I pondered for a moment, but I couldn't come up with an answer, so I returned to the house.
At the dining table, the atmosphere was extremely awkward.
A Yao was sulking, and since no one else was speaking, I could only lower my head and eat in silence.
When it was time to leave, I intended to explain things to A Yao, but Xiaomei pulled me out. I felt a bit angry and questioned Xiaomei about why she was meddling in my affairs.
Xiaomei shrugged and said, "Wang Niu, I'm your guardian spirit now. Our fates are intertwined; you think it doesn't concern me?"
I was taken aback and asked Xiaomei what she meant. She was her own person, and I was mine—how were our fates intertwined?
Suddenly, a strange smile appeared on Xiaomei's face as she said, "Have you forgotten the first time I resided in your body? At that time, I sensed a peculiar power within you that kept surfacing but eluded capture. It puzzled me until the Three Flames symbol appeared on your shoulder. That’s when I realized it was the sealed power of a guardian spirit. So, I took the liberty of becoming your guardian spirit. I thought the Three Flames would reject me, but instead, we merged. It must be fate. You released me before; now I've become your guardian spirit—it's like we're bound together in life and death."
I looked at Xiaomei with a complex expression, my mind racing with thoughts.
At that moment, Captain Wu stepped out, holding something in his hand. He glanced at the sky and said, "Little brother, it's time for us to set off. By the time we get there, it will be about the right hour."
I nodded, feeling a bit reluctant as I turned back to glance at the house behind me. Xiaomei noticed and snorted disdainfully at me. "Wang Niu, it's not like we're parting forever. Why make such a fuss? Don't get caught up in sentimental feelings; it could affect important matters."
I rolled my eyes at Xiaomei and set off with Captain Wu.
As we passed by the hotel, I instinctively looked up at the tall building and was startled.
A mass of black mist surrounded the hotel, and it was centered around the seventh floor.
I called out to Captain Wu, looking up. Was there another problem on the seventh floor?
"Little brother, look! The back of the hotel seems to connect with the mountain across from it," Captain Wu said excitedly, shaking me as he pointed at the hotel.
I glanced over and saw a surge of black energy erupting from the seventh floor, forming a bridge that led into the mountain. At that moment, an eerie green light flickered on the opposite mountain, creating a strange feeling, as if some cult was conducting a ritual.
Wait a minute, I recalled what the child had said earlier: tonight the Ghost Gate Cult would have a ritual. Had it begun?
Suddenly, I felt a warmth on my shoulder, and moments later, the warmth faded as the child appeared.
"Brother, I'll go scout ahead for you and let you know what's happening in the mountain," the child said cheerfully.
With that, the child transformed into a wisp of white smoke and rushed toward the mountain. I watched as the child disappeared, feeling relieved yet worried, hoping they wouldn't encounter any trouble.
"Don't worry; this child is quite remarkable. They've survived for hundreds of years and are even more capable than I am," Xiaomei's voice came from behind me.
Survived for hundreds of years?
I turned in surprise and asked Xiaomei about the child's background.
Xiaomei gave a faint smile before vanishing.
I was left speechless and continued to follow Captain Wu toward the mountain. Along the way, Captain Wu seemed hesitant to speak.
Seeing his discomfort, I asked him if something was bothering him.
Captain Wu chuckled and leaned closer to me. "Little brother, could you also get me a guardian spirit? If I run into any danger, at least I'd have someone to protect me. Otherwise, I wouldn't know how my life would end."
For a moment, I found myself at a loss for words.
Captain Wu, seeing my troubled expression, chuckled a few times and dropped the subject.
The eerie light emanating from the mountain only deepened our unease, prompting us to quicken our pace.
By the time we reached the mountain, it was already eleven o'clock at night.
As soon as we entered the mountain, a child appeared before Captain Wu and me. His complexion seemed off, and he looked quite weak.
My heart sank; I feared something dangerous had happened to the child. I rushed over to him, supporting him as I asked what was wrong.
At that moment, the child began to sway. I quickly caught him in my arms. He struggled to speak, moving his lips but unable to utter a word.
Panic surged within me as I called out to him several times, but he did not respond. A few seconds later, he simply vanished.
"Little brother, what happened to him?" Captain Wu asked, looking at me with confusion.
I shook my head, feeling uneasy. The child must have encountered something in the mountain that caused this reaction. It seemed that tonight's mountain was indeed perilous; otherwise, how could such a formidable child be so easily harmed?
I handed Captain Wu my Dog Blood for protection and instructed him to walk ahead of me; after all, I had my guardian spirit watching over me.
Not long after we started walking, Captain Wu suddenly grabbed my arm and said, "Little brother, do you think there's something nearby?"
I snapped back to reality and glanced at Captain Wu before surveying our surroundings. There didn’t seem to be anything unusual. I suggested that perhaps he was just overly anxious and imagining things.
Captain Wu shook his head and insisted that ever since we entered this mountain, something had been watching us.
Captain Wu's determined demeanor immediately sharpened my focus, and I cautiously scanned our surroundings. At that moment, I sensed something unusual; a presence was circling around us at a rapid pace.
The source of this presence was a Raccoon.
I quickly pulled out a string of prayer beads and scattered them, striking out in all directions.
I had no idea where the Raccoon was at that moment, as it was unpredictable, but its aura continued to swirl around me and Captain Wu. Therefore, I could only rely on luck to see if I could hit the Raccoon.
As the beads flew through the air, I thought I heard a faint scream from the Raccoon, but it lasted only a few seconds.
My heart remained tense; this meant that the Raccoon might attack us soon.
Sure enough, the aura emanating from the Raccoon lunged at me and Captain Wu like a ferocious beast. I felt it coming and without hesitation threw all the remaining prayer beads in my hand toward it. To my surprise, I saw countless sparks and caught a glimpse of the Raccoon's form.
It was a large Raccoon, its eyes as big as two heads combined.
I took a deep breath and pulled Captain Wu aside. Although the beads had injured the Raccoon, it was still able to move.
The anger radiating from the Raccoon grew stronger, and the dark energy surrounding it increased as well.
I frowned; now that I had run out of prayer beads, dealing with the Raccoon would be quite challenging.
The Raccoon spotted our position and approached us ominously. As it drew nearer, Captain Wu suddenly raised his hand, ready to splash the prepared Dog Blood at the Raccoon.
I immediately stopped him. We only had a small amount of Dog Blood left. If we used it all now, Captain Wu would be defenseless during the Ritual at Ghost Gate Cult, which would put us at a disadvantage.
"Wang Niu, didn't Uncle Tiger teach you the craft of making clothes? Hurry up and cut a wolf out of the fabric," Xiaomei's voice echoed in my mind.
I was momentarily stunned, but then I realized that Raccoon was only three steps away from us. I had no choice but to discuss with Captain Wu and ask him to lure Raccoon away.
Although it was dangerous for Captain Wu, it was also a necessary measure for our safety.
Captain Wu agreed immediately and quickly emerged from behind the rocks. As soon as Raccoon saw Captain Wu, it let out a few fierce cries and lunged at him.
My heart raced wildly, and I was so nervous that my hands and feet trembled uncontrollably.
I kept my gaze fixed on Captain Wu while my hands worked swiftly to cut the fabric.
After a while, a piece of cut clothing appeared in my hands. Drawing from my previous experiences, I managed to do a decent job, though the wolf pattern on the fabric didn't quite resemble what I intended.
"Wang Niu, what are you still dawdling for? Do you want Captain Wu to die? Hurry up and get your blood on the paper clothing; that way, you'll be able to subdue Raccoon!"
