"Let me tell you, you must not trust that woman. Do you know what those Demons we just encountered are all about?" Ling Er whispered to Wang Niu.
Wang Niu was momentarily stunned, feeling a bit confused. What did this have to do with the woman?
Unexpectedly, in that brief moment, Ling Er turned to me and said, "Because those Demons were summoned by her."
Just as Ling Er finished speaking, the woman walked toward us. Seeing her approach, Ling Er looked at her with a puzzled expression.
The woman's demeanor was remarkably calm, as if she hadn't heard Ling Er's earlier words. Her gaze remained fixed on Ling Er.
Ling Er felt a bit awkward as the woman smiled lightly and said, "I know you harbor resentment toward me, but some things shouldn't be said carelessly. Those Demons were not summoned by me; they were summoned by you. You should be aware of that."
Upon hearing the woman's words, Ling Er's expression changed dramatically. She turned sharply to Wang Niu, whose face was filled with confusion. Ling Er thought Wang Niu had misunderstood her and quickly explained, "It really wasn't me! I would never do something like that!"
Wang Niu looked at Ling Er, clearly starting to believe the woman's words. Ling Er grew anxious and hurriedly reiterated to Wang Niu, "It truly wasn't me!"
Seeing that Wang Niu's expression remained unchanged, she insisted again, "It really wasn't me!"
Then, as if angered, Ling Er stormed out. Wang Niu looked worried and turned to the woman, asking, "Ling Er just left like that; she won't get into trouble, will she?"
The woman watched Ling Er's disappearing figure and shook her head at Wang Niu. "Don't worry; she won't get into trouble because she won't leave."
Wang Niu felt curious at that moment and looked at the woman as if asking why.
The woman smiled and glanced toward the door. Just then, Ling Er reappeared, holding two pieces of prey in her hands. Upon seeing them, she wore an awkward expression and smiled at them. "You must be hungry; I brought you something to eat."
After saying that, Ling Er began her life anew.
Wang Niu was taken aback; what was going on? He looked at the woman again and saw her smiling at him.
"What’s happening?" he asked the woman.
The woman smiled and replied, "Didn’t I tell you before? Ling Er will come back because she never really left."
Hearing this, Wang Niu was even more confused. What did that mean?
The woman didn’t elaborate further. She walked over to Ling Er and said, "Let me help you."
Ling Er's face turned a bit awkward, but she nodded and continued with her work.
Wang Niu felt frustrated. He wanted to join them, but both women pushed him away.
He watched as Ling Er and the woman prepared the prey. After a while, they set up a fire and placed the prey over it. Soon, a delicious aroma wafted through the air. Wang Niu took a deep breath; the scent was indeed rich and enticing.
"That smells amazing!" Wang Niu exclaimed involuntarily.
The woman brought over a roasted piece of prey and offered it to Wang Niu, saying, "Aren't you hungry? Go ahead and eat."
Wang Niu was momentarily stunned. Just as he was about to respond, Ling Er also brought over a piece of roasted prey and placed it in front of him, saying, "You should eat too."
Looking at the two pieces of prey in front of him, Wang Niu felt even more surprised. For a moment, he didn’t know what to do.
The woman and Ling Er were watching him closely, seemingly waiting for him to choose one.
Feeling awkward, Wang Niu quickly grabbed both pieces. To his surprise, Ling Er and the woman became angry with him.
What had he done to upset them?
"What’s wrong with you two?" Wang Niu asked in confusion.
Ling Er and the woman ignored him.
This left Wang Niu feeling quite frustrated. Surely he hadn’t done anything wrong?
"What’s going on? I shouldn’t have done anything wrong," he said awkwardly while looking at Ling Er and the woman.
The atmosphere suddenly grew tense and silent.
The woman and Ling'er were silent, but suddenly the woman stood up and walked outside. Wang Niu was momentarily stunned and wanted to follow her, but at that moment, Ling'er also stood up, which made Wang Niu feel very frustrated. He watched as the woman and Ling'er moved away.
His gaze followed them closely.
What were they going to do? He saw the woman and Ling'er step outside, tilting their heads as if looking at the moonlight. The moon was exceptionally bright, almost like daytime. The light shone down on the woman and Ling'er, enveloping them in a faint black mist that rose into the sky. In an instant, the sky darkened again. Wang Niu felt a tremor in his heart; something must be happening.
At that moment, a wolf's howl echoed through the surroundings. He looked around and saw shadows appearing everywhere—those were the wolves.
Wang Niu instinctively took a few steps back. How could these wolves have arrived so suddenly?
The woman and Ling'er seemed unaware of the danger, continuing to keep their eyes closed. This made Wang Niu's heart race; what if the wolves charged down and harmed them?
He glanced around for something to protect the woman and Ling'er with. Just then, he spotted a thick branch nearby. Wang Niu rushed over, picked it up, and positioned himself beside the woman and Ling'er to shield them.
The wolves stared hungrily at them. Wang Niu wasn't afraid; he remained vigilant against the pack. After a while, the sky gradually brightened again. Wang Niu was taken aback as he noticed that the surrounding wolves seemed to have received some command and began advancing toward them. Before he knew it, many wolves had encircled them.
Wang Niu tightened his grip on the branch in his hand, his resolve hardening as he faced the wolves.
Suddenly, one wolf charged at him with incredible speed. Wang Niu didn't react in time and was knocked to the ground by the wolf.
"Ah!" Wang Niu screamed as the wolf bit into his hand. That wasn't all; seeing him fall, more wolves lunged at him, and soon he was pinned down by several of them.
The immense pain overwhelmed Wang Niu, leaving him in agony. At that moment, the woman and Ling'er snapped back to reality. They were startled by what they saw and hurriedly pulled Wang Niu back up.
"Are you okay?" the woman asked anxiously.
Ling'er glanced at Wang Niu before turning her attention back to dealing with the wolves.
At this point, Wang Niu could hardly speak; the pain coursing through him was nearly defeating him. The woman furrowed her brow and began leading Wang Niu inside.
"Sit down quickly," the woman said to Wang Niu.
Wang Niu nodded and sat down on the ground.
Seeing this, the woman also sat down beside Wang Niu, placing both hands on him. She said, "I will heal your wounds shortly, but it might hurt a little during the process. I hope you can endure it."
After hearing her words, Wang Niu nodded and replied that he understood.
The woman then began to act. Suddenly, a lot of black mist emerged from Wang Niu's body, and with it, the scars on him began to disappear.
Wang Niu suddenly felt much better.
After a while, the woman withdrew her hands and helped Wang Niu to his feet. She asked him, "Can you still walk?"
Wang Niu replied to her, "I can. Thank you. Are you okay?"
The woman shook her head. It seemed that Wang Niu remembered something and asked her, "Is Ling'er still outside?"
The woman nodded and pointed outside. Wang Niu looked over and saw Ling'er fighting against a pack of wolves alone. For some reason, more and more Wolf Kings were approaching.
This made Wang Niu very worried. What would happen if something happened to Ling'er? After all, she was there to save them.
"Should we go out and help Ling'er?" worry appeared on Wang Niu's face.
The woman paused for a moment, then looked deeply at Wang Niu and said, "I'll go. You stay inside and don't come out."
The woman stepped out and immediately helped Ling'er.
With the woman's presence, Ling'er felt much more at ease.
She looked at the woman, her face displaying a complex expression. She opened her mouth slightly, but no sound came out.
Before long, the wolf pack was completely eliminated.
Both the woman and Ling'er let out a quiet sigh of relief as they returned inside. When Wang Niu saw them come back safely, the worry in her heart gradually eased.
"Are you both alright?" Wang Niu asked with concern.
The woman and Ling'er shook their heads, saying, "We're fine."
Wang Niu was momentarily stunned. How had the wolf pack suddenly appeared around them?
"What happened with those wolves?" Wang Niu asked the woman and Ling'er.
The two of them were taken aback. The woman glanced at Ling'er, who was also looking at her. After a moment, the woman spoke first, "We were just as surprised as you are. However, it's all resolved now, so there's nothing to worry about. Let's hurry and rest; dawn is approaching, and we still need to find Uncle Chen."
Wang Niu paused for a moment before recalling their mission. He glanced at Ling'er, as if to say that she probably understood too.
Ling'er looked at him awkwardly and said, "I know what you're thinking. I'll go with you; it's my responsibility too."
Wang Niu was surprised by her words. He looked at Ling'er, who suddenly felt embarrassed and added, "You all should get some sleep; I’ll step outside for a bit."
After saying that, Ling Er walked out.
Wang Niu wanted to say something, but he swallowed his words. The woman looked at him and said, "If you want to go out, just call Ling Er."
After speaking, a hint of sadness appeared on the woman's face. She then walked to the corner. Wang Niu wanted to say something again but remained silent. He also went to the corner to rest. The dawn came quickly; in no time, it was bright outside.
Wang Niu woke up first and saw that the woman was still asleep. Just then, a ray of sunlight shone through, illuminating the woman's face. This made Wang Niu's heart flutter; it seemed that his feelings for her had intensified.
He continued to watch her until she finally woke up. Wang Niu froze for a moment as their eyes met, making him feel a bit embarrassed for having stared at her for so long. He smiled sweetly at her, and she stood up and walked over to him, gently saying, "Why are you up so early?"
Wang Niu rubbed his nose and replied shyly, "I... I couldn't sleep."
"Is that so? We should get going," the woman said to Wang Niu.
Wang Niu was taken aback. Was it time to leave already?
He glanced around the temple and noticed that Ling Er had not returned yet. Shouldn't they wait for her? Just as he was about to speak, Ling Er walked in at that moment and said to him, "I'm back."
Wang Niu felt relieved from his worries and looked at Ling Er, asking, "Where did you go last night?"
Ling Er didn't answer but just smiled. Wang Niu seemed to understand something and said to her, "We should head out now."
Ling Er paused for a moment, seemingly surprised by how soon it was.
She looked at Wang Niu with a complex expression when the woman interjected, "Let's go; it's getting late."
"Alright."
With that, the three of them left the place together.
They walked into a small grove, and after just a few steps, Wang Niu sensed something was off. There was a strange smell in the air.
Wang Niu paused for a moment and said to the woman and Ling Er, "I don't know if you two can smell that."
As soon as Wang Niu finished speaking, the expressions on the woman's and Ling Er's faces changed dramatically.
Wang Niu noticed their reactions and asked, "What's wrong with you two?"
The woman's face turned stern as she looked at Wang Niu and said, "Many people have died around here."
Wang Niu was taken aback by her words. Many people had died?
"What did you say?" Wang Niu asked the woman. She was about to respond when Ling Er interjected, "A lot of people have died here. If I'm not mistaken, there are also Demons here, and quite a few of them."
"What?" Wang Niu lost his composure. He looked at Ling Er and the woman and asked, "Should we continue moving forward?"
His gaze shifted ahead, and suddenly he felt as if something terrifying lay before him.
Ling Er glanced at Wang Niu and said, "Yes, since if we don't go this way, we will still end up here."
