The old man's tone was very polite, and we didn't stand on ceremony; we simply sat down.
Looking at the table full of delicious dishes, our stomachs had already been growling with hunger, so we wasted no time and began to eat.
After this meal, our relationship with the old man grew a bit closer.
Once dinner was over, the old man instructed the butler to arrange accommodations for us. We did not hesitate, following the old man's earlier words. It seemed that this isolated island was not as simple as we had thought, and the people from the royal mansion appeared to be quite formidable. However, judging by how those people treated children, it was clear that they were ruthless individuals.
And Ruoxi might just be in the area controlled by the royal mansion. If we wanted to rescue Ruoxi, we could only discuss it thoroughly with the old man.
I shared a room with Feng Ju, while Xiaomei stayed with Dumeng Princess.
"What's your impression of this old man?" Since I had something on my mind, neither Feng Ju nor I could sleep, so I started chatting with her.
After thinking for a moment, I replied, "The old man seems like a decent person."
Feng Ju looked at me in surprise and said, "You think he's decent?"
I paused, unsure why Feng Ju said that, and asked what she meant.
Feng Ju shook her head and pondered for a while before saying, "I don't think things are as simple as we imagine. Think about it: did the old man help us just to repay us for saving his son? That would be too great a cost."
Her words sent a shiver through me; it seemed I had realized something.
"Are you suggesting..." I looked at Feng Ju in confusion, knowing she must have her reasons for saying this.
"What I mean is that the old man might want to use our strength to eliminate the people from the royal mansion. That way, he would become the boss on this island," Feng Ju analyzed seriously.
I was somewhat taken aback. "Why do you think that?"
Feng Ju looked deeply into my eyes and said, "This is a lesson from Tree Sage. You should be cautious about trusting strangers, even if they seem sincere. The old man claimed he didn't sense Ruoxi's presence in his area, but have you considered that all of this is what he said? We haven't thoroughly searched his area; if Ruoxi is indeed there and we followed his advice to come to the royal mansion's territory, wouldn't that tie us up with them? If we don't eliminate the people from the royal mansion, then what use would the old man have for us?"
Her words made my expression stiffen. If that were true, then the old man's intentions were far too deep.
"It seems we'll need to investigate quietly," I said.
"Yes, tonight is a good opportunity because the old man would never expect us to choose this time," the old man said.
I nodded and followed Feng Ju as we waited for the right moment. Just then, footsteps were heard outside the door, and both Feng Ju and I immediately became alert. We quietly approached the door, only to find it was Xiaomei and Dumeng Princess.
We quickly opened the door to let them in.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, looking at them in confusion.
"We're here to tell you something," Dumeng Princess said seriously.
I raised an eyebrow and asked Dumeng Princess what was going on.
"Have you noticed anything strange about Chen Residence?"
Feng Ju and I exchanged glances before turning back to Dumeng Princess, asking her what she meant.
Dumeng Princess continued, "The thing is, have you noticed that there are no women in Chen Residence?"
"What do you mean?" I looked at Dumeng Princess, puzzled. Even if there were no women in Chen Residence, it didn't seem too unusual. Dumeng Princess appeared a bit startled by my reaction.
"After Xiaomei and I returned to our room, we heard the sorrowful cries of women," Dumeng Princess explained.
"What?" I was taken aback. How could there be cries of women coming from Chen Residence? The old man and the butler seemed very gentle.
"It's true. Not only that, but I also sensed the presence of a princess within Chen Residence," Xiaomei's statement left me astonished.
"What did you say?" I looked at Xiaomei excitedly.
"My lord, I felt it. Perhaps the princess's soul is right here," Xiaomei repeated.
"Do you know where Ruoxi's presence is?"
"Yes, it's coming from the back mountain. The princess's aura is emanating from there," Xiaomei said earnestly.
"Alright, let's go now."
I eagerly stepped out of the room, but the moment I opened the door, everything suddenly changed; the surroundings became incredibly bright.
"Oh no, it's Moon Corruption!" Feng Ju's face turned pale, and even Dumeng Princess looked distressed.
Seeing their expressions, my heart sank. What is Moon Corruption?
Feng Ju looked at me and explained, "Moon Corruption refers to the backlash of spiritual energy. The energy from within will turn against its host. If the host cannot withstand this power, it could lead to death. But why is Moon Corruption appearing? It's a forbidden technique in this world. Could someone in Chen Residence be practicing such a forbidden art?"
As soon as Feng Ju finished speaking, both Feng Ju and Dumeng Princess's faces changed drastically, and they collapsed to the ground.
"What happened?" I was startled.
Xiaomei rushed forward to help Dumeng Princess up, speaking urgently, "Your Highness, you need to set up a barrier in this room quickly. The barrier can prevent Moon Corruption; otherwise, they are doomed!"
Upon hearing this, I didn't dare to hesitate and immediately set up the barrier. After that, Xiaomei helped channel energy into both of them. Slowly, Dumeng Princess and Feng Ju regained consciousness. I looked at them and secretly breathed a sigh of relief; that situation had been truly perilous.
"Are you alright?" I asked with concern.
Feng Ju and Dumeng Princess shook their heads, indicating they were fine. Just then, a loud noise came from above us, as if something was passing overhead.
"Don't speak," Feng Ju immediately instructed.
We fell silent right away. After a long while, the sounds finally ceased.
"Moon Corruption has finally passed," Feng Ju spoke first.
"It seems that Chen Residence is not simple after all," I remarked.
"Yes, by tomorrow we must all disguise ourselves. This incident of Moon Corruption will surely make the elder think we are injured. To expose the elder's true intentions, we must pretend to be wounded. Do you all understand?"
"Understood."
After waiting for a while, considering the large number of people, we decided to leave two individuals in the room. Originally, the matter concerning Ruoxi only required Xiaomei and me to handle it, so we chose to leave Feng Ju and Dumeng Princess in the room.
"Your Highness, do you sense the aura of the Princess?" Xiaomei asked me as we walked.
I shook my head; it seemed I really couldn't detect Ruoxi's presence. Xiaomei frowned and said, "That's impossible! I can clearly feel the Princess's aura nearby, and it's getting stronger."
We made our way to the back mountain, and the moment we stepped into it, I seemed to sense Ruoxi's presence. My heart raced as I excitedly told Xiaomei, "You were right! I can definitely feel Ruoxi's aura; it seems to be coming from that direction."
I pointed towards a rockery ahead. Xiaomei looked over and noticed a faint green light appearing on her fingertip. With a flick of her hand, the green light shot towards the rockery. In an instant, I saw wisps of black mist emerging from the rockery.
"What’s going on?" I asked Xiaomei.
"This indicates that the Princess's soul is right here," Xiaomei replied excitedly.
"Is that true?" I exclaimed in excitement.
Xiaomei nodded, and we approached the rockery. At the entrance of the rockery, there was a large stone blocking the way, very conspicuous, as if it had just been moved recently.
"Your Highness, it seems there is something hidden here," Xiaomei said, pointing at the stone.
"You’re right. This large stone has absorbed spiritual energy; it will take some effort to push it aside. Xiaomei, step back; let me handle this," I said to her.
