Upon hearing Wang Niu's words, Ling Er couldn't help but chuckle lightly and said, "Who told you I'm a ghost?"
Wang Niu was taken aback for a moment, unsure of how to respond to Ling Er's statement.
Ling Er looked at him helplessly, her expression serious as she said, "I'm not a ghost, but I'm not human either. However, you can rest assured that I won't harm you. Trust me, when the time comes, I will naturally tell you who I am."
Listening to Ling Er's words, Wang Niu felt an inexplicable sense of trust towards her.
He nodded at Ling Er, but just then, a strange sound echoed around them. Wang Niu's heart skipped a beat as he instinctively looked around. Suddenly, a black shadow flashed past his line of sight.
Wang Niu was startled and hurriedly called out to Spirit King, looking in the direction where he had seen the shadow. However, by the time Ling Er turned to look, there was nothing there.
Wang Niu was immediately dumbfounded; the speed was too fast for him to comprehend. He couldn't help but believe that the shadow he had seen must have been a demon.
Noticing his dazed expression, Ling Er became curious and asked him, "What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost."
Ironically enough, he had indeed seen something ghostly. Wang Niu took a deep breath and said to Ling Er, "I just saw a ghost."
Ling Er paused for a moment and glanced around before replying, "Did you perhaps see it wrong? I didn't see anything at all."
Wang Niu shook his head confidently and looked at Ling Er. "I didn't see it wrong; there really was a black shadow that passed by."
Ling Er furrowed her brows, seemingly puzzled. If there were indeed ghosts around them, she should be able to sense them. Yet she felt nothing at all.
Wang Niu cautiously glanced around, and at that moment, it suddenly struck him that he was near Uncle Chen's house. Could it be that the man from before knew he had returned and was following him?
In an instant, Wang Niu's heart began to race. He turned to Ling'er and said, "Ling'er, is that Demon here?"
Ling'er knew exactly who Wang Niu referred to as the Demon, and she reassured him, "Don't worry, with me around, that Demon won't harm you."
Hearing Ling'er's words calmed Wang Niu's nerves somewhat. They stepped into the area together, but as soon as he entered, a chilling wind swept toward him. He couldn't help but shiver. At that moment, Ling'er seemed to sense something as well and warned him, "Be careful, there's something nearby."
Wang Niu had just begun to relax, but upon hearing Ling'er's warning, he tensed up again and became vigilant, scanning his surroundings.
Suddenly, the wind picked up around them, and objects began to swirl in the air, obscuring his vision. This made Wang Niu's heart race with anxiety. Then they heard a series of eerie laughter echoing in their ears, sending shivers down Wang Niu's spine.
"Ha ha, pay with your life," a man's voice rang out from the surroundings.
Wang Niu's heart skipped a beat at the sound; it was the same voice he had heard before.
Before he could warn Ling'er about the danger, she vanished from sight.
In an instant, Wang Niu felt as if he had fallen into an ice cellar. It felt like someone was choking him, making it hard to breathe. Suddenly, his entire body was lifted off the ground and suspended in midair.
"Ah!" Wang Niu cried out in pain.
"Ha ha, you deserve to die," a dark mist began to form before him, slowly taking on the shape of the man he had seen earlier. The man had been waiting for him all along.
Fear gripped Wang Niu's heart as the man's grip tightened around him. Just then, Ling'er appeared behind him. Seeing her reappear filled him with hope as he shouted her name excitedly.
"Spirit, save me!" Wang Niu instantly felt a glimmer of hope.
Spirit's gaze turned cold as the man gripping Wang Niu's neck failed to notice her arrival. At that moment, two balls of fire appeared in Spirit's hands.
Perhaps sensing something, the man quickly turned around. When he saw the two flames in Spirit's hands, his eyes widened in shock, and he attempted to flee.
However, Spirit would not allow him to escape. She immediately hurled the two fireballs at him. In an instant, the flames grew large and surrounded the man. Suddenly, there was an explosion of fire that engulfed him.
Before Wang Niu, a massive blaze erupted. As he stared into the flames, the fear that had gripped his heart slowly began to fade.
"Spirit!" he called out excitedly as he walked toward her.
Spirit responded lightly, but just then, the man, now engulfed in flames, lunged toward Wang Niu in a panic.
Spirit flew over and swiftly pulled Wang Niu away from danger.
"That was close!" Wang Niu exclaimed as he watched the man disintegrate into pieces from the explosion. He couldn't help but pat his chest; if they had been even a moment later, he might have met the same fiery fate.
