"Don't worry, the Old Woman fears your identity and won't do anything to us."
I looked at Ruoxi, who appeared relaxed, and my worries began to ease. I nodded and followed Ruoxi as we walked with the Old Woman.
The Old Woman led us to a cave.
At the entrance of the cave, thick vines hung down, forming what looked like a door.
The Old Woman stopped, and Ruoxi suddenly pulled me back a few steps. "We need to stand back; it would be troublesome if those vines at the entrance hurt us."
I nodded and focused my gaze on the vines at the entrance. "Aren't these just ordinary vines? How could they be so powerful?" I asked Ruoxi. She shook her head and replied, "These are not ordinary vines; they are called Heavenly Vines. They serve as guardians of the Forgetful Cliff. Since it's not the time to open the Forgetful Cliff, the Heavenly Vines are naturally closed. If we force it open, we will face punishment from the Heavenly Vines."
I pondered for a moment. If that's the case, how can we get inside?
At that moment, the Old Woman took out a black stick from her robe and pointed it at the Heavenly Vines at the cave entrance.
In an instant, I saw the stick in her hand transform into something large, resembling a wand.
Dark mist began to swirl around the Old Woman.
I turned to Ruoxi and asked what the Old Woman was doing.
Ruoxi explained that they were defying heavenly rules and forcibly opening the Heavenly Vines.
I was somewhat astonished. Wasn't this against heavenly regulations? Didn't the Old Woman fear punishment? Ruoxi glanced at me as if she understood my confusion and explained, "Although there is punishment, it pales in comparison to the temptation of the Ghost Pearl."
I finally understood. At that moment, all the dark mist surrounding the Old Woman converged onto the wand in her hand, forming a sphere of black light at its tip.
"Go," the Old Women said in unison, and I saw the black light gathered on the staff surge towards the vines at the cave entrance. In an instant, I felt the ground shake violently, making it hard to keep my balance. I glanced at Ruoxi, who appeared completely calm.
I turned my gaze back to the cave entrance, and with a loud crash, the vines were broken apart.
"Come over here," the Old Women turned to us.
Ruoxi looked at me and said, "Let's go. We can return to your world soon."
I nodded and followed Ruoxi inside. The cave was very bright, with floating lights all around. It was filled with boats that looked almost identical. Ruoxi pointed at the boats in front of us and said, "Look, this is the Reincarnation Ship we need to take."
I was taken aback; these boats didn’t seem any different from ordinary ones.
The Old Women told us to wait there while they went to get the Qizi Bug.
After watching them enter a dark area, I asked Ruoxi what a Qizi Bug was. Ruoxi smiled and pulled me onto the nearest boat, saying, "Look here. Do you notice anything strange?"
Ruoxi pointed towards the tip of the boat. I blinked and shook my head, saying I didn't see anything unusual. Ruoxi extended her hand and tapped her index finger on the tip of the boat. After a moment, I saw the boat begin to sway. Not only that, but at that moment, the tip of the boat transformed into a mouth that resembled a fish's mouth but was much larger.
My eyes widened in astonishment as I asked Ruoxi what this was.
Ruoxi explained, "This is called a Demon Ship. Don't be fooled by its appearance; it's actually a demon. There are many kinds of demons in this world. Some are evil, but others are used as tools, like this ship."
I was amazed by her words; I had no idea such demons existed. While Ruoxi spoke to me, the Old Women emerged from the shadows with several black bottles in their hands. Ruoxi informed me that these bottles contained Qizi Bugs, which were meant to feed the Demon Ship so it would work.
After saying this, the Old Women approached us, and Ruoxi instructed me to step back a few paces because they were about to start their work.
The old women took out a few days' worth of insects from a black bottle and tossed several into the mouth of the Ship Demon. In an instant, the insects were devoured by the Ship Demon.
The Ship Demon let out a loud burp.
The old women nodded and turned to me and Ruoxi, saying, "You can go up now."
Ruoxi nodded and took my hand. At that moment, I felt my body become lighter. In just a moment, Ruoxi and I boarded the ship.
I was somewhat worried that the Ship Demon might harm us; after all, it was a creature of the supernatural. However, seeing Ruoxi's confident demeanor eased my concerns.
Once Ruoxi and I were on board, the old women pulled out a talisman from their robes and placed it on the Ship Demon's forehead. Then, they stood at the front and back of the Ship Demon, chanting words we could not understand.
After a while, there was no movement from the Ship Demon, while the old women maintained their positions. Growing anxious, I asked Ruoxi what the old women were doing and why they hadn’t started yet.
Ruoxi made a shushing gesture to me, so I quieted down. After a moment, I felt some movement beneath my feet; the Ship Demon gently swayed.
At that moment, I noticed a faint orange gas emanating from the Ship Demon's mouth.
"It’s starting," Ruoxi's voice came through at that moment.
Suddenly, white smoke rose around us, enveloping both Ruoxi and me and separating us from each other.
"Ruoxi, are you okay?" I felt a surge of anxiety in my heart.
"I'm fine. You'll see something interesting soon," Ruoxi's voice reassured me.
The white smoke did not last long; in less than an hour, it had vanished.
But I was stunned. How had the surroundings transformed so dramatically?
The sky was filled with beautiful stars.
"Ruoxi, where is this?" I asked.
Ruoxi glanced around, her smile growing softer as she said, "This is the path to the Cycle of Reincarnation. Look, the stars around us are called Wishing Stones."
Wishing Stones.
I couldn't help but laugh. Why were there so many wishing things? Suddenly, I remembered what Bule had told me about the wishing fireflies.
I asked Ruoxi if it was really the wishing fireflies that had brought her before me.
Ruoxi looked at me, a flicker of emotion crossing her eyes. After a moment, she turned back to me and said, "No, our meeting was already destined. It was also fated for you to be brought here."
"What?" I looked at Ruoxi in surprise.
A complex expression appeared on Ruoxi's face as she said, "It's possible that when you return to that world, it will no longer be the same world you once knew."
My heart raced as I asked Ruoxi what she meant by that.
Ruoxi fell silent, sitting to the side with her gaze fixed on the distance. My heart began to feel uneasy as I thought of Uncle Tiger and Captain Wu and their safety.
Along the way, both Ruoxi and I fell silent, and the atmosphere became somewhat oppressive. Several times, I tried to strike up a conversation with Ruoxi, but she skillfully evaded my attempts. I decided not to force it, sitting down and gazing into the distance.
After a while, I suddenly sensed something was off. The boat had been traveling for so long; why hadn’t we arrived yet?
At that moment, Ruoxi stood up and walked toward the bow of the ship. I noticed her expression had turned sharp. Sensing the change in atmosphere, I approached her and asked if something was wrong.
Ruoxi nodded and took out a small bottle from her pocket. She poured its contents onto her hand and sprinkled it forward.
With a loud bang, a burst of sparks erupted ahead of us. Moments later, a strange odor filled the air, reminiscent of something foul. I couldn’t help but cover my nose.
“Be careful, someone is blocking our way,” Ruoxi warned.
I was taken aback—someone?
Suddenly, Ruoxi pulled me down to the ground with force, pinning me down. Before I could react, her voice came again: “It’s something from the Ghost Gate Sect.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the once bright surroundings turned dark.
In the distance, I could faintly hear some kind of animal call.
I whispered to Ruoxi, asking what was happening.
Her tone was tense as she replied, “This is the Giant Demon that has awakened from its slumber in the Cycle of Reincarnation. What just happened indicates that the Giant Demon is up to no good. This path of reincarnation is its territory. In the beginning, when the Giant Demon guarded this place, no one could pass through. Later on, it was subdued by the Divine General above and put to sleep within these clouds—right above us. Who would have thought it would be awakened by someone from the Ghost Gate Cult?”
