The middle-aged man suddenly coughed a few times, and Ruoxi's eyes widened in disbelief as she looked at me and said, "Wang Jun, what happened to my adoptive father? Didn't I heal him with Divine Power? Why is he still in this condition?"
I was momentarily stunned, feeling a sense of helplessness. I immediately checked on the middle-aged man, placing my hand on his forehead. After a while, my expression darkened, and I shook my head at Ruoxi, saying, "It's already in the late stage; there's nothing we can do."
Ruoxi was instantly frozen in shock and asked me why this was happening.
With some reluctance, I explained to Ruoxi that although I was the Heavenly Emperor, there were certain rules that could not be broken. For instance, the middle-aged man had already succumbed to a serious illness, and naturally, he was facing death. I couldn't change the fate of the middle-aged man just because of my status as the Heavenly Emperor.
Ruoxi looked at the middle-aged man with a pained expression. He smiled and said, "Child, don't waste your efforts. Your adoptive father knows you care about him, but this may not be such a bad thing. It's already fortunate that your adoptive father could wait for you to return. Now that I've seen you one last time, there's nothing to regret."
After saying this, the middle-aged man collapsed onto the ground, black blood seeping from the corner of his mouth. When Ruoxi saw this scene, her heart raced as she desperately tried to use Divine Power to save him. However, no matter what she did, the middle-aged man remained in a dying state.
At that moment, sounds of chains rattling came from outside the door, as if something was approaching us.
Ruoxi and I instinctively turned around to see Ox-Head and Horse-Face standing at the entrance.
Upon seeing us, Ox-Head and Horse-Face appeared somewhat surprised and quickly bowed to us. We nodded at each other.
"Are you here to take his soul?" I asked Ox-Head and Horse-Face.
They exchanged glances before looking back at me respectfully. "Yes, Heavenly Emperor. We have come according to the King of Hell's orders. Actually, we are not here to take his soul but to invite him to become a Judge in the Underworld."
Ruoxi was taken aback and said, "So you're saying my adoptive father is going down there to be a Judge?"
Ox-Head and Horse-Face nodded. "Yes, Queen of Heaven."
"That's wonderful! Wang Jun, it seems that my adoptive father has done many good deeds before. If he can become a Judge in the Underworld, that would be great!" Ruoxi exclaimed with joy.
I nodded and stepped aside with Ruoxi to allow Ox-Head and Horse-Face to invite the middle-aged man's soul out.
Before long, Ruoxi and I saw Ox-Head and Horse-Face extracting the soul of a middle-aged man. When Ruoxi saw the man appear, her expression was one of surprise as she rushed to embrace him, calling him "Father."
The middle-aged man looked at her with a loving gaze. "Child, see? What did I just say? We have met again, haven't we?"
Hearing his words, Ruoxi's anger melted away, turning into a smile.
"Heavenly Emperor, Queen of Heaven, we may have to trouble you," Ox-Head and Horse-Face said. "We cannot afford any mistakes with the timing. We hope you can understand."
Ruoxi and I understood that it didn't matter when we would meet the middle-aged man again; it could be at any time. So, we let Ox-Head and Horse-Face take him away.
"How do you feel now? Still sad?" I teased Ruoxi.
Her face flushed as if she realized something. She looked at me and said, "Wang Jun, did you already know this would happen? Is that why you didn't tell me?"
I feigned innocence, shrugged my shoulders, and replied helplessly, "I really didn't know. However, we cannot change the fate of those who die naturally. Ruoxi, you must be careful, do you understand?"
Seeing my serious demeanor, Ruoxi nodded and said, "I understand. Don't worry."
I responded with an "Mm," and followed Ruoxi as we left that place and returned to the heavens. Just as we arrived, Taishang Laojun hurried over to us. "Heavenly Emperor, something terrible has happened!"
I furrowed my brows and asked Taishang Laojun what was going on.
Taishang Laojun looked at Ruoxi and me with a guilty expression. "One of the Celestial Children guarding my alchemy room has stolen many elixirs today and escaped to the mortal realm. If he causes trouble down there, it will be a big problem. I can't descend myself because I need to oversee the alchemy room personally. So, I would like to ask the Heavenly Emperor to send someone down to bring back that troublesome Celestial Child."
Upon hearing this, I frowned; this could lead to serious trouble. I turned to Ruoxi and said, "What do you think? Should we go down? It could be like a honeymoon."
Ruoxi paused for a moment and asked what a honeymoon was. It dawned on me then, and I smiled as I explained, "You see, yesterday was our wedding day. To celebrate it, I thought we could go down together to carry out a mission while enjoying ourselves. What do you think?"
Ruoxi's eyes lit up with excitement as she exclaimed, "Really? That's wonderful! Wang Jun, I've always thought the heavenly realm was too dull; I've been wanting to see the mortal world!"
I looked at Ruoxi, her face beaming with happiness, and my heart felt incredibly sweet. I nodded at her, but Taishang Laojun immediately spoke up, saying, "Heavenly Emperor, Queen of Heaven, this absolutely cannot happen."
As soon as Taishang Laojun said this, both Ruoxi and I turned to him, asking why.
"Heavenly Emperor, Queen of Heaven, you must understand that you have just gotten married. If you descend to the mortal realm, those celestial beings will definitely have something to say about it," Taishang Laojun advised earnestly.
I chuckled and teasingly looked at Taishang Laojun. "So what you're saying is that you want to handle your own affairs? I think those celestial beings wouldn’t want to deal with your mess. If word gets out that you can't even manage your own Celestial Child, how could you possibly have the face to stay in the Heavenly Court?"
Upon hearing my words, Taishang Laojun immediately fell silent. Seeing this, I continued, "Ruoxi and I will go retrieve your little Celestial Child. How about you help us cover for those people?"
Taishang Laojun hesitated for a moment, seemingly contemplating whether to agree to my request.
After a while, he nodded and agreed, saying, "Alright, but Heavenly Emperor, Queen of Heaven, you must return quickly."
Ruoxi and I nodded in agreement with Taishang Laojun. Once he heard this, he finally felt relieved and nodded back at us.
Ruoxi and I exchanged glances and shared a knowing smile.
Soon after, we arrived in the mortal realm. The Celestial Child had just descended from the Heavenly Court via the cycle of reincarnation, so it would certainly manifest in the first child who cried out. As long as we found that child, we might be able to locate him.
However, this was quite a challenge since there were simply too many newborns in a single day.
"Wang Jun, look over there! There's a household where a child has just been born; let's check it out," Ruoxi pointed towards a house.
I glanced over and thought it unlikely because that household surely lacked any celestial aura. Still, it couldn't be completely ruled out.
Ruoxi and I approached the house just as the midwife was cradling the baby. We stepped closer to take a look; the child had no trace of celestial energy at all, further confirming my judgment.
I shook my head at Ruoxi in disappointment. She smiled gently and offered me some comfort.
We stepped outside, and as soon as we did, we heard a cacophony of voices. "Have you heard? Lord Li's second wife seems to be having trouble delivering the baby."
"Yeah, it's strange. It's already time for her to give birth, yet the child just won't come. The midwife is in quite a panic."
"Do you think the second wife is carrying some kind of monster?"
"Don't say such things! If Lord Li hears you, he might have your skin peeled off!"
The others quickly fell silent.
This struck me as odd. Could it be that the Celestial Child of Taishang Laojun was somehow in the womb of Lord Li's second wife?
I exchanged glances with Ruoxi and followed the crowd.
Upon arriving at Lord Li's residence, I noticed a stream of celestial energy emanating from within. Ruoxi and I turned our attention to this aura; the outcome was already quite evident.
"Wang Jun might be right here," Ruoxi said.
I nodded and followed Ruoxi inside. The deeper we went, the denser the celestial energy became. Not only that, but clusters of golden light began to appear around us.
We reached the room of Lord Li's second wife, where many people had gathered. Among them were Lord Li and family members of the second wife.
