I quickly helped A Yao up and glared at Xiaomei, loudly reprimanding her.
To my surprise, Xiaomei didn’t care at all. Instead, she began to scold me, “Wang Niu, let me tell you, you’re a married man. Don’t go getting cozy with other women. How can you face Princess like this?”
Xiaomei's words sent a shiver down my spine, and I instinctively released A Yao. She looked just as shocked. Before A Yao could say anything, Captain Wu rushed over to me, pulling me aside and saying, “Little brother, what’s going on? You’re married now? Are you leaving Miss A-Yao behind?”
Captain Wu's voice was a bit loud, and A Yao heard him, her eyes instantly filling with tears.
I looked at A Yao, my heart aching. I wanted to hold her in my arms and comfort her, but I felt it would be unfair to Ruoxi.
After thinking it over, I felt restless and pushed Captain Wu away, retreating to a corner where I squatted down.
Captain Wu glanced at A Yao and followed me over, squatting beside me. He quietly asked what was going on, how I had disappeared for a while and got married. Also, why Xiaomei was mentioning Princess—was I transported back to ancient times?
I shook my head and took a deep breath. After a moment, I finally told Captain Wu everything that had happened during that time.
After listening, Captain Wu took a while to process it all. His eyes widened in disbelief as he exclaimed, “You mean to say you married a Guardian Deity?”
I clarified that it was a Guardian Deity, not exactly a celestial being.
But to Captain Wu, it seemed the same. His expression slowly turned to one of joy as he said, “Little brother, it looks like this world has hope! Just think about how powerful a Guardian Deity’s energy must be.”
I replied irritably, “Don’t think so far ahead. Right now, I’m troubled by the situation at hand. What am I going to do about A Yao?”
Captain Wu paused for a moment before looking dejected again. He shrugged and said, “I don’t know either. Who knew your situation would be so complicated? Why don’t you just go talk to A Yao? You owe her an apology; you should at least say you’re sorry.”
But this wasn’t something that could be solved with just an apology; I had become the bad guy.
I sighed again. Captain Wu pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and handed them to me. “Smoke one; maybe it will help ease your mind.”
I took a deep breath and grabbed a cigarette from the pack, pulling one out. I had never smoked before and had no idea what it tasted like. Back in college, I often saw Chen Ming smoking, who would say that one puff was better than being a living god.
After Captain Wu lit it for me, I took a deep drag, only to nearly choke to death. I gasped for air, tears streaming down my face from the coughing fit.
Captain Wu nudged me gently, signaling me to look up. After a moment, I raised my head and saw A Yao standing in front of me. Her eyes were red, and my heart ached at the sight. For a moment, I didn’t know what to say.
Captain Wu quietly stepped away, leaving space for A Yao and me.
"Wang Niu, shouldn’t you give me an explanation?" A Yao's eyes were filled with tears.
I opened my mouth to respond but felt as if something was blocking my words, leaving me speechless.
"Wang Niu, is she prettier than me?" A Yao's voice trembled with emotion.
I paused for a moment, realizing that A Yao might have misunderstood me. I quickly shook my head and tried to explain, "A Yao, it’s not what you think. There’s a reason."
As I spoke, my voice gradually faded. No matter how I tried to explain, I felt like I had betrayed A Yao.
"Then tell me, what’s the reason?" A Yao's voice grew more agitated. Xiaomei and Captain Wu both turned to listen; Xiaomei seemed ready to approach us but was stopped by Captain Wu.
I stood up to calm the upset A Yao, but she took a step back, her eyes filled with disdain.
Seeing her like this made my heart ache even more. "A Yao, I'm sorry. I truly didn’t mean to hurt you. I'm also helpless; if I don’t agree to marry Ruoxi, I won’t be able to return to this world."
A Yao shot me a scornful glance and walked away. The atmosphere turned tense; everyone fell silent, and the joy we had felt earlier vanished.
Xiaomei approached with a mocking expression. "I really don’t understand why you feel guilty about her. You should feel guilty towards Princess instead. Don’t you realize that you and Princess are meant to be together? And yet you’re getting involved with that woman called A Yao? What a scumbag."
At that moment, my emotions were so complicated that I completely missed the main point of Xiaomei's words and overlooked many details.
"Alright, can't you just be quiet for a moment?" I directed all my frustration at Xiaomei.
Xiaomei's expression was understandably sour as she turned and walked away.
After a while, Captain Wu stood up and approached me. "Hey, little brother, are you hungry? We just brought back some game. Come eat with us."
As he spoke, Captain Wu pulled me and A Yao together. I understood his intention but still didn't dare to look at A Yao.
Xiaomei walked over, and fearing she might say something to provoke A Yao, I instinctively blocked her path. Xiaomei glared at me and said, "I'm not that nosy. I just find it strange that this place has turned into this, yet there are still wild game around."
I was intrigued by Xiaomei's words and asked Captain Wu how there could still be wild game in a place that had been destroyed.
Captain Wu raised an eyebrow, looking quite pleased with himself. "You don't know? There's a place here that's the best of the best, like a treasure land. Oddly enough, even the Ghost Gate Cult doesn't dare to enter this area."
Xiaomei and I exchanged glances before I focused on Captain Wu and asked, "What place?"
Captain Wu's eyes lit up as he pointed upward. "Not far from here. After we finish eating, I'll take you there."
I nodded. After Captain Wu distributed the food and was about to dig in, I thought of Ruoxi. We had been out for quite a while; I wondered if she had anything to eat. I divided the food in half and put one portion into my bag to take with me.
"Wow, looks like you're really sweet on the Princess," Xiaomei chimed in at that moment.
I knew what Xiaomei meant by that, and sure enough, A Yao's face immediately changed.
I felt a headache coming on and sighed, pleading with Xiaomei not to stir things up any further. Captain Wu glanced at A Yao and pulled me aside. "Little brother, why don't we two men go together? We'll leave them here; it's perfectly safe, and they won't get into any trouble."
I nodded but still felt uneasy, so I asked Xiaomei to stay behind to watch over A Yao and Officer Yuan.
Xiaomei looked reluctant but eventually nodded in agreement.
A Yao turned away from me, clearly not wanting to engage. I didn't bother trying to talk to A Yao either and followed Captain Wu out of the cave.
I glanced around and saw no one else, so I spoke to Captain Wu. Once outside, we closed the stone door behind us. Captain Wu took down the compass that was wedged under the stone door and handed it to me.
"Little brother, keep this safe. Uncle Tiger said it's very important," Captain Wu said with a serious expression.
I paused for a moment, recalling the scene of Uncle Tiger being taken by the Ghost Gate Cult, and I asked Captain Wu if he knew where Uncle Tiger had been captured.
Captain Wu's gaze flickered as he turned his back to me, his tone filled with helplessness as he said, "Uncle Tiger doesn't want us to go."
"What did you say?" I exclaimed, pulling Captain Wu around to face me.
He looked at me and said, "Actually, Uncle Tiger anticipated this day would come. So when we parted ways, he told me that you would come looking for us and left you a mark. All of this was what Uncle Tiger wanted us to know. Little brother, I know you have a strong bond with Uncle Tiger, but his words have their reasons. I hope you can approach this rationally."
After saying that, Captain Wu moved ahead, leaving me with a swirl of complex emotions in my heart.
I caught up with Captain Wu. As we headed to another location, I casually glanced at the police station. Even though we were in the back mountains, I could still see the station from my current vantage point.
Suddenly, the number of beasts inside the police station multiplied several times.
I called out to Captain Wu and pointed at the police station. "Our arrival might have alerted the Ghost Gate Cult. Look, there weren't this many beasts in the police station when we first got here."
