When we arrived, Director Huang pointed at the hotel and asked, "What's going on? Didn't we check into the hotel last night? How could such a big incident happen?"
Captain Wu and I exchanged glances, shaking our heads at Director Huang, indicating that we were not sure.
Director Huang seemed a bit angry and walked into the hotel to check the scene. Captain Wu and I dared not delay and followed closely behind him.
The lobby of the hotel was very tidy, with no signs of disturbance. The only strange thing was the front desk staff, who stood there in a daze, their eyes vacant as they stared ahead. At first glance, they appeared normal, but upon closer inspection, one would notice a large gaping hole in their sides where their insides were missing; they had clearly become mere shells.
The surrounding floor was spotless, with no traces of blood. Even the staff members were impeccably clean; such a method was not something an ordinary person could achieve.
"Hey, look at their wounds; they're all identical," Captain Wu pointed out to me.
I acknowledged this observation and simultaneously recalled the barrier from last night, the child, and that mysterious sound of footsteps. Could it have been the work of the owner of those footsteps?
Perhaps I should check the seventh floor.
I left Captain Wu behind and headed straight for the elevator, pressing the button for the seventh floor. As the elevator ascended slowly, my heart began to race.
With a thud, the elevator doors opened, and at that moment, my heart seemed to stop. I paused for a moment, took a deep breath, and looked out into the corridor.
It appeared normal; nothing like what Captain Wu and I had seen before.
I frowned; it was impossible for such a drastic change to occur overnight. Had something happened during that time?
My mind flashed back to the room I visited last night. Although I had entered a barrier then, the room number was still the same, and so was the layout.
For some reason, my heart raced with excitement as I quickly made my way to last night's room.
I opened the door and stepped inside, only to be enveloped by a chilling air that left me feeling paralyzed.
I became alert, secretly gathering my strength. Just as a surge of power erupted from within me, the cold presence vanished.
Instinctively, I glanced around, finding nothing suspicious. At that moment, footsteps echoed from outside the door, eerily similar to what I had heard last night.
I quickly hid under the bed. Just then, a pair of yellow shoes appeared outside—the feet of a man.
My heart skipped a beat as the yellow shoes drew closer. I shrank back further into my hiding spot when suddenly, a face emerged from beneath the bed. Before I could see it clearly, my vision blurred, and a gust of wind rushed past my ears.
When I regained my senses, I found myself back in the barrier from last night. To my surprise, it was the same child who had appeared before.
"Brother, we meet again," the child grinned at me.
I stared at the child in astonishment, puzzled by their sudden reappearance. Could it be that the barrier could open at any time?
"Brother, if you can take me away from this place, I'll help you solve your current problem," the child said, blinking innocently.
I hesitated, looking at the child with suspicion but remained silent.
The child approached me and nudged me gently before speaking again. "Brother, do you know why people here die? It's because someone has lured all the monsters from the mountains here, and that person is..."
Suddenly, the child stopped mid-sentence, closing their mouth and smiling at me.
"Who?" I asked urgently.
The child's smile deepened. After a moment, they said, "Brother, if you take me out of here, I'll tell you."
Looking at the expression on the child's face gave me an odd feeling. This child seemed to have intentions similar to Xiaomei, both drawn to something within me.
"Brother, I know what you're thinking. You just need to agree; I can reside in your left shoulder Three Flames without any ill intent—just like that sister on your right shoulder," the child said, pointing at my right shoulder with their finger.
The child's words sent a jolt through me. Did they mean Xiaomei was on my right shoulder?
"You said there's someone on my right shoulder?" I asked the child, puzzled.
The child nodded seriously and described the appearance of the sister they mentioned. When I compared it, it was indeed Xiaomei.
Seeing that I hadn't responded yet, the child added, "Brother, do you know about guardian spirits? The Three Flames on your shoulder are your guardian spirits, but they lack a soul; they are incomplete. What you need are those souls. Right now, there is already one soul on your right shoulder, and you just need one more. If you agree, you can truly possess a guardian spirit."

I suddenly felt a shiver; it seemed I had heard Uncle Tiger mention the term "guardian spirit" before.
"Brother, if you don't agree soon, that man will find us," the child urged again, nudging me.
At that moment, I felt a warmth on my right shoulder, and a wisp of black mist appeared before me—Xiaomei had manifested.
"Wang Niu, just agree to this child. They mean no harm and it will be beneficial for you," Xiaomei said with a wink.
I glanced at Xiaomei, then at the child, and nodded. Both Xiaomei and the child looked thrilled, nearly jumping with joy.
Feeling somewhat helpless, I urged the child to hurry; perhaps Captain Wu was anxiously looking for me.
The child stuck out their tongue at me and transformed into a wisp of black smoke that entered my left shoulder, while Xiaomei slipped into my right shoulder. In an instant, I felt the floor shake slightly. When I lifted my head, I found myself standing at the elevator door.
I was momentarily stunned, still trying to process what had just happened when the elevator doors opened, revealing Captain Wu.
He approached me with an anxious expression, circling around me as he asked where I had been.
I didn’t share what had just occurred with Captain Wu, instead asking him what was wrong.
It seemed that Captain Wu remembered something; he grabbed my arm and pulled me into the elevator, saying I would understand once we got to the lobby.
After descending to the lobby, I saw a row of corpses, which must have been the deceased that the officer mentioned earlier.
Captain Wu and I approached the line of bodies, where a forensic expert was examining them.
I glanced at the corpses and noticed that they had turned a dark blue, as if they had been poisoned.
Captain Wu quietly nudged me and said, "Little brother, do you think these guests might have had their life essence drained from them? This is terrifying. Just a moment ago, when I was about to look for you, I saw Director Huang yelling at the forensic expert."
Yelling.
I looked at Captain Wu with curiosity. He nodded and continued, "You have no idea. The forensic expert's Autopsy Report is strange too. They said the bodies aren't dead yet; they still show signs of life. But look at these corpses—where do you see any signs of life? Director Huang scolded those forensic experts thoroughly and ordered them to check again, but it seems like no matter how they examined it, the result remained the same."
Just as Captain Wu finished speaking, Director Huang walked over to us with a very grim expression.
This clearly indicated how serious this case was.
"Little brother, have you found anything?" Director Huang asked me sternly.
I felt a bit awkward and could only shake my head at him. Director Huang seemed ready to explode but managed to hold back his anger. He then issued orders for Captain Wu and me to solve the case within a week, including the previous headless case.
After Director Huang left, Captain Wu wore a mournful expression and said, "Isn't this putting us in a tough spot?"
I glanced at Director Huang's retreating figure before turning my gaze back to Captain Wu and said, "It's not impossible to solve."
Captain Wu was taken aback and looked at me in surprise, asking if I knew something.
I recalled what the child had told me earlier and nodded in affirmation.
Captain Wu was delighted and immediately pulled me aside, saying, "Little brother, did you see something on the seventh floor?"
I thought for a moment, then nodded and said, "It's possible that all the deaths in the hotel were caused by one man."
Captain Wu looked surprised and said, "Little brother, who told you that? We reviewed the surveillance footage, and it shows nothing at all."
I shook my head, dismissing Captain Wu's words. I explained that this case couldn't be viewed with normal reasoning; the surveillance footage was essentially useless.
Captain Wu nodded thoughtfully. I glanced back at the scene, which seemed to be wrapping up.
This case couldn't be rushed, so I left the scene with Captain Wu and found a place to eat. After a busy morning, I was already quite hungry.
When the food arrived, Captain Wu and I dug into our bowls eagerly.
At that moment, I heard a child's voice say, "Brother, look over there! That's the person!"
I quickly raised my head and looked to the left, where I saw a man dressed very seriously.
Sensing something was off about this man, I alerted Captain Wu. After giving some money to the boss, I discreetly followed the man.
