As the colorful mist dispersed before us, we found ourselves at Paper Mache Street, the very place I had visited with Captain Wu before.
"Is this Paper Street?" I asked, feeling a sense of caution as I looked at the suddenly appeared location.
Ruoxi turned to me and said, "No, this is Paper Mache Street. It has existed for a while now; you should know that. However, there is a special power here that the Ghost Gate Cult cannot contend with, which is why it hasn't been destroyed."
"Exactly. Plus, the energy here is abundant and perfect for us to stay in. We can also keep those people safe here," a child said, having appeared by my side without me noticing.
"What exactly is this place?" I asked, looking at the child in confusion.
The child exchanged a knowing glance with Ruoxi and smiled before saying, "It's a mysterious place."
"Let's go. The people inside have been waiting for us for a long time," Ruoxi said.
Seeing Ruoxi step inside, I followed closely behind. Once we entered Paper Mache Street, I noticed something strange again—the colorful mist had returned behind us.
"Don't worry; that's just the barrier closing," Ruoxi explained as she turned to look at me.
I understood then and continued forward. Ruoxi seemed very familiar with the area and led us directly to the shop we had visited before among the many stalls.
Just in time, the paper effigy Boss was waiting for us at the entrance. Upon seeing us, his eyes lit up as he hurriedly brought out five cups of tea.
"What is this?" I asked, looking at the tea that the paper effigy Boss presented.
The dark liquid was topped with a greasy layer that gave it an unappetizing appearance.
"This is welcoming tea. You are guests, so naturally you must drink it; otherwise, you won't be welcomed here," the paper effigy Boss said in a suddenly strange tone.
I was taken aback, feeling uncomfortable inside. Just as I hesitated, I was surprised to see Ruoxi pick up one of the cups and drink it down without hesitation.
The Paper Offering Boss nodded in satisfaction and turned his gaze toward me, saying, "Little brother, it seems your memory hasn't recovered yet."
His words made my heart skip a beat; it felt as if the Paper Offering Boss knew everything that was happening.
"Just drink it. He won't harm us. We still have to stay under his roof for a while," Ruoxi said gently, looking at me.
I glanced at Ruoxi and then picked up the tea from the Paper Offering Boss's hand, drinking it down. Captain Wu and the child followed suit, leaving only one cup remaining.
The Paper Offering Boss's gaze fell back on me, indicating that I still had another cup to drink.
Confused, I looked at him and asked, "Haven't I already had one cup? Why another?"
Ruoxi nudged me slightly, giving me a discreet look that urged me not to ask too many questions and just drink.
I nodded and lifted the tea again, swallowing it down. Only then did the Paper Offering Boss smile and say, "Let me arrange a place for you to stay. Follow us."
With that, the Paper Offering Boss led us inside. How could so many people possibly live in such a small place?
As I pondered this, I was met with an astonishing sight.
It was an enormous space, like a small world where everything existed.
I couldn't help but be stunned; I never expected that such a world was hidden within the tiny Paper Offering Shop.
"This is the Magic Abode," Ruoxi whispered in my ear.
"Magic Abode?" I blinked in surprise. Ruoxi nodded and explained further, "It's an inn, but not an ordinary one."
Her words stirred a sense of curiosity within me.
At that moment, the Paper Figure Boss turned away, and Ruoxi stopped talking to me, pointing at a row of houses in front of us. "That is where you will be staying. You can settle down here without worrying about the Ghost Gate Cult coming after you."
After saying this, the Paper Figure Boss left.
"Ruoxi, is this Paper Figure Boss a human or a ghost?" I couldn't help but ask.
Upon hearing my question, Ruoxi chuckled lightly and replied, "He is naturally a human, but not like ordinary humans. He has existed since the time of Pangu's creation of the world. He doesn't belong to the Three Realms; he is a Mysterious Traveler."
"Mysterious Traveler?"
Ruoxi nodded and continued, "This Mysterious Traveler has great abilities, but he also has his own struggles. He helped you before."
I nodded in agreement. "It seems he knows some things about me. Before anything happened in the human realm, he said some inexplicable things to me."
"That's right. He was trying to show goodwill towards you. He can open the barrier here and let us in; it's all to curry favor with you."
With that, Ruoxi pointed to the place where the Paper Figure Boss had indicated earlier. "Let's go inside and get settled first. I'll explain everything slowly."
I responded with an "okay," and after helping Captain Wu settle everyone in, I made my way to Ruoxi's room.
As I entered, I immediately sensed something was off. The room's decor seemed normal at first glance, but in an instant, it transformed into a completely different scene.
"Ruoxi, are you there?" I cautiously looked around.
Ruoxi did not respond. With each step I took, the surroundings changed; it felt more like images were being projected rather than a stable environment, and these images were strangely familiar.
As I gazed at these scenes, my mind and body began to react intensely.
Especially when I saw images of torment and suffering, I felt a wave of pain surge through me.
"Wang Jun, do you remember this scene?" Ruoxi's voice came through.
I shivered slightly at the sound of "Wang Jun."
Why did that one word make my entire body feel like it was on fire? It was as if someone had called me that before.
At that moment, my head began to throb violently, and unfamiliar images flooded into my mind.
In just a short while, I was drenched in sweat.
"Wang Jun, you need to come back. The world is waiting for you to save it," Ruoxi's voice echoed again.
Instantly, a surge of power coursed through my body, lifting everything around me as if a male voice had entered my mind: "Wang Yan, you need to return."
As soon as those words fell, I heard the rush of wind in my ears. Suddenly, the surroundings returned to their original state; all the windows outside burst open, and streams of gas flew in from all directions, drilling into my body.
In no time at all, I felt as if I were about to burst.
"Ah!" I cried out to the sky.
This state continued for what felt like an eternity until I finally ran out of strength and collapsed onto the ground. Everything went black, and I lost consciousness.
When I woke up, I found myself lying on a bed in a room that was empty. Where was Ruoxi?
Just as I was pondering this, a warm sensation spread across my chest, accompanied by an itchy feeling.
This sensation felt very familiar. I recalled the earlier scene and suddenly had a flash of insight. Without hesitation, I tore open my shirt to look at my chest. To my shock, there were already ten red spots there.
I was somewhat surprised. Was that scene just now a manifestation of inheriting the remnants of a soul?
The child had said that I was the King of the Earth. Previously, I had also heard Ruoxi mention that the soul of the King of the Earth was divided into twelve fragments.
Now, I already possessed ten of them. If I guessed correctly, these ten were indeed the remnants, leaving only two more to gather together.
My heart suddenly became complicated. If I inherited all twelve souls, would that mean the King of the Earth had returned? And what about me? Would I be dead, replaced by the King of the Earth?
As I pondered this, the door was pushed open, and Ruoxi walked in, carrying a bowl of medicine.
"Are you okay?" Ruoxi approached me and handed me the bowl of medicine, urging me to drink it.
I glanced at Ruoxi before shifting my gaze elsewhere. For some reason, my heart felt particularly complicated.
"What's wrong with you?" Ruoxi asked with concern.
I shook my head, feeling a surge of courage within me as I said, "Ruoxi, let me ask you something. If I have gathered all twelve souls, does that mean the King of the Earth will be reborn? What about me?"
Ruoxi paused for a moment, surprised as she replied, "You are the King of the Earth. You are his present life; he is your past life. There is no replacement; you are one and the same. To put it simply, you are one person."
Her words brought me some peace. Suddenly, I felt like I understood something and asked Ruoxi, "Did you know from the very beginning that I am the King of the Earth?"
Ruoxi shook her head and explained, "Not exactly knowing. At first, I felt the call of the king, so I came to see you. But from the moment I saw you, I began to doubt whether I had sensed it wrong because there was not a trace of royal aura about you. However, something that called to me definitely emanated from you. I was hesitant and conflicted, which is why I decided to test you."
