirled in her mind, a sense of irritation washed over her.
With her head down, she walked slowly, completely unaware that the sky was gradually darkening. By the time she realized it, night had fully fallen.
“Oh no!” Li Xiumei exclaimed, quickening her pace. She never expected to have dawdled for so long; now that it was completely dark, if she didn’t hurry, she might not get home until dawn.
The more she thought about it, the more she loathed Zhang Xiaoxiao. If it weren't for her words, she wouldn't have wasted so much time. As these thoughts consumed her, she hurried forward.
As she walked, suddenly a slope appeared before her. She paused for a moment and then stopped in her tracks. She remembered that this path was difficult to navigate because it was very slippery—ordinary people could hardly walk on it at all.
Looking around, she saw no source of light except for the moonlight illuminating the way. After hesitating for a moment, she took a deep breath and mustered up the courage to attempt crossing it.
Step by step, she moved forward cautiously, carefully placing each foot down. However, the slope was indeed too slippery.
She had just taken two steps when her foot suddenly slipped, and she lost control, rolling downwards.
"Ah!" she exclaimed, and in her panic, she grabbed onto a protruding rock, trying to steady herself.
However, the rock was too slippery for her to hold on to. She could only continue to roll down with the momentum.
With a loud thud, she felt a sharp pain in her forehead, and darkness enveloped her as she lost consciousness.
As night fell, the stars twinkled faintly in the sky, illuminating the land below.
Amidst the weeds, Li Xiumei lay there, her life hanging in the balance.
Not long after she fell unconscious, a black sedan approached from a distance.
"Young Master, it seems there's someone lying ahead," the driver alerted Zhao Xiaosong, who was seated in the back.
"Hmm?" Zhao Xiaosong raised his eyes and indeed saw a dark figure in the grass.
Frowning slightly, he remained silent for a moment before opening the car door and stepping out towards the bushes.
"Young Master, please be careful," the driver cautioned as he noticed Zhao Xiaosong's actions.
Ignoring him, Zhao Xiaosong walked straight to the edge of the grass, crouched down, and reached out to check for signs of breathing.
She was alive but had simply fainted.
He thought for a moment before grabbing her arm and pulling her out of the bushes with force.
He laid her flat on the ground and took out his lighter to ignite a flame, illuminating her face clearly.
It was an unfamiliar face.
He had never seen her before.
Furrowing his brow as he looked at her, confusion filled his mind.
Who was she? Why was she lying in the grass?
He pondered this while checking her body again and found that aside from the injury on her forehead, there were no other visible wounds.
"What should we do, Young Master?" The driver approached and asked as he looked at Li Xiumei lying on the ground.
"Let's get her into the car first," Zhao Xiaosong replied in a deep voice.
"Understood." The driver nodded and then bent down to help Zhao Xiaosong lift Li Xiumei into the black sedan.
Zhao Xiaosong took his seat in the front passenger position while Li Xiumei lay in the back seat.
"Young Master, where are we going now?" the driver asked.
"To the village ahead," Zhao Xiaosong replied.
"Understood." The driver acknowledged and then started the engine, driving the black sedan forward.
Zhao Xiaosong turned his head, looking through the rearview mirror at Li Xiumei, who was lying in the back seat. He felt an odd sense of familiarity in her features. It was as if he had seen her somewhere before. However, after thinking for a long time, he couldn't recall where that might be.
He shook his head, dismissing the thoughts swirling in his mind, and turned to gaze out the window at the scenery outside. The night was hazy, and the stars sparkled brightly. A crescent moon hung in the sky like a sickle, casting a gentle glow.
The car traveled through the night, and after about half an hour, they finally entered the village. By this time, there were hardly any people around; every household had their doors tightly shut, resting for the night. The car came to a stop at the village entrance.
"Young Master, we've arrived," the driver said as he turned to Zhao Xiaosong.
"Mm." Zhao Xiaosong nodded in response and opened the car door to get out. After the driver parked the car securely, he also exited.
Together, they lifted Li Xiumei from the vehicle and supported her arms as they walked step by step into the village. The night was dim, but the moonlight was bright.
A black sedan slowly drove along the country road, drawing curious glances from passing villagers.
"Look over there! What is that?" someone exclaimed in surprise.
"I don't know; it looks like a black sedan," another person speculated.
"A black sedan? What's that?" someone asked curiously.
"It's a kind of four-wheeled black box," an informed villager explained.
"Wow, it looks really impressive," someone said enviously.
