Suddenly, a deep blue light shot out from nowhere and struck the child, sending him crashing to the ground.
In an instant, the child was reduced to a skeleton, and within seconds, he transformed into a wisp of black smoke and vanished.
I felt a surge of panic rising within me. Just as I was about to rush over, a sudden warmth spread across my shoulder, sharp and painful, causing me to frown. I instinctively glanced at the Three Flames on my left shoulder and noticed that its color had darkened.
Could this mean that the child had already disappeared?
My heart ached at the thought; after all, the child had gotten into trouble for our sake.
"Little brother, look!" Captain Wu's anxious voice broke through my thoughts.
I turned to see the Gate Spirit in the Furnace transforming into a Blue Eerie Flower after absorbing the surrounding infant spirits' power.
The Red-Faced Masked Man extended his staff into the Furnace, retrieving the Blue Eerie Flower. Then I saw a group of people approaching with a Head in hand.
They methodically tossed the Head into the Furnace. Each time they did, a wisp of black smoke billowed from within.
"Little brother, what are they doing?" Captain Wu asked.
I shook my head in confusion, continuing to watch the scene unfold. Once all the Heads were thrown in, a cloud of black mist emerged from the Furnace. The man took this mist out and placed it atop the Blue Eerie Flower.
I noticed sparks of electricity flickering from the hole in his staff, shooting directly into the black mist. Within seconds, the mist was split apart by the electric light, revealing a Black Key inside.
"This is bad; that's the dark key to open the Third World," Xiaomei's voice echoed in my mind.
"The dark key," I repeated in shock without thinking.
Captain Wu looked at me with confusion, asking what I meant by "dark key."
I pointed at the key before us and told Captain Wu that it was indeed the dark key.
After saying this, I called out for Xiaomei in my mind. Instantly, warmth surged through my right shoulder, filling me with joy as I realized I had successfully summoned her.
Sure enough, Xiaomei appeared beside me. I asked her how we could stop the Ghost Gate Cult from opening the Third World.
Xiaomei glanced at the man, and suddenly her gaze turned to me. She smiled lightly, and at that moment, I felt a sense of calculation. The next second, Xiaomei spoke, "Wang Niu, do you know you have something special about you?"
I was taken aback and asked Xiaomei what she meant by that, what special thing she was referring to.
Suddenly, Xiaomei's hand rested on my chest as she looked at me with a strange expression and said, "There is something here that the Ghost Gate Cult fears."
Her words only deepened my confusion. I looked down at my chest, wondering what could possibly be there.
Just then, I felt a powerful wind blowing toward us. By the time I realized what was happening, we had already been swept in front of the man.
In an instant, our limbs were immobilized, as if someone was pressing down hard on our arms.
This filled me with terror; we had been discovered by the Ghost Gate Cult.
The man's dark eyeballs were fixed on us. Although I couldn't see his face clearly, the Red-Faced Mask was right in front of me. For some reason, it pulled my memories back to the day of my grandfather's seventh-day mourning ceremony.
It seemed that this Red-Faced Mask had also appeared then.
"Heh heh, I didn't expect you to come looking for me. This must be fate. After so many years since your Wang family was exterminated, the wheel of fortune has turned," the man suddenly said to me.
"Who are you?" His words stirred a strong feeling within me.
The man crouched down and gripped my neck with his large hand. Instantly, I felt a wave of suffocation wash over me; my face quickly turned pale. When Xiaomei saw this scene and prepared to intervene, the man's other hand seized her and lifted her up effortlessly.
In my hazy vision, I noticed Xiaomei's figure beginning to turn transparent.
The man's dark voice echoed in my ears as if he intended for me to hear it: "Heh heh, it seems that even the once-mighty Wang family didn't pass down any skills to their descendants; all that's left are some worthless things."
As he spoke, I felt as if my head and body were about to separate.
"Little brother, are you okay?" Captain Wu exclaimed anxiously as he drew his gun and aimed it at the man. But little did Captain Wu know that this gun would have no effect on him.
"You ignorant fool," the man said as he tossed Captain Wu into the Furnace. In an instant, Captain Wu's body was engulfed in flames.
Soon, Captain Wu's figure disappeared from sight.
A sharp pain shot through my heart. Could it be that Captain Wu had died just like that?
"No buts, you're next," the man said.
At that moment, the man released me, and I felt a force lifting me up, carrying me higher and higher until I was suspended in mid-air.
I had no idea what was happening below. After a while, I began to hear many voices chanting in Thai, their speed rapid, as if the Ritual Activity had begun.
Moments later, I heard thunder rumbling loudly, echoing throughout the mountain. Not only that, dark clouds gathered ominously, as if the world itself were about to change.
Xiaomei's earlier words echoed in my mind: if this Ritual succeeded, then the Ghost Gate Cult would alter this world. This thought filled me with anxiety, yet I couldn't break free from the energy binding me.
Just then, I sensed a powerful wave of energy behind me. Suddenly, it felt as if something had pierced through my body, causing excruciating pain. In a matter of moments, I lost consciousness, unaware of what was happening as my world plunged into darkness.
When I awoke, I found myself barely clinging to life. Struggling to look around, I realized I was in a desert.
A shock ran through me. What was happening?
Time ticked by slowly; my condition deteriorated further. If no one passed by soon, I feared I would die here.
I kept pleading silently in my heart as the scorching sun blazed overhead, yet there was no sound to be heard.
Despair grew within me. Just as my eyelids began to close, I heard the sound of bells. Was someone coming?
Hope reignited in my heart as I tried to hold on until someone discovered me.
The ringing grew closer, and I could also hear what sounded like horses.
"Hey, look! There's someone over there!" a middle-aged man's voice reached my ears. Soon after, I heard many footsteps approaching me.
Moments later, I felt myself being lifted by someone. I wanted to open my eyes but found a force pressing down on my eyelids. All I could see were shadows swaying before me, and it seemed like someone was calling out to me.
Then, I fell into a coma once again.
A few days later.
“Dad, why hasn’t he woken up yet?” A girl’s voice reached my ears.
My body trembled slightly, and a sharp pain shot through my eyes, causing me to open them wide.
It seemed I was in a house made of mud, neither too big nor too small, resembling the dwellings of ancient times. My eyes darted around as much as possible to take in my surroundings, but my body was unable to move.
“Look, he’s awake. Nili, go help him sit up and let him drink the medicine on the table. Dad will get him something to eat,” a middle-aged man’s voice came from nearby.
My heart skipped a beat as I turned my head to the left; the voice seemed to come from that direction.
Then, I saw a figure approaching me.
“You’re awake!” A naive and adorable girl with two little braids appeared before me.
I was momentarily stunned by her presence. The girl looked so innocent, like a piece of beautiful jade untouched by any pollution.
Seeing me in a daze, she paused for a moment, worry etched on her face. She called out again, snapping me back to reality. Feeling a bit embarrassed, I realized I had been staring at her for quite some time. After all, I was someone with A Yao.
