"Who is that?" I asked Feng Ju, pointing at the woman.
Feng Ju's expression immediately darkened. "She's a ruthless woman; all these Evil Spirits are her doing."
My heart trembled at her words, disbelief washing over me. The woman's demeanor seemed quite kind, and I couldn't fathom how she could be so malicious.
"Is there some hidden truth behind this?" I asked Feng Ju.
Feng Ju nodded, about to speak when a middle-aged man approached the woman, a hint of desire on his face.
"Who is that?" I inquired, gesturing towards the man.
"This is the head of this household," Feng Ju replied. "Initially, there were quite a few Concubines in this family."
Understanding began to dawn on me; was it a rivalry among women for favor?
Feng Ju glanced at me before shifting her gaze to another Evil Spirit. "Do you know who that woman is?"
I looked at the woman Feng Ju was pointing to and blinked in confusion. "Who is she?"
With a sigh, Feng Ju explained, "That Evil Spirit was the Madam of this household. Beside her are the Second Concubine, Third Concubine, and Fourth Lady."
I was taken aback. If that were the case, who was the woman causing all this chaos? Could she really have killed everyone?
"This woman is named Yan Yu; she was bought as a Concubine by the head of the household. At first, she was very good at disguising herself. Everyone thought she was just a fleeting novelty for him, so the other ladies didn't pay her much attention. They focused all their efforts on their own positions. Thus, this Concubine began to plot against them. At that time, the Madam was already pregnant. Although the head of the household was quite lecherous, he treated his bloodline with utmost care and provided the best for the Madam. However, during childbirth, something went terribly wrong; she suffered severe bleeding and complications that even the midwife couldn't resolve. Tragically, the child inside her perished. When the head of the household learned of this, he flew into a rage and questioned all present Concubines. They all lowered their heads in fear of his wrath. Seeing them deny any wrongdoing only fueled his anger further, prompting him to instruct the steward to investigate."
"The investigation revealed the problem. Before giving birth, Madam had consumed herbal tea prepared by the Second Concubine and the Third Concubine, which was found to be tainted. Upon learning this, the Master immediately captured the Second Concubine and the Third Concubine, subjecting them to severe torture. However, they were not responsible for the incident and naturally would not admit to it; acknowledging their guilt would mean certain death. The Master then imprisoned them. One night, footsteps echoed through the prison.
Upon hearing the footsteps, the Second Concubine and the Third Concubine became alert, realizing that at this hour, no one should be visiting the prison. The only possibility was that someone intending to frame them had arrived.
As the footsteps drew closer, their anxiety intensified. Suddenly, a pair of feet stopped in front of them. They looked up at the visitor, astonished.
"You... how did you get here?" A hint of pallor appeared on the Second Concubine's face as she seemed to recall something.
"Wait, did you cause Madam to lose her child?" The Third Concubine confronted the Concubine directly.
Upon hearing the Third Concubine's accusation, a glint of malice flashed in the Concubine's eyes. She smirked darkly and said, "Third Concubine, you are indeed sharp. However, since you both are aware of this matter now, I cannot let you live any longer. You will accompany Madam's child."
With that, the Concubine poisoned both the Second Concubine and the Third Concubine.
The next day, when someone came to check on them, they found both dead in their cell. No one paid much attention at first; everyone assumed it was a suicide.
However, events did not cease with this incident; instead, they escalated. Madam became increasingly distraught over losing her child. One night, she inexplicably wandered barefoot into a secluded part of the courtyard where there was a deep well. From within came faint cries of a baby. Drawn by the sound, Madam approached. Unbeknownst to her, a pair of hands appeared behind her, causing her to fall into the well.
On the third day, servants discovered Madam's body. Whispers circulated that her grief over her child's death led to such a tragic end.
Time passed without further incidents until another shocking event occurred.
The Fourth Lady suddenly died from fright. Her maid reported that one night while getting up to relieve herself, she encountered the spirits of Madam along with the Second and Third Concubines seeking revenge. In her panic to escape, she collided violently with the door and died from the impact.
These occurrences had already instilled a sense of dread among everyone; now with this new incident spreading fear throughout the household, all remaining ladies were terrified as well—their ranks diminished by death.
Now only the Concubines remained. The Master had no choice but to elevate one of them to First Wife status. Ever since this Concubine took on that role, strange happenings ceased."
Moreover, the male master had never sought out women, leading everyone to suspect that this Concubine might possess some form of witchcraft. As a result, some individuals secretly ventured into the room where the Concubine resided. To their surprise, they discovered that this Concubine was indeed no ordinary person but a woman skilled in sorcery.
What terrified them even more was that the Concubine looked nothing like what they had seen before; her face was covered with a layer of human skin, and her true appearance was quite horrifying.
They were all frightened and thought about fleeing, but the Concubine noticed them. They did not escape her grasp; instead, she captured them one by one and killed them to silence them.
No one knew about this incident.
When Feng Ju finished speaking, all the Evil Spirits turned to look at me, their eyes filled with grievance.
My heart trembled for a moment. Were we supposed to stop them?
"Wang Jun," Feng Ju called out as she noticed my dazed expression.
I snapped back to reality and looked at Feng Ju, feeling a sense of conflict within me.
"What's wrong?" Feng Ju asked with concern.
"Feng Ju, let's not interfere; let them take their revenge," I said to her.
Feng Ju seemed surprised by my words but nodded in agreement. We continued to observe the actions of the Evil Spirits. The male master appeared to be very fond of this Concubine, lingering with her for quite some time before finally leaving.
"Who is it?" Just as the male master had not walked far, the Concubine suddenly shouted into the surroundings.
Upon hearing her words, the Evil Spirits immediately rushed down and surrounded her, their eyes revealing a sinister expression.
The Concubine's mouth split open, revealing a hint of a cruel smile; it was clear that she was not afraid of these Evil Spirits.
"I ask who it is; it turns out to be you worthless bunch. Very well," the Concubine's demeanor was exceedingly arrogant.
"Heh heh, you're about to meet your end and still talking," suddenly, Madam approached the Concubine with an air of hostility. Just as she raised her hand to strike the Concubine, the Concubine unexpectedly unleashed Evil Arts.
"That Madam looks a bit weak," Feng Ju said.
I shook my head and replied, "You're mistaken. Don't forget, today is the Ghost Festival. Perhaps this Concubine has been struck."
No sooner had I spoken than Feng Ju and I witnessed the Madam deliver a sharp slap to the Concubine.
"See? I told you, this Concubine is particularly vulnerable on this day," I remarked.
Feng Ju seemed somewhat surprised, and then we saw the malevolent energy from the Concubine being absorbed by the Madam. Now, the Concubine appeared just like an ordinary person.
"What are you going to do?" Fear flashed across the Concubine's face.
"Heh, what do you think we're going to do? Naturally, we seek revenge. You have harmed so many of us; shouldn't you experience some pain?" the Madam coldly replied to the Concubine.
