Could it be that the commotion caused by Raccoon attracted these people?
I discreetly exchanged glances with Captain Wu, who also noticed the group and whispered to me, "Little brother, isn't The Leader He Wei?"
I was taken aback for a moment and looked over again. Although The Leader was wearing a bamboo hat, the facial features still resembled those of He Wei.
Suddenly, the group in front of us came to a halt, and The Leader removed the hat, scanning the surroundings as if searching for something.
Indeed, The Leader was He Wei, but he startled both me and Captain Wu. There was a scorpion attached to the left side of He Wei's face, and disturbingly, it seemed to be embedded in his flesh, making it look quite grotesque.
"Little brother, what happened to He Wei?" Captain Wu asked in confusion.
I shook my head; it was probably some kind of dark sorcery. After all, wasn't He Wei part of the Ghost Gate Cult? A scorpion on his face seemed somewhat normal in that context.
But when Xiaomei's voice echoed in my mind, I realized my thoughts were misguided.
It wasn't some dark sorcery; it was actually He Wei's guardian spirit.
Xiaomei surprised me further by saying that to eliminate He Wei, we first needed to get rid of the guardian spirit on his face.
That meant we had to deal with the centipede first.
Suddenly, I recalled the rooster that I had bought with Captain Wu at the market earlier that day. Wasn't that rooster a natural enemy of centipedes?
I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement. I urged Captain Wu to bring out the rooster and affixed a talisman onto its body before gently patting its back.
The rooster seemed to be injected with adrenaline; it immediately broke free from my hands and charged toward He Wei.
He Wei did not notice the rooster's presence until it suddenly charged in front of him, leaping into the air and flapping towards his face. In that instant, I saw a centipede scurry away from He Wei's face, climbing down his cheek, closely followed by the rooster.
Without his guardian spirit, He Wei looked flustered, cautiously scanning his surroundings.
This was a perfect opportunity. I turned to Captain Wu and said we could make our move.
Before we acted, I handed Captain Wu a few talismans. Then, we dashed out at high speed. I reached into my bag and grabbed a handful of powder. As we approached He Wei, I threw the powder directly at his face.
Caught off guard, He Wei instinctively covered his face in pain and let out a scream. The black-clad figures surrounding him quickly closed in on us upon seeing our appearance.
Faced with so many followers of the Ghost Gate Cult, I felt a twinge of unease.
At that moment, I felt a wave of warmth on my shoulder. I paused—could it be that Xiaomei was about to emerge?
To my surprise, it was indeed a child who appeared.
The child's expression seemed much improved; he gazed eagerly at the cultists before him.
Captain Wu quietly nudged me and said, "Little brother, it seems we won't need to intervene."
As soon as he finished speaking, the child lunged at the cultists. In the blink of an eye, half of them were swallowed whole. This sight startled me.
The child was actually devouring people.
In just a moment, the group was completely annihilated by the child.
Satisfied, the child patted his belly and let out a loud belch as he walked over to me and Captain Wu.
I suddenly noticed that the child was emanating a strange light, something I had never seen before, and the child's condition seemed to be improving rapidly.
I was momentarily stunned, just about to ask the child what was happening when a peculiar force surged through my body. This power coursed through me, creating a sensation of comfort that was hard to describe.
My confusion deepened. Could this reaction in my body be related to the child?
"Brother, doesn't it feel nice?" the child asked.
I blinked in surprise, nodded, and inquired about what had just happened and how it was possible for someone to be consumed.
The child pouted and glanced at He Wei, who was still writhing in agony. "Brother, those I just consumed weren't humans; they were Demon Humans, also known as Ghost Servants. They are little spirits raised by the Ghost Gate Cult, hidden within human corpses, merely taking on human form."
The child's words astonished me.
"Ah!" He Wei let out a heartbreaking scream that drew our attention back to him.
We saw that He Wei was covered in numerous green bubbles of various sizes, densely packed all over his body.
The child's expression changed drastically as he pulled me and Captain Wu away to a safe distance. "Be careful, brothers! He Wei is about to self-destruct. His body is filled with Venom. If any of that splashes on you, it could be deadly!"
Captain Wu and I stared wide-eyed at the child. Just then, a loud explosion echoed in our ears, confirming what the child had warned us about—He Wei had indeed self-destructed.
In an instant, He Wei vanished without a trace, leaving behind only shattered remains. Not only that, but even the surrounding flowers and grass were splattered with green liquid.
The child pointed at the affected plants and exclaimed, "Look! Those flowers and grass are going to wither!"
Captain Wu and I turned to see that the plants touched by the green liquid began to wilt almost immediately; some flowers had even turned to ash.
Captain Wu gasped for breath, patting his chest and exclaiming how fortunate they were.
I took a deep breath as well; if it hadn't been for the child's reminder, Captain Wu and I might have ended up like those flowers and plants.
Seeing us staring at the flowers and plants, the child reminded us that it was time to head to the Ghost Gate Cult's Ritual site because it had already begun.
After saying this, the child pointed at the sky. Captain Wu and I looked up to see that the sky had changed, covered by a layer of eerie red light.
The place where this red light refracted was the peak of the mountain.
Captain Wu and I nodded in agreement and started walking toward the summit.
As we walked, I asked the child what had happened to cause their injury.
The child chuckled shyly, scratching their head and said, "I was careless. I thought I could help my brother solve this problem, so I sneaked into the Ghost Gate Cult's camp, intending to take down the Leader of the Ghost Gate Sect. But just as I got close, the Leader suddenly woke up and spotted me. He struck out with his palm, but luckily I ran fast; otherwise, I might never see my brother again."
"Leader of the Ghost Gate Sect?" I inquired.
The child nodded and described the Ghost Gate Cult Leader as wearing a Red-Faced Mask, exuding an extremely powerful Yin Qi.
I frowned, feeling that something was off but unable to pinpoint what it was.
When we reached the mountaintop, we found a large crowd gathered there. In the center stood a massive Furnace.
I couldn't help but wonder what this Furnace was for.
It didn't seem to match what Director Huang had told us; wasn't this supposed to be the Dragon Head Ritual?
The child's voice reached my ears as they explained that it was a fusion of two rituals. If successful, not only would it rain blood, but it would also turn the hotel across from the mountain into a Hell of Ghosts. At that point, Evil Spirits would be unleashed, and the world would change.
"What do you mean by Evil Spirits being unleashed?" Captain Wu exclaimed, his face turning pale as he looked at the child.
The child's expression was very serious as he nodded and said yes, adding that the souls of the people who had died on that floor of the hotel were used to create the Yinlu Bridge.
The Yinlu Bridge was the key to forcefully opening the Third World, drawing forth the most evil entities from within. This way, they could achieve the alteration of the Heavenly Manual, and at that point, demons and monsters would no longer be bound by the Heavenly Manual, allowing them to act as they pleased.
A heavy stone seemed to press down on my heart. If things turned out this way, wouldn’t it throw the human world into chaos?
This couldn’t happen; we had to stop it.
At that moment, a Red-Faced Masked Man appeared. He held a cane in his hand, which had a gaping hole at its tip.
The man placed the cane into the Furnace.
In just a few seconds, the flames in the Furnace grew tremendously.
I seemed to see a strange smile at the corner of the man's mouth. After a while, a dark blue baby suddenly emerged from the Furnace, sitting upright with its eyes tightly shut, spinning continuously.
"What is that thing?" I asked the child.
