I looked at the Heavenly Emperor, who appeared to be deep in thought. It seemed I already knew something, but I still wanted to hear it from him.
"I believe you should know about the Feast of Demons," the Heavenly Emperor asked me.
This made me a bit awkward; I truly had no knowledge of the Feast of Demons. I could only shake my head in response. The Heavenly Emperor continued, "The Feast of Demons was once the king of the demon realm. To speak of him, he was quite a character, but he had a weakness for women. He had many Demon Consorts in the demon realm, yet the position of Demon Empress remained vacant, reserved for his deceased wife. Back then, the demon realm was in chaos."
"The demons were all vying for the title of king, but there were also innocent demon citizens who had long been oppressed by those malicious demons. Seeing this, the Feast of Demons felt immense sorrow and decided to become the king so that these citizens could live peacefully in the demon realm."
"At that time, the Feast of Demons was very weak and could not compete with those rampant demons. By chance, he met the princess of the Evil Spirit Clan, who happened to be his deceased wife."
"When the princess saw the Feast of Demons, she fell in love with him instantly. He was considered the most handsome man in the demon realm at that time. They quickly fell in love. Upon learning that he wished to unify the entire demon realm, she entrusted her family's power to him, making the entire Evil Spirit Clan his ally."
"This gesture deeply moved the Feast of Demons. To show his gratitude, he married her and regarded her as his true wife. In the demon realm, a wife held great significance; it represented a lifelong commitment between two people."
"The princess was equally touched by his actions and ensured that the entire Evil Spirit Clan supported him. During their campaigns, she stood by his side."
"After one battle, the Feast of Demons established a significant presence in the demon realm but had not yet become king. However, after this victory, he grew very confident. The princess's support meant a lot to him; her position became even more important in his heart."
"Having slain half of the demons and monsters, he gained great fame in the demon realm. Many came to know him as well as respect him among the demon citizens. Some even chose to ally with him, increasing his power significantly."
"With this newfound strength backing him up, he no longer feared anyone and eliminated all those with ulterior motives. After their disappearance, he became known as the Demon Lord."
"Many were thrilled at this development; however, unbeknownst to them, the princess fell ill with a strange disease—one that led only to death once contracted. When the Feast of Demons learned of this, he became frantic and searched everywhere for someone who could cure her illness, but no one in the demon realm could help."
"As time passed slowly, the princess succumbed to her illness. When the Feast of Demons found out, he seemed to change entirely and began taking numerous Demon Consorts. Yet none could truly win his affection. Eventually, one particular Demon Consort caught his attention—she was none other than the mother of the New Demon Lord. The reason he became interested in her was that she bore a striking resemblance to the princess."
"After her arrival, he began neglecting other Demon Consorts. Consequently, they grew resentful towards this woman who disrupted their balance and secretly plotted against her. Due to his constant favoring of this new consort, she became pregnant but kept it a secret out of fear for her child's safety from those plotting against her."
"In an unfortunate turn of events, this Demon Consort was harmed and lost her face—the very feature that resembled that of the princess—leading to her rapid fall from grace. Following this incident, he resumed taking more consorts while those who once targeted her finally left her alone."
Without the attention of those people, the Demon Consort let out a sigh of relief and focused on nurturing her pregnancy. As the days passed, her belly grew larger, signaling that she was nearing her time to give birth. The thought filled her with fear, for there was not a single servant in her palace, leaving her feeling insecure. Thus, one night, she secretly made her way to the chamber of the Feast of Demons. At that moment, the Feast of Demons had just returned from drinking, his mind clouded with thoughts of the princess. When he saw the Demon Consort there, he erupted in anger because the Demon Consort's face had vanished from his memory. His feelings for the princess could not find an outlet, and he unleashed his fury upon the Demon Consort. In that instant, she suddenly went into labor, causing her to panic. She pleaded with the Feast of Demons not to harm her child. Upon realizing this, he immediately summoned someone to assist in delivering the baby.
With the help of the Midwife, the child was born safely. When the Feast of Demons saw the child's appearance, he was stunned; the resemblance to the deceased princess was uncanny. Consequently, he regarded this child as the future Demon Lord and showered him with affection, allowing him to roam freely in the demon realm.
However, this affection was solely directed at the child; the Demon Lord held no feelings for the Demon Consort. He ordered her to be sent to the Cold Palace and found another consort who resembled the deceased princess to care for the child.
As days turned into months, the child grew increasingly like the late princess. This only deepened the Demon Lord's guilt, prompting him to provide the best for his son and inadvertently fostering a spoiled temperament in him. One day, as he matured into what would be known as the New Demon Lord, he learned that he was not born of this current Demon Consort but rather that his true mother had been cast into the Cold Palace by the Feast of Demons. Furious at this revelation—after all, she was his mother—he could not comprehend why the Feast of Demons would act so cruelly. Thus, he ventured to the Cold Palace and beheld his mother in a pitiful state. Overcome with rage at her suffering, he vowed silently to take revenge on those who had harmed her.
Gradually, the New Demon Lord built his own power and began eliminating those responsible for his mother's pain one by one. Ultimately, he killed the Feast of Demons. In his final moments, when asked if he had ever loved his mother, the Feast of Demons firmly replied that he had never loved her; his heart had always belonged to the princess. He added that if not for resembling her so closely, it was likely that he would not have survived at all. Enraged by this admission, the New Demon Lord killed him on the spot and ascended as the new ruler.
Upon hearing Taishang Laojun's words, I found myself feeling some sympathy for this New Demon Lord.
"Heavenly Emperor," Taishang Laojun asked me, "would you like to take a look in the demon realm before making your decision?"
I pondered for a moment and was about to speak when Feng Ju nudged me and said, "Wang Jun, perhaps we should heed Taishang Laojun's advice; it might be beneficial to see for ourselves."
I nodded and then asked Taishang Laojun if there had been any unusual occurrences in heaven recently. He shook his head reassuringly. With that settled, Feng Ju and I made our way into the demon realm. It felt surprisingly similar to our world; as soon as we entered, I sensed a powerful aura of demonic energy.
"Wang Jun," Feng Ju remarked, "the demonic energy here is quite thick."
I glanced around before responding to Feng Ju, "Indeed, it's quite potent here; however, it also makes things interesting. Look at how peculiar these demons appear."
The Wind Lord followed my gaze and soon spotted a creature with eight legs busily lifting something with them. For some reason, I burst into laughter at its comical appearance.
"How amusing," Feng Ju chuckled along with me.
As we continued forward, an enticing aroma suddenly enveloped us. I squinted my eyes; it seemed we were being followed by a demon.
I exchanged glances with Feng Ju; he understood my intent as we slipped into a secluded alley.
Just then, a woman's piercing scream echoed behind us.
I immediately turned to Feng Ju, and we both looked behind us to see a nine-tailed fox suspended in mid-air by the spell I had cast.
"So it’s a fox," I said.
"Tell me, fox, why are you following us? Do you have some ulterior motive?" Feng Ju approached the fox with an expressionless face.
"No, you've misunderstood. I mean you no harm. It's just that the scent coming from you is too enticing, so I waited for you," the Nine-Tailed Fox explained.
Feng Ju and I exchanged glances, pondering the scent.
Instinctively, we sniffed the air but detected nothing. Suddenly, our expressions turned cold and serious.
The Nine-Tailed Fox noticed our change in demeanor and was visibly frightened. "W-What do you want? I really mean you no harm."
As we drew closer, the Nine-Tailed Fox seemed to sense danger and said to us, "You can't be from the Demon Realm; you must be from the heavens, right?"
Her words made Feng Ju and me halt in our tracks. I looked at the Nine-Tailed Fox and asked, "How do you know we’re not from the Demon Realm?"
The Nine-Tailed Fox seemed scared of us now and quickly explained, "I told you earlier—I can smell something on you that attracted me. That’s why I followed you. It’s this scent that led me to you."
I furrowed my brow, my expression growing complex. A small Nine-Tailed Fox could discern that the scent Feng Ju and I carried was heavenly.
"Who exactly are you? If you're not honest with us, we'll kill you," I said, my voice suddenly filled with a murderous intent.
Upon hearing my words, the fox's face turned pale. "Okay, okay! Just don’t kill me!" she pleaded.
"Speak," I replied, my expression softening slightly.
"Honestly, I'm just an ordinary fox. If you don't believe me, there's nothing I can do. Only I in this Demon Realm can smell your scent; no one else can detect it. You have to trust me," the Nine-Tailed Fox earnestly explained.
"Is that so?" I warned as I scrutinized her.
"Yes! I wouldn’t dare deceive you! If I were to mess with you, it would be like playing with my own life!" The Nine-Tailed Fox appeared genuinely earnest.
Looking at her earnest demeanor reminded me of something important. I turned to the Nine-Tailed Fox and said, "There's something I need to ask you. If you're not honest about it, I'll kill you."
The Nine-Tailed Fox's face showed a look of grievance as she pouted, her expression filled with sadness. "Why do you keep killing me? I've told you everything!" she said.
