After hearing the news, both Feng Ju and I nodded in understanding. Without the bride needing to say anything, we already knew what was going on.
Seeing our agreement, the bride's face lit up with joy as she said to us, "That's great! I knew you would agree. You've saved me, and I'm very grateful. But that wicked man won't let my family go. Can you protect us?" Her small face was filled with desperation.
I nodded at the bride but suddenly recalled something. Wasn't that man dead? How could he still be a threat to the girl’s family?
"We can protect your family, but you need to tell us—wasn't that man dead? Why is he still after you?" I asked her.
Upon hearing my question, the girl seemed to remember something terrifying. She shook her head and said, "No, that's not it. You have no idea how frightening that man is. He has two evil spirits."
Her words left both Feng Ju and me stunned. Two evil spirits?
Seeing our astonished expressions, the girl continued, "Yes, this is something I only dared to find out because I worked in the minister's household. After the minister died, we servants were naturally dismissed by the authorities. But on the day before we left, I witnessed something like this."
Feng Ju and I listened intently as she recounted her experience.
As she was preparing to leave, she suddenly heard a strange sound. Curiosity piqued, she followed the sound deeper into the house. However, as she ventured further in, it grew darker and more foreboding, causing her heart to race with fear. Yet driven by curiosity, she pressed on until she came upon a wooden door.
This puzzled her; after being there for so long, she had never seen such a door before. How could it appear now?
So, she pushed open the door and stepped inside, only to be met with an unbearable stench that made it hard for her to continue. Just as she thought of leaving, she suddenly heard a strange cry—one that belonged to the minister.
Fear gripped her heart. Wasn't that minister dead? How could she still hear his voice? She thought she must have misheard, but then another cry echoed in her ears.
It was still the minister's voice, and this time she believed it.
Despite the overwhelming stench, she steeled herself and ventured further inside, only to be met with a shocking sight.
The minister was indeed dead—no, more accurately, he had two evil spirits haunting him.
At this point in her story, the girl fell silent, clearly shaken by what she had witnessed.
"Did you see who turned this Great Achievement into two wraiths?" I asked the girl.
Upon hearing my words, the girl froze for a moment, then said, "It was an Old Witch. She tied me up and threatened my family, saying that I had to be sacrificed to that minister. Otherwise, she would kill my family."
As she spoke, the girl's expression changed dramatically. She turned to me and said, "We need to hurry and check on them. The Witch might have already brought people to my house. I can't let anything happen to my family. Can you go deal with it first?"
Seeing the urgency on her face, Feng Ju and I nodded in agreement.
Then, under the girl's guidance, we arrived at her home. It was very poor, consisting of just a few thatched huts.
Sure enough, just as the girl had said, we arrived to find an old woman leading a group of people toward her house.
"Look, it's them!" The girl exclaimed excitedly upon seeing them approach, ready to rush forward.
I quickly signaled Feng Ju to stop her.
"What are you stopping me for? They’re going to hurt my family!" The girl was visibly agitated.
This left both Feng Ju and me feeling helpless. Was rushing in like this a death wish?
"Calm down; we will help you," I said before flying in front of those people. At that moment, they were smashing the girl's home and had dragged her family outside.
My sudden appearance startled them.
"W-What are you?" one of them stammered, fear evident in their voice.
I looked at them calmly when suddenly an old woman appeared behind them, looking quite terrifying.
She was the Witch the girl had mentioned.
The Witch's eyes were filled with malice as she coldly stared at me and said, "May I ask who you are to dare disrupt my master's affairs?"
I smirked slightly and replied to the Witch, "You are not yet qualified to know who I am. Do you realize that your actions are a violation of the Heavenly Dao?"
Upon hearing the words "Heavenly Dao," the Witch appeared visibly shaken, her voice trembling as she asked, "What exactly are you? How do you know about the Heavenly Dao? You are not an ordinary person, are you?"
I did not respond to the Witch but glanced at the others around us. Suddenly, a ripple of energy surged through the air, and those people were lifted off the ground, suspended in mid-air.
The Witch's face turned pale; it seemed she sensed something ominous and prepared to flee. Noticing her intent, I used my celestial magic to block her escape.
I stepped in front of her, my gaze icy. "After all the evil deeds you've committed, do you really think you can escape?"
Hearing this, the Witch trembled in fear and hurriedly said, "No, you can't do this to me!"
"Can’t I? Do you know about the Heavenly Emperor?" I asked her.
"The Heavenly Emperor? Are you talking about the Heavenly Emperor?" The Witch seemed to grasp something and her eyes widened in shock. "Could it be that you are the Heavenly Emperor?"
I did not confirm or deny her assumption; it was best to leave things ambiguous.
"You must accept your punishment now."
After I spoke these words, I took a step back. At that moment, the sky darkened ominously. Feng Ju glanced up at the heavens and asked me, "Wang Jun, what is happening?"
I looked up at the sky and replied to Feng Ju, "You need not worry; this is the Heavenly Dao."
As soon as I finished speaking, a bolt of lightning split through the pitch-black sky. Instantly, I saw dark energy swirling around the Witch; it grew denser until it formed a thick cable of darkness.
At that moment, more lightning flashed across the sky, and the Witch's demeanor grew increasingly frantic. It seemed she realized something and struggled desperately to escape. However, no matter how hard she fought against it, she could not break free.
Suddenly, bolts of lightning struck the Witch.
"Ah!" The Witch let out a series of mournful cries, and in just a moment, her body was covered in sparks.
"It seems like this Witch won't last much longer," Feng Ju said to me.
I nodded, and just as I was about to respond to Feng Ju, I saw thick smoke rising from the Witch, enveloping her completely.
Then, the Witch vanished, leaving only the clothes she had been wearing on the ground.
Feng Ju stared blankly for a moment before asking me, "Wang Jun, is the Witch dead?"
I replied with a sound of affirmation and walked over. Before long, my brows furrowed; I hadn't expected that this Witch had also consumed Popularity.
"It looks like we need to find the other lingering spirit of that minister. Otherwise, there will be more victims," I said to Feng Ju.
Upon hearing my words, Feng Ju nodded. She seemed to think of something else and said to me, "Wang Jun, I wonder what happened to that spirit in the graveyard."
"Don't worry; it won't survive," I assured Feng Ju.
She finally breathed a sigh of relief. Just as she was about to say something to me, a girl's voice came from nearby. "Masters."
