A massive pit appeared before us, stretching a full two meters wide. We had to jump over this pit to reach the road on the other side, and it was the only way across.
Two meters was quite a challenge.
Captain Wu and I exchanged glances before turning our attention back to the large pit in front of us.
"Brother Wang Niu, there's something wrong with this hole; it's called the Perineal Pit," the child suddenly said, his expression serious.
"Perineal Pit?" Captain Wu and I looked at the child in surprise.
The child nodded and explained that this was a pit rich in Yin Qi, much like a black hole. Anyone who passed by would be drawn down by the hidden Yin Qi lurking beneath.
Captain Wu and I were troubled; given this situation, crossing the pit seemed impossible.
The child glanced at us and said, "Brother Wang Niu, don't worry. There’s a way. As long as we can remove the Yin Qi from the pit, crossing it will be easy. By the way, Brother Wang Niu, do you remember that we are your guardian spirits? And what is the essence of a guardian spirit?"
The child's words reminded me of something. I recalled it was the Three Flames and told the child so.
The child nodded in satisfaction. "That's right, it's the Three Flames. The Three Flames are the most potent Yang Qi fire in this world and can burn away Yin Qi. But right now, the Three Flames can't help us."
"Why not?" I asked.
"Brother Wang Niu, have you forgotten? You have two guardian spirits. Right now, only I am here with you," the child explained.
It dawned on me that I had left Xiaomei back at the tent to look after Ruoxi.
"But Xiaomei is taking care of Ruoxi; she can't come," I sighed.
At that moment, the child's expression changed strangely, and their body slowly began to float into the air. I was startled for a moment but quickly reacted and tried to pull the child down. To my surprise, the force holding onto the child was incredibly strong, and I couldn't move them at all. Just as I thought it was the power of the Ghost Gate Cult, I heard Xiaomei's laughter beside me. Realizing what was happening, I exclaimed, "Is this really fun? What are you doing at a time like this?"
As soon as I finished speaking, Xiaomei appeared beside us.
"When did you attach yourself to Brother Wang Niu?" the child asked, returning to normal.
"Right when you all entered the basement," Xiaomei shrugged her shoulders with an innocent look on her face.
"Has Ruoxi recovered?" I asked Xiaomei eagerly.
Xiaomei nodded and transformed into a cloud of black mist that entered my shoulder's Three Flames. Seeing this, the child also turned into a black mist and entered my right shoulder. Moments later, I saw the Three Flames appear on my shoulder, rising up and pressing against the large hole.
In an instant, both Captain Wu and I felt vibrations beneath our feet.
Captain Wu looked at me in terror and said, "Little brother, this place won't collapse, will it?"
I glanced at the ground and then around us; it seemed there was no major issue. I reassured Captain Wu, "Don't worry, it won't. The child and Xiaomei are absorbing the Yin Qi from the Perineal Pit. It will be fine soon."
While Captain Wu and I were talking, the Three Flames grew increasingly vigorous.
The Yin Qi hidden in the cave began to emerge, drawn into the Three Flames.
After a while, the Yin Qi from the Perineal Pit was completely absorbed by the flames. Xiaomei and the child flew out from within the Three Flames and stood beside Captain Wu and me, both looking quite satisfied.
"What happened to you two?" I asked in confusion as I looked at Xiaomei and the child; they appeared as if they had just eaten their fill.
"Ha ha, Brother Wang Niu, we are converting the Yin Qi from the Perineal Pit into power for ourselves," the child said, patting their round belly.
"Power?" I looked at the child in surprise.
The child nodded, and Xiaomei continued, "The Yin Qi in this Perineal Pit has been stored for thousands of years. The power contained within it is immense. Once we absorb it, we can naturally convert it into our own strength, and you will benefit as well."
"Now that we've dealt with the Yin Qi in the Perineal Pit, let's think about how to get through," Captain Wu interjected.
"Isn't that easy? I can carry one person while the child carries another. This tunnel is only two meters long and not very wide," Xiaomei shot a disdainful glance at Captain Wu, seemingly harboring some resentment towards him.
With that, Xiaomei walked over to me, placing her hands under my armpits. In an instant, my feet left the ground, and before I knew it, I was lifted across by Xiaomei.
"That was fast!" I exclaimed in astonishment.
Xiaomei nodded and said, "Once the twelve red dots on your chest converge, you'll be able to do this too."
After saying that, Xiaomei vanished again. I couldn't help but feel a bit worried; was something happening to Ruoxi? I called out a few times for Xiaomei in my heart, but there was no response.
At that moment, the child returned with Captain Wu. Captain Wu patted his chest, looking relieved.
"Alright, everyone is safe. If we take a few more steps inward, we should be able to see those who are imprisoned," I pointed ahead.
"Yes, the terrain looks like this," he replied.
We continued forward. After going through several obstacles, our hearts began to relax. Just then, an ethereal voice echoed from ahead.
I couldn't help but shiver alongside Captain Wu; that voice sent chills down my spine.
"Little brother, it seems a new situation has arisen," Captain Wu said, unable to resist glancing back at me.
"Yes, we need to be careful." This was unexpected; I thought there were only a few challenges ahead, but it turned out there was another one just before the critical moment.
Captain Wu and I decided to stick close together to prevent any strange things from suddenly appearing.
The ethereal voice lingered for a long time, yet nothing emerged from the shadows.
"Kid, take a look around and see if there's anything nearby," I said, feeling increasingly uneasy, sensing something powerful approaching us.
The child nodded in response and flew around us. After a quick survey, he shook his head and said there was nothing.
I was taken aback; this couldn't be right. The ethereal voice grew closer, as if it were right above Captain Wu and me.
My anxiety escalated until suddenly, a liquid dripped onto my head. I froze for a moment before realizing it was blood.
My scalp tingled with shock as I looked up, only to see a severed head hanging above us—a male's head.
I watched in horror as blood dripped steadily from its eyes, and the ethereal voice emanated from that very head.
"Look up!" I quickly stepped aside, pointing at the gruesome sight above.
Captain Wu and the child followed my gaze, equally terrified, and moved closer to my side.
"This is Deadly Grudge," the child said.
"Deadly Grudge?" I looked at the child, and Captain Wu's gaze fell on him as well.
"Yes, it uses the resentment of the dead to create an ethereal melody, which can lead people to have suicidal thoughts. You two should cover your ears," the child explained.
As soon as Captain Wu and I heard this, we quickly covered our ears, but the ethereal sound still reached us, causing both of us a headache. After a while, I sensed something was wrong and shook Captain Wu vigorously. "Captain Wu, are you okay?"
Captain Wu seemed not to hear me; a look of pain crossed his face as he crouched down, holding his head.
I felt a sense of dread and called for the child. He came over to check on Captain Wu and turned his face to me, saying, "Not good, Captain Wu has been affected by Deadly Grudge."
My heart sank at his words. The child pulled out a very thick rope from somewhere and tied it around Captain Wu. "Hold him down," he instructed. I quickly complied. Suddenly, Captain Wu became agitated, turning his head and opening his mouth wide. He bit down hard on my hand, nearly taking a chunk out of it. I winced in pain.
"Brother Wang Niu, are you okay?" the child glanced at me.
I shook my head, indicating that I was fine, urging the child to find a way to subdue Captain Wu.
The child nodded and cut his own hand, letting his blood drip onto Captain Wu's forehead.
I watched in astonishment as the child explained that this was meant to draw out the Deadly Grudge from Captain Wu's body because it originated from the dead, and his blood carried a deathly aura that could turn Captain Wu into a "dead person."
The child's blood continued to drip for what felt like an eternity. I noticed his pale complexion and grew worried. At that moment, Captain Wu began to change; dark mist appeared above his head, seeping out and reaching the dead head hanging above him. Before long, the dead head began to swell up. The child then withdrew his hand. Upon seeing the swollen dead head, his expression changed, and he immediately pulled me and Captain Wu aside. Then we heard an explosion.
